Here's one I dusted off for you fine folks to read. I wrote this with Erik Thorson.

The Real Star of Bethlehem
(c) 1987 Erik Thorson and Mike Dunbar

I heard the wise men followed a brilliant star that night,
But when they came to Bethlehem they found a brighter light,
Right there in the stable they fell to their knees in awe,
For the Real Star of Bethlehem lay cradled in the straw.

Chorus
The Real Star of Bethlehem came to that lowly place,
A baby in a manger sent to fill the world with grace,
Shepherds in their fields heard the angels' call,
When the real star of Bethlehem came down to save us all.

Now each year in December, the world puts on a show,
I see pretty decorations everywhere I go,
Santa's on the corner, lights are on the tree,
But the message of the manger is what Christmas means to me.

Chorus

God bless y'all and Merry Christmas
Mike

Merry Christmas Mike,

This is a lovely reminder of the real meaning of this blessed season. Love the lyric.

Aaawwww Mike, this is just wonderful!! Simply, yet elegantly stated. And I couldn't agree more. Thank you for sharing this.

On a sidenote, I saw a news special yesterday about Bethlehem and it's really sad... because of the war with the Palestinians, the streets of Bethlehem remained vacant. One hotel owner said it was the quietest, emptiest Christmas in Bethelehem since the birth of Christ.

Happy Holidays!

Hi, Mike!

One of the reason I am a Christmas humbuger is because so many set aside the real meaning of Christmas. I really appreciate the meaning of the song. It's well done too.

Jean, I have to agree....but then I have to stop and think that the powers that were have "two" holidays entertwined with one another......the decorated trees of Lebanon were a practice and celebration long before the "birth of our Saviour". I haven't found any place that says why the two were combined....one is a pagan holiday and the other a christian one....maybe somebody else has read how and when they got intermingled.????
I did appreciate the correctness of the lyric, though....

I recall reading a long time ago that the holidays were intermingled because the early Christians wanted to celebrate the birth of Christ without calling unwanted attention to themselves, so they decided to do it in conjunction with the pagan holiday.

Thanks a lot, folks. Christian country artist Susie Luchsinger (she's Reba McEntire's sister) put this on a Christmas album a few years ago. It's available on her website.

Have a happy new year everyone!

Just Plain Quotes
"A lot of people will tell you that preparation is what will make you successful. But I think that people misunderstand exactly what that means sometimes. The type of preparation you need most is the kind that allows you to instantly seize an opportunity, change your course based on a momentary circumstance, and grab hold of the totally unexpected when it happens, and allow it to take you for the ride of your life! That is the kind of preparation that can lead to the most enjoyable type of success." -Brian Austin Whitney
