Okay, Okay, I'm trying to join the modern world. This is my first attempt at recording onto my computer. (can already see how to do it better next time) But for now, this is it.
So........ how'd we do? Anymore tweaking needed?

A Lover's Prayer
© 2002 Erica Groshens/Harriet Ames

When I listen to you breathing
In the quiet of the night
When you wrap yourself around me
After we're both satisfied
I love you more completely
Than I ever thought I'd dare
Everything we do together
Becomes...a Lover's Prayer

Between the beating of our hearts
Is a wish that we will know
How to help each other live
How to help each other grow
To know behind each gentle kiss
Every touch we have to share
Our souls will join together
And whisper this...a Lover's Prayer

(that) Love will never hide behind
Righteousness or pride
Love can last forever
Through every tear and sigh
Let us love without trying
And set ourselves aside
Love without condition
Trust it to be our guide

Every day I watch the sun
Chase away the night
All our cares just melt away
When I see us in it's light
It fills me up with all the love
One heart could ever bear
There's no doubt that together
We can live...this Lover's Prayer

Love will never hide behind
Righteousness or pride
Love can last forever
Through every tear and sigh
Let us love without trying
And set ourselves aside
Love without conditions
Trust it to be our guide

So listen, love, and share
With me, this Lover's Prayer

Good for you Harriet. Ya done good.
Guitar is real nice. Vox Is clear. Maybe wnts just a tweek up i the opening but just a tweek. Could hear it as is.
maybe also see where your bass and trebble setting on the puter are sat and if they are treble up and bass down I would teek them the opposite way a little and see how it sounds also.
Like it ladies.

Thanks Pam,
Yeah, it's all new to me. Challenging, but fun. Lots to learn yet, but some great teachers on this board [Linked Image]

Thanks Graham,
yessir.... that opening is off. As usual I sent Erica a tape in the mail, while I was learning how to do this. And sent her the first take that worked. Decided to go ahead and post that until I have time to at fix (or at least improve) it.
Looked at my current set-up specs, and don't have control over treble and base settings. Still very, very basic here. But it's a start.and I have options on how to upgrade.

This is a lovely marriage of melody and words, Harriet. Even in "working" form, it’s pretty as can be. I can only imagine how good it’s going to sound after you’ve done it a couple dozen more times. And get that recording studio of yours nicely modernized. [Linked Image]

But I do agree with Graham about the start. I’d like to hear you come in much stronger, more confidently at the beginning of that first line. But it looks like you figured that out, too. Something kept nagging at me as I listened over and over, though. I kept wanting to hear it just a little more upbeat, stronger, with more joy, and celebration in your delivery. The melody is right, it’s perfect, the words just elicit in me a different emotion, a more confident, stronger, conquering feeling. Specifially, in many spots you trail off the vocals (dare, prayer, guide, and the tag), when I was expecting them to be held longer, and go UP, to give them more strength. Does that make sense?

I really think you nailed the phrasing of the bridge – the second time around. Absolutely nailed it. If you can sing that the same way both times, wow. Couple more minor things. Phrasing “every touch we have to share”, the word “have” screamed out to me to be emphasized, with a hint of urgency behind it. And in the final verse, what do you think about dropping “that” from “there’s no doubt that together” and substitute it with a long, expectant pause? I think that would transition nicely into the bridge.

Beautiful work, you two! Now, what I want to know is – is that a rocking chair accompanying you, Harriet? [Linked Image]

Let's know what soundcsard you have Harriet, and if you are using an add on recording program. Larry Williams runs the recording forum in JPF and it is a helpful place to ask and to learn just by reading.
Regards.

Dear Teacher <smile>, Truly beautiful.... I hate to take the easy way out here, but I have to do a big DITTO to Michael's post..... this is so poignant, so moving, and it should be somewhat more celabratory perhaps; I liked Michael's word "confident"... the words deserve that. Very nice job, Harriet....

Hi, everyone. First of all, I'd like to thank Harriet for doing the music for this lyric. I think she came up with a beautiful melody. Secondly, thanks to everyone who has commented so far.

Pam: Thanks for listening. I'm so proud of Harriet for jumping into the technological world! [Linked Image]

Graham: Thanks for the production help and for liking it!

Mike: Wow! Lots of great help, as usual. I'm sure Harriet and I will be taking some of your suggestions. I am so glad you liked this one.

Teri: "Truly beautiful" - thank you so much! And yes, Mike had some good thoughts. Harriet and I will be talking about them, soon. I appreciate your comments!

Thanks Mike,
Well hmmmm, I know the opening on any other take will at least be better than this one with the "okay, it's started...ooops, better try again" beginning, [Linked Image]
It was late, I was running out of time and stocking up on frustrations (excuses, excuses [Linked Image]
Trailing off vocals would certainly be part of the improvements.
More joyful? Will have to listen to how I sound on different takes. (might be just my limitaions considering the range of notes, might not)
More confidence in the singing will come with time (and or a pro demo singer) I'll see where I get before that next step (if we go there)
I could see pulling out that "THAT" would actually make it easier for me to sing.
Hopefully I can do a better version of this in the next day or two.
Oh......and the rocking chair? nah, that's just my squeaky computer chair. The first thing I noticed AFTER I uploaded the file. (how come this never happens before?) top of the list of things I know I can improve on [Linked Image]

Thanks Graham,
took a peak over to the recording forum. As I suspected, it's mostly way over my head [Linked Image] But I saw a few links that got me a little farther.
(don't you just hate it when even a beginner's forum looks to advanced?)
You're the second one to ask about my soundcard. Ummmmmm, I have one..... (yeah right dummy...we knew that!!) has only 1 in line. can either direct it to use the microphone that came with computer (oh boy) or direct input. No multiples at this point. And only basic "level 1" Music Match. Haven't upgraded yet (not sure what the upgrade would improve yet) Still lots of reading to do

Thanks Teri,
Well gee..... student..... I think I may have to ask you to become my teacher. Turnabouts only fair. [Linked Image]
Confidence? Gee, we were thinking more impatience.
Some of the tone of the music is probably due to my guitar playing. Carpal Tunnel Symdrome took over where my lack of ambition left off. And I will probably never be able to convey as much with the guitar as I want to. (thought my keyboard version came closer)
I hear a latin-esque feel to this. Erica said Flamenco. I can see a sensual dance going in the background.
To me it IS very up-beat. But extra instruments would help bring that out for sure. I'll see what I can do. (and Erica and I can discuss it)

Harriet. Yoiur sound card should be in your program pop up list. One of. Sound Blaster, Creative, Greenwave, Whatever. That wil give you the name and type. Plus will have a manual in help I would think.
If can't find it there, you should be able to click Start/setings/control/multimedia/sound devices.
In there it should have the name of your card.
Music Match level 1 as you call it is fine. I have upgraded and it does have a feel advantages. Speed being the main one but the basic free one works fine. Upgrade is pretty cheap, and they send you lifetime upgrades to boot.
You'll get there.
Never seen a soundcard with only an in and an out. never seen one with less than three minijack slots. Live and learn.
My first one had four as it had both a speaker jack and a line out which was great as I am now forever swapping jacks twix speaker and headphones depending on if i am allowed to make a noise or not.
Regards.

Hi Harriet,
Going into technology,is very, difficult, and scary, when one knows practical, nothing about it.I admire you for being brave enough,to jump in,so to speak. You did exceptionaly well for your 1st time.Rick and I's 1st,one,was very low,we had to remove it.We are improving, slow but sure, with the help of friends. It does take time and patience....Your voice is great,it's just the sound was a little low,It's to be expected,on your 1st try. There is nothing wrong, with your, playing. As far as your voice not being as forceful, that is also understandable, you were tired, and I'm sure a little nervous.I have a feeling, you were concentrating more on the outcome, this is all normal.Everyone knows what a good entertainer you are.if they don't they only need to listen to your other 3 songs on your
web site(beautiful)Also,you are NO3 on
Sound Click Acoustic Guitar Charts....
I really think, after you take out the tiny quirks in your new song,it will be absolutely,beautiful......
CONGRATULATTIIIiON,you've done good girl

God bless

Thanks Claire,
for the vote on the song and the vote of confidence.
Actually, truth told, I was probably concentrating LESS.(thinking about way too many other things) This was my third take (first one done while still on line...and AOL rang it's warning bell about asking if I wanted to stay online just as I hit the tag..grrrrr, second one was fine, but in my efforts to send it out to Erica, I sent it to "a new file " and it dissappeared. [Linked Image]
So by the time I did this take I merely wanted it done with a bare minimum of mistakes so that she could hear it. Hadn't really intended to post this version, was kind of a last minute decision, knowing my schedule for the weekend would not allow me to do a better version. (and it would still be worktape quality)

Graham, I stand corrected.
I do have 3 minijack slots. one being dedicated to the speakers. (so didn't count that) Then there are two more jacks labeled 1)in... & 2) mic. But the controls I found, only allowed me to be recording through one line at a time. If I click on one the checkmark on the other setting dissappears.
I'll keep reading, will probably upgrade, among other things.

Hi Mz Harriet,

I think you did a lovely job with Erica's lyrics. The music seems to fit well to me. Michael had some good suggestions for minor tweaks, but overall, for a first time recording I think you can be pretty proud of this one, lady!

Don't stand on ceromony Harriet. Sit and be corrected is fine with me.
Ok. I am sure you will find one slide that says in the volume and recorder controls. Always remember windows volume control opens by default in playback mode and you need to click file/preferances in it the click recorder and make sure you have all the squares ticked and operative..
It doesn't mattre which mixer you use to set the slides up. What you do on one will also happen on the other.
You can have mixed input recording operating and still mute individual slides.
Foe example. if you have your backing track in the CD player and using your line in coming from an outside source you have your guitar running through, you can mute the puter mike so you don't get any hum and room noises, like the telephone or doorbell ringing while recording.
By the way and just in casre you need to know one day.
beside those three jacks you also have a port similar to the one your modem and printer is on. This is what is called a game port, and you can get a cheap adapter lead from radio shack or similar and run your midi keyboard through the puter.
Id have mine going into the karaoke machine along with the mike and that going into line in. By adjusting volume balance twix keyboard and mike, I can do one take recordings good enough for first take demos. Which inmy case are often last take demos.
By what you tell me your jacks say it sounds like you have a Soundblaster live soundcard. They are a good one.
Back to the reading Harriet. Well hopefully a little less of it now.
Now ya can stand up and curtsey sweetly if you want.
Regards.
Graham

Thanks Bobbie,
Yeah, for a first try, I guess I did pretty well. (specially considering the second has taken some re-education......some things went right merely by chance the first time [Linked Image]
Hopefully can replace with the newer (slightly) improved version tonight. Still not the sound quality I want, but then I always think something is missing when it's just my voice and guitar.

Ceremony Graham? ME???? follow protocol??? [Linked Image]
So that's how I get my keyboard connected? cool. will have to play with that. (after I get the adaptor)
Wow! lots more options to play with. Gee if I could ditch the guitar, I might actually be happy with my home recordings.

Hey there Harriet!! Congrats on figuring out how to get yourself recorded and heard on the internet! Yay for you!

Gotta tell you, you really outdid yourself with the melody and execution, Harriet. I emailed Erica this morning and told her I thought this was the best song you've done that I've heard so far. Congrats again!

And Erica, this is a very beautiful lyric... your inspiration was working overtime and it came out beautifully.

I'll leave the technical stuff to the experts, I'll just say I really enjoyed this!!

Good work to all those involved!!

Thanks Tink,
My best???? wow. As I keep telling her, Erica's lyrics take my music places I would have never gone with my words. (something about the structure or subject matter or all that and more)
Just put up a "cleaner" version on the site. This song is just not made for my guitar vertuosity [Linked Image] but at least I took out a few bumps.
Yeah she did write some pretty darn beautiful words.

G'day Harriet Ames. It seems that every song you write is bonzer. My mother, bless her, always said to'Give credit where credit is due' and there is no one who deserves more credit than you for writing such a beautiful song as this one. I love your song, I truly do.best wishes, Ray in Australia.

Just in case your are interested Harriet, or anybody else. There is a parallel thing going on in SongRamp Forums. Artsist section I think . Is a question by Chippy and is very similar to this subject. Just may be something to help come up in there if ya check it out now and then.
Will go get the cleaner version too.
Editing here. Geting the new one. I think. See it is the same title as the first so added a 2 to the save as name so I know which is which comew listen time.

THanks Ray,
Always nice to hear from you.
To tell the truth, sometimes I write my music first and fit words to it, sometimes the two come together, and sometimes (usually when I'm co-writing) my music is inspired by the words. So to follow you mother's advice, I have to give credit to Erica's beautiful words. They paint themselves. I just held on (and took notes [Linked Image]

Thanks Graham,
I'll check out that thread. I've never been able to listen to anything at songramp, but was told recently that might be because I haven't registered. So will give it a try.
