276 Pontiacs Copy right 2004 P. Wentworth
Sweet black lady with your cute puffy do You don’t know how I used to like to watch you You have so much wisdom, so much joy impart Don’t matter what topic, you could be ever so smart
It don’t bother me you’re filthy rich and I’m not I don’t even mind the way you flaunt the stuff you got You started with nothing as you have let us all know At least a hundred different times or more, on your TV Show
Now I know you’re gonna say that I’m nothing but sore And I know you’re gonna say I’m biting at your back But the day I decided not to watch your show no more Was the day you gave away them 276 Pontiacs
Baby I Been watching you show off since day one Bought them books you recommended, Bought the clothes you had on But what were you thinking when you passed me by I got a piece of crap car that’s ready to die
Honey I ain’t watching your show, and that's a natural fact But you could bring me back if you shipped me a Cadillac Yeah If you could do that, well I’d be a fan for life All my neighbors be guessin how I got what I drive
So please Ms. W won’t you consider my plea Aint no skin off your nose, send a Caddy to me I’d be ever so grateful you just wait and see Come on girl give it up now, Send a Caddy to me

Hi Paul, Truth is it was actually Pontiac who footed the bill for all the cars. So the character in the song should still be disillusioned that she would be deceitful enough to pretend she paid for them. ------------------ Terry

Yeah TT, dead on. It has actually raised the bar for "product placement". GM was looking for a way to introduce this new model and they spent almost all their advertising budget on this stunt. Great publicity!

Just for everybodys information..
I have done 3 parties for Oprah...two Harpo Christmas parties and one small party at the condo.
Oprah quietly donates about 10 million dollars to Chicago charities each year...everything from womens shelters to educational programs. She donates to charities in the inner city and to charities in "white" areas.
She was kind and generous to me and the members of my band.
The fact that Pontiac donated those cars for the publicity means nothing to the 276 people that got them
Anyone that thinks that Oprah does stuff like that for the publicity is just wrong.
She worked hard and worked the American system and has realized the American dream. God bless her ! We should all be so dedicated to our goals.

HIDee Brother Paul!
Nice Try, Amigo....VERY Creative Angle, but, yeah, as Bob sorty points out, Oprah's VERY "Bulletproof" when it comes to Criticizin' The Kind Lady.
Maybe try again, with the Hook "277 Pontiacs" & Singer's Lament for a Better Car via a Laundry List of What's Wrong with His Current Set of Wheels. Have him Beggin' Mz O, rather than Attackin' Her..and this could be a good Comedic Number Yet---
Good Luck with The Effort! Big Guy-Hug, Stan

Mornin' Paul Cute idea for a song, the meter in verse 3 is reversed, may be try: I know you’re gonna say that I’m nothing but sore but today I threw my tv out the door gotta keep bringin' my lunch in a brown paper sack Cause I wasn't in your crowd gettin'276 Pontiacs With what Bob said, I've also heard wonderful things about Oprah...maybe just make your lyric a little more tongue and cheek ...JMO ------------------ Michelle www.michellerichardsmusic.com"Northern Girl With A Country Heart"

Paul:
I agree with Bob up to a point (see, Bob? It does happen)--but I do consider everybody and everything fair game. Potential pincushions, as it were, for my voodoo version of country music. On the *other* other hand, if the goal is to get one of those Pontiacs (or at least get Oprah's attention), one could potentially accomplish more by being, well, less critical (or less *obviously* critical).
Not to suggest a change in focus--it is, after all, Your Song, and I appreciate your airin' it, sharin' it, and inviting feedback in the first place--but what if one speculated (tongue planted firmly in cheek, of course) what one might have to *do* to get one of them Pontiacs, instead of just complaining that you didn't get one?

Great responses. Didn't know she contributes to the charities- certainly to her credit. I am having fun looking at reactions to the characters in the story. Some went to Madam O's defense, some wanted the singer to get up of their can and do something to get one. I guess everyone here got what I was tryin for. I still think that if she threw a few of her millions to the tireless organizations tying to address the genocide in Sudan maybe I wuold become one of her ardant fans. But maybe that's not fair. Also, why didn't Pontiac donate the cars directly? Thing is she gave them away and she didn't have to pay for them either, but I betcha most make the connection that she is generous none the less. Because she has currency with the people that's why and how many people think about that detail. Any way I've probably said too much about it. Theres just so much horrendus stuff happening in the world that this kind of sh-- just seems foolish and false. Guess I think too much. Sorry........Paul

You may be missing the hidden point here... No, Oprah didn't PAY for the Pontiacs, but do you honestly think Pontiac would have just given those cars away to 276 people just standing on the street? I don't think so. It was the "Oprah" show, the globally broadcasted Oprah show and the millions and millions who watch it that drew Pontiac to Oprah's studio that day. Imagine the publicity! Hell, I want one now! And Bob's right-Oprah epitomizes the American Dream, and she gives back almost perpetually. All you gotta do is take a look at her "Angel Network" to see that. If all you know about Oprah is her everchanging hair and waist, you really don't know Oprah. She's every woman, everyWHERE. She came from deep, dark poverty and was raped by her Uncle when she was a child. The only reason she's anywhere in life is PURE desire, drive and ambition. And a teacher who encouraged her to read. Did you know she sponsors many children whose parents have died of AIDS in Africa? Do you know she has single handedly opened schools in third world countries? Did you know recently she took an abused, neglected, abandoned child off the street and sent her to college, the college of the child's choice? I know, I sound like an Oprah Fanatic, but really, even though she makes money at what she does, her heart is bigger than her bank account will ever be. But, I also feel like Joe does, anything is fair game... Paul, we all have a charity we wish people like Oprah would support, but it's her money, I guess she gets to choose the charity. Tink

Ooo, if Oprah's gettin' canonized, she's *really* fair game. (Tongueness in cheekiness, of course.) As soon as you start mentioning saintliness and television in the same sentence, I think it's time to get out the rhymin' dictionary. (I can never find mine.)
Have at it (or her). Didn't the Bible say if thy lion's tail offend thee, cut it off? Or something like that?

Not to add fuel to what seems to be a flare up about Oprah, but the fact is that GM approached Oprah about doing something to generate publicity for the launch of new Pontic models which initially called for some freebies, but in the dialogue that ensued, it became this mass give away.
GM actually spent a huge percentage of the advertising budget for these new cars on this one gesture.
Everybody won here which is the optimal solution .....well except those who wanted to be in the audience and mourn the loss of a freebie, and of course those who, despite winning, are not satisfied with the colour of their new car. But that is the nature of the human beast.

To have it hopefully understood by all that Oprah's love and personal sacrifice are behind the give-a-way, reminds me of a Carly Simon song.
Carly Simon » In A Small Moment
In a small moment She accepted credit for something she did not do She said she'd done the water color in her bedroom But it was done by a friend from school Just a little lie No one would discover At least not very soon
In a small moment Just a little lie When she wasn't looking it just slipped on by

I can't believe she did that. It certainly generated huge publicity. Good current topic song. These kind have to get recorded and sung almost immediately. Short shelf life. Doesn't mean they shouldn't be written and sung, however.
Keep writing.

Joe: Actually I like GTI's and Volvos (Someday I might buy one with less than 100K on it). I think this example of mutual exploitation is so cozy-comfy -- Both backs were scratched and it felt good I reckon. Happens all the time. Should this be added to the list of all Ms. O's good works? or Pontiac's? Is Pontiace giving us a mixed message here? Is Mizz "O" giving us a mixed message here? Is Pontiac trying to claim a market niche by saying that they want to be the poor people's car company? I'm So confused. But I'm being over idealistic I reckon. Anyway it aint all that simple in my mind.
Have a good day how ever you spend it...Paul

Michelle THat's a cute line you wrote. I hav thought about throwing out the TV many times. But right now I gottta watch it until this election thing plays itself out. BTW, I listened to the mp3, forgive me for being so tardy at trying to get you a melody for it. Been writing some sorta clasical instrumentals aka John Renbourn, but will retuen to my "Country roots' and back to your song.
Hugs to you and Alan...Paul

Hi Terry: Yeah Carly's song nailed it. Heard the news couple of times on the give away. Didn't say nothing about Pontiac giving away the cars, just said Oprah did it. Just a little lie. Bet she didn't try real hard to set things straight. I Need to get off this subject.
Take care tall one....Paul
