“Plastic Chains and Easy Money” / “Workin’ For The Master”

(C) 2004 by W.L. “Bill” Cooper

first draft

V-1
He'll have to pay the plumber
to fix the kitchen sink.
Needs a brand new fridgerator
and the T. vs. on the blink.

The kids are gettin’ cranky
wife’s patience warin' thin
Guess he’d better call the Master
and up the stakes agin.

(Chorus)
Plastic Chains and Easy Money
keeps the whole world spinnin’ ‘round
Plastic Chains and Easy Money
will take a good man down.

V-2
Works a day job for the master
and a night job pays the rent.
By the time he stops for grocery's
he’s already over spent.

Tryin’ to keep up with the Jones’s
makin’ half the Jones’s pay.
So he’ll charge it to the master
and he’ll keep up anyway.

(Chorus)2
Plastic Chains and Easy Money
keeps the whole world spinnin’ ‘round
Plastic Chains and Easy Money
will take a good man down.
He’ll be Workin’ For The Master
eight hours every day.
and Workin’ For The Master
ain’t as easy as they say.

bridge
When the road ends at disaster
and the time comes to repent.
There's no mercy from the master
on his twenty two percent.

(Chorus)2
Plastic Chains and Easy Money
has the whole world spinnin’ ‘round
Plastic Chains and Easy Money
will take a good man down.
He’ll be Workin’ For The Master
eight hours every day.
and Workin’ For The Master
ain’t as easy as they say.

(Tag)
Plastic Chains and Easy Money
rules the good old U.S.A.
Plastic Chains and Easy Money
ain’t as easy as they say.

Well done but I have no clue what plastic chains means. Well, credit card, yes, but I don't get the "chains." I guess you mean it's like it wraps him in chains. Good luck!

Hi Bill

cool piece, sad but true, and it's a world wide dilemma

miss one lousy stinking payment
and six percent becomes twenty five
balance transfer ain't the answer
working working working for the master

what a disaster, working for the master.
only way out is the ever after
the sound of shackles and chains
have replaced what once was laughter

working working working for the master

Hi DukeWill,

Thanks for the read and feedback [Linked Image]

A few may not but I expect that most workin' class folks will relate to plastic chains just fine.

Was lookin' for something that sings and "Plastic Chains and Easy Money" should do the trick.

Regards
Bill

Hey Bill,

Nice write. Lotta folks can relate to that. I don't know if it was intentional, but you probably want to keep Master with a cap all the way through.

I get it. cool thought (platic chains meaning we're chained to credit card debt.)

I endeavor to change one heart and one mind, one word at a time.

Hi Bill,

I hear ya talkin'!! Working on cuttin' those plastic chains, myself.

This is a good one. I don't think you should capitalize "master" because I thought you were talking about God at first.

V-2 says it all!

I was hearing "silver chains and golden needles" when I read the chorus. Hope I didn't plant a melody you can't change!

Yep. Been there done that. Still trying to get the sucker down. Lessons learned, I guess. Nice write.

Guilty as "charged", Bill! Some of your spelling had me puzzled for a moment ... I thought TV's was T vs. (versus). Also, do you mean bringing home the "bacon" ... unless "beacon" has a hidden meaning and I'm missing it. I'm assuming in the tag you mean "dyin" as in dead ... no "e" in it. Other than those minor things, this is a really good (but sad) commentary on the credit card frenzy in the US. Nicely done.

Hi Bill,

Thanks for the read and feedback [Linked Image]

Thought I’d use caps in the lines where Master was used as a second “Title”

Not sure if I should use caps all the way through. or not?

Don’t mater that much here [Linked Image]

Not God but they do enjoy the power they hold over us poor workin’ folfs [Linked Image].

I was hearing "silver chains and golden needles"

I can relate just fine and I think this is a fine write.....I really like the idea and how you're using the chains metaphor to put it across.....

Good work man!

G'Mornin' Brother Bill...here are some suggested Line Changes, K-O-S:

"Guess he better SHUFFLE OUT his Master"

"SELF-WROUGHT Chains OF Easy Money"

"So he'll charge it to THAT Master"
(Recommend "THAT PLASTIC Master" & no confusion with The Deity'd be occurin' throughout.)

"GOTTA GET his 22 Percent" {Alt: "ABSOLUTION'S 22 Percent"}

"AT LEAST 8 Hours every day"

Guess I'm all Suggested-Out now..."KUDOS" for a Hard-Hittin' True Song, Amigo. Been There, still Do Somea That on Occasion. Real easy to OVER Do..but ya gotta learn how to Pace It...heh-heh!

Congrats on this'n & Good Luck with it!
Big Guy-Hug,
Stan

Bill: Oh the (in?)conveniences of modern life So cool. Very good read. I got a chuckle from "workin for the Master". Lots of good word play in this. Good job.

Cheers.....Paul

Bill, looks like you took charge of this one right from the start and I just can't give you enough credit for what you've accomplished here. I like it and best of luck with it!

This is a cool hook, Bill. Looks like all it needs is "noise"! [Linked Image]

"Grits is one of those country-boy words that is both singular and plural-like deer, elk and sheep. I think the singular is appropriate when there's a modifier that makes it clear one is talking about something specific. Like, 'Grits are good for you, but these here grits is tasty.'"~~Joe Wrabek

Hey Bill,

Nicely done, on a subject I've gotten on the soapbox about more than a few times. I'm happy to say the wife and I don't have a credit card to our name, but I do think the consumer debt problem in this country is very serious. Thanks for taking a lyrical stab at the subject. I enjoyed it a lot.
