Hi everyone! Thanks Jean and Brian for giving OC our own place to hang out. I have been going to the OC chapter meetings for a couple of months now and have found them not only alot of fun, but very helpful in many other areas as well so I encourage you to get plugged in if you already haven't! As for introductions, my name is Marla Reid and I am a singer/songwriter/arranger/pianist/ and stay-at-home mom on the side. I just finished my first CD in Nov of 2001 and have been doing the whole "inide" thing. Unfortunately, I didn't know about JPFolks until my CD was already finished and CDbaby told me about this site. I sure could have used some help along the way when I was recording and writing and all those little details. But nevertheless, I am thankful for all the help I am getting now! If interested you can look at my website www.marlareid.com for a few sound clips and pics. Anyone else out there from OC? ------------------ "If it sounds good, it is good!"

Hi Marla, good idea on the "getting to know you stuff, and it was nice hearing a few of your songs at the May (or was it June?) meeting. But on to what you were asking for.... My name is Rick Paul, and I'm a full-time songwriter (and singer and demo producer and publisher and whatever else I need to do do support getting the songs out into the world). I've had a few independent cuts of my songs, some of which have gotten on some small radio stations in various parts of the world, but nothing yet with any major label artists. I also love performing, though I don't do it nearly enough, and, at this point, only as a solo singer/piano player when I do -- I'd love to get a band together at some point, though, if I found the right sort of kindred spirits. My songs tend to be somewhere in the country/adult contemporary/pop/rock vicinity -- probably would have just been called "rock" when I grew up, but not in today's highly segmented market. Oh, yeah, and I'm a married father of two (boy and girl), so that takes up a fair share of my time and energy, too. ------------------ ========================================== Rick Paul Closet Cowboy Music (ASCAP) Lake Forest, California E-mail: rickpaul@earthlink.netWeb: http://home.earthlink.net/~rickpaul MP3s: http://www.mp3.com/rickpaul ==========================================

Hi Rick, Of course I remember you from the May meeting. I missed you at the June one. I haven't heard the details about this months yet but I hope to be there. BTW, wasn't it you who mentioned the open mic at the Crazy Horse in Irvine? Do you go to those all the time? I was thinking of checking it out this month. The only problem is that it seems you have to sign up early to play and I don't think I can get there at noon. We'll see though. Marla

Hi Marla, yes it was probably me who mentioned the Crazy Horse Open Mic. I try to go every month, but missed the June one due to being in Alaska on vacation. I do plan to be there for the July 28th one, though. I wouldn't worry too much about timing on getting there, as they usually try and accommodate late signups. Also, if you know you'll be there for sure but will be late, you might send an e-mail to Steve Adams (SteveAdms1@aol.com) and/or Jim Hatch (cwfhat@pacbell.net) to let them know, and maybe they'll put you on the list ahead of time. BTW, sorry if it has taken me time to reply. I don't read message boards very often. If you ever want to get my attention quickly, you are safest e-mailing me directly -- unless you like to gamble anyway. ------------------ ========================================== Rick Paul Closet Cowboy Music (ASCAP) Lake Forest, California E-mail: rickpaul@earthlink.netWeb: http://home.earthlink.net/~rickpaul MP3s: http://www.mp3.com/rickpaul ==========================================

Hey, I'm from OC! I think we know each other, Marla. BTW, a belated happy birthday! I'm Bob Lee and I'm primarily a bass player but I also play a few other instruments and sing a little bit, too. My daytime gig is application engineering for QSC Audio ( www.qscaudio.com), and I've been involved in pro audio and broadcasting for 22+ years. I've written a lot of articles on audio for Mix, Live Sound, and other magazines. I started out in studio work but over the past 12 years or so have gotten much more heavily into live sound. I produced and ran sound for the November 1999 OC Just Plain Folks showcase at the Cafe Ruba in Costa Mesa. My most recent claim to fame is being Marla Reid's bass player. -Bob

Hey Bob! Sorry no gigs lately , but I just did an open mic yesterday at the Crazy Horse in Irvine. That was fun and there were a few people there from JPF. Hey, I haven't seen the cable show footage yet. I know there isn't too much with the band but perhaps there is a shot or two with you in it. I'll keep you posted. Marla

Hi, Bob! Interested in joining the OC Chapter? Send me an E with the subject: OC Chapter if you would like to join and I will put you on the E list. Our meetings are the third meeting of every month, usually at Joey Arreguin's studio.

Marla! I found JPF, and love it. Cool site. The Crazy Horse open mic was fun, it was good to get the feedback on my new material and hear gifted artists in our area. I begin sessions in August on Tin Rooster's new CD. Nibbles from Virgin, we will see.. Anyone know a good female banjo player that could do Alt Country, sing, spin plates and juggle?(kidding) I need a player. Nick Herbert San Clemente

Hi Nick! Remember that I warned you about this site being addictive! I am having to limit my time online so that I actually get other things done! This site has encouraged me to write more lyrics/music though so that is a really good thing. Sometimes I have a a hard time getting motivated to do that. So, Is there a reason you need a "female" banjo player? It isn't like I know a "male" banjo player either but I was just curious. Glad you found us, and maybe you can check out our chapter meetings in Anaheim on the 3rd Monday night of each month. We often share songs, eat food, and just have a good time getting to know other "crazy" artists out there. Take Care, Marla

I am from Orange County. I just registered on this site not too long ago so I don't know about everything it has to offer. I am a singer/songwriter/pianist and I dabble with the guitar but I would love to get better. I moved down here to find more musicians that I could learn from and work with but I haven't had the best of luck. Hopefully this site will make it easier.

August 10.02 Hi Marla: I'm pretty sure we met at several of the recent Orange County JPF meetings at Love 'n Laughter studio...Hope you're doing well.. For general info, I'm a Long Beach singer/songwriter (Orange County is way easier to access than the Valley...) who has performed at a number of So. Calif. coffeehouse and venues, solo and also most recently together with another performer, named Yvonne (also JPF member). Together we call ourselves "Trouble". I do lead vocals, she does harmony back-up, we both play guitar, and Yvonne also adds fiddle, percussion, and mandelin to some songs. We do both my original songs, as well as covers. Early this year I released a 14-song CD: "Calling Back the Sun", available at www.cdbaby.com/gayle. Pretty simple arrangements, my vocals, my friend Benebenek's guitar and a smattering of my guitar. Kinda nu-alternative-acoustic folk-rock. Or??? Hard to describe my style, sorta Joan Osbourne meets Tracey Chapman by way of Lucinda Willams and Natalie Merchant with influences of blues, folk, rock.. "Trouble" will be performing at several venues in Long Beach in September...details later.. Thanks! Gayle nakedsoulb@hotmail.com You can also hear me at www.mp3.com/gayle

Welcome Amanda! Sounds like we have alot in common. I am a singer/songwriter/pianist as well. I don't play guitar at all though. I'm much too lazy to learn another instrument. However, there have been many times I wish I knew how for convience purposes. Hope you can come to our local chapter meetings. They are held once a month in Anaheim. There is a post about them here in the OC forum. They are totally worth the time and it is fun to meet others with the same interests and talents. Hi Gayle, of course I remember you! Thanks for the note and I hope to see you next week! Marla

Hi Marla, I am listening to the first couple tunes on your site. Hammer is a nice discret tune. I like the contempry Country Pop Feel of it. I am hoping to be able to start making it to a few of the meetings now that I am no longer working for JavaMuisc. (for those who were unaware there is bad blood between Java and JPF and as such I was unable to participate while in their employ.) Anyways I would like to introduce you all to another Orange Count aritst who I think you will all enjoy and some of you may even know. Tyrone Wells Tyrone is a former Word Records recording artist who is now working as a solo singer songwriter and supporting a new Self titled CD release that is one of the best albums I have heard in recent months. For those who don't know me I hear a lot of new music every day with my day gig and this kid is among the best of the best. Hi Bobby, I was just reading your post on the general message board because I was intrigued with the fact you are looking for songs for the film and TV. But then I noticed that you needed songs for a show featuring Bikini clad women. Hmmmmm, Christian Contemporary music and Bikini Cald women? Well, it might work. LOL. Perhaps if I wear one too! That might help me sell a few more CD's (Or perhaps not!! I have a few years on Britney Spears!) Anyway, I hope you do make it to one of the JPF meetings though. There are some really incredibly talented artists there who may very well have some of the styles you are looking for. I am sure having local artists to work with would be helpful too. Take Care and hope to meet you soon. Marla Reid

Hi Marla, hey I have a lot of CCM in the data base. Don't fear submitting it because even if it won't work in the Bikini Beach show there are always other opportunities that arise. We are the sole source of music for Post Modern and they are getting more involved in production everyday. There will soon be a lot of Commercial Opportunities as well as more movie opps to as I continue to develop relationships within the Hollywood theatrical community. BTW I am just down the road from you in Brea. ------------------ Bobby Bensley CMAP Music International

Thanks Jean especially for the plug of my music. I am still unsure of how much I will be able to participate in the chapter as far as meetings and such go as I will be moving next month. Still in OC but will be moving to Sounth County, Laguna Nigal to be specific. It is going to be nice to get out of the heat and inland air that is Brea and be only four short miles from Dana Point Harbor. I love to go sit on the Harbor Pier which is lightly used and sit with my acoustic guitar and sing and play while I fish. ------------------ Bobby Bensley CMAP Music International

The meetings are held on the 3rd Monday of every month, Bobby. They are held in Anaheim not too far from La Palma Park and just up the road from Disneyland.
We have a lot of real talent in our chapter and I sure hope you can make some of the meetings so you can get to know some of them. Also, getting to know Joey Arreguin would be of great benefit I think to both of you.
Hope to see you soon.

Thanks Jean, I will do everything I can to make the meetings I know my schedule is insane from now through Oct. maybe after that I can make it up. In the next 60 days I have not only a move planned but also a short tour through Northern Colorao then a trip to Branson Mo. to meet my Father Don Deal for the first time in my life. We recently were able to find each other through the Internet and after 40 years of not knowing each other are looking forward to meeting. As it turns out he was a rather interagal part of the whole Bakersfield Sound period of Country music and has several Billboard hit songs to his credit. ------------------ Bobby Bensley CMAP Music International

Wow, Bobby! What an interesting story! To not only find your father after all these years, but to find out that music is something you both have in common.
By the way, nice job on the reviews you have given thus far. I like your style!

Thanks Jean, I was a little distracted while writting the reviews last night with all the shake rattle and roll that was going on.
Yea I always knew my Dad was a musician I never knew just how successful he had been though until I found him. He has had several Billboard top 40 hits over the years and has played with all the great names in Country from the 50 / 60's. In fact he spent years hanging out with the likes of Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, Wynn Stweart, Johnny Cash, Eddie and Johnny Cochran, Hank Snow etc. had I known him as I child I would have had the opportunitiy to be directly influenced by these men which is kind of a scarry thought.

Hi Marla, Well, my wife and I are both from the Orange County area, but we are now home owners living in Lake Elsinore, Riverside County. Whenever we get a chance to get involved with JPF folks on a "live" basis, you guys and the JPF Orange County Chapter would be it, since it's the closest one to our home! Lorie and I hope to attend one of the upcoming O/C chapter meetings, perhaps on a Monday night to enjoy the "song circle" actvities. It's always such a blessing to meet folks and get to hear some great music! My home recording studio just go upgraded again recently with the addition of "Cool Edit Pro 2.0"! It's such an awesome program for editing, mixing, special effects and mastering! With all the practice I'm getting, I'll be mixing and mastering just like the pros in no time! If you ever need to record a demo, just let us know so we can schedule you in. First session is FREE to all JPF members! Of course I'm always open to trades, like singing or piano for recording, etc.! Sincerely, Michael & Lorie Borges http://www.mp3.com/michael_borges ------------------ Not perfect but... PERFECTLY forgiven! [This message has been edited by Michael Borges (edited 09-15-2002).]
