Blue Ridge Jamboree © 2002, dawg, BMI
Thick, smoky clouds hangin' over the mountains; steam risin' off of the coal. For days that haze relentlessly stays; dark as a mine owner's soul.
Ridin' to the bottom In an eight-man can, to dig in the devil's backyard. Sixty tons of slag for a little brass tag; short pay for work that's so hard.
Full moon bright on a late June night come Saturday, we're gonna play. Dulcimer, dobro, guitar, banjo, two fiddles and a doghouse bass.
(Chorus) Coal mines and moonshine, Blue Ridge Jamboree. Kick-ass blue grass, mountain harmony. Dance some, romance some, have a little fun. One day 'til Monday and another long mine run.
Go to work before the sun comes up. Leave after it goes down. We don't pay no mind to Daylight Savings Time; 'cause it don't sure don't shine underground.
(Chorus) Coal mines and moonshine, Blue Ridge Jamboree. Kick-ass blue grass, mountain harmony. Dance some, romance some, have a little fun. One day 'til Monday and another long mine run.
Bible says the meek will inherit the earth, but the foreman here disagrees. Before probate we gotta excavate all the coal in east Tennessee.
(Chorus) Coal mines and moonshine, Blue Ridge Jamboree. Kick-ass blue grass, mountain harmony. Dance some, romance some, have a little fun. One day 'til Monday and another long mine run.
just one day 'til Monday....and another long mine run.

Hey Dawg!
Enjoyed this one quite a bit. Your second stanza feels a little awkward:
In an eight-man can, ridin' to the bottom; to dig in the devil's backyard.
...reads and feels like a fragment. It has to be there I think, but don't quite sit right in the flow of things. But I'm bein' really picky there...
Overall, the imagery is great and puts you right there in the thick of things.

Thank ya hobes,
I do believe I had the first two lines of that stanza reversed. Hopefully it works better now.
Thanks for the read and the kind words. I always look forward to your visits.

Dawg,
I like the concrete details that paint this scene. Good work. The contrast between the hard work and the time for relaxation and blowing off steam is well done. Favorite phrase "dark as a mine owner's soul".
Keep writing.

Evenin' Skip,
and thank you. This one, like most bluegrass songs, was a lot of fun to write. As such, it left me with a lot of favorite lines.
I have been keeping up with you "Book of Ruth, the musical", despite what I said. I am waiting for you to finish. Gotta tell you, I am really impressed so far. Somewhere in it, you need to mention Damascus Steel.

Good job on this. The first two stanzas are very strong. I don't think the remaining ones are up to the same level, but the overall effect is still a winner. This sort of reminds me of one of my favorite old Irish tunes...."Coaltown Road", though I'm guessing this one's a lot more lively. Excellent work.

Thank you Randy,
for taking the time to read and respond.
You are right, I do see this as a pretty lively one. I'm thinking maybe a David Peterson and 1946 Band kind of melody.

After hearing about 1946 for a while, I finally caught them at the Station Inn a while back. I agree, this one should sound good done something along those lines. Good luck with it.

Yeah, Gibson is keeping them on tour right steady now. Talented group for sure.

Hey Dawg, I really like this one. Growin up in a bluegrass family really makes me appreciate songs like this one. I especially like the hoedown on the weekends. Great Job! Peace, Sherin

Thanks Sherin,
I sure do appreciate you taking the time to read and comment. I have to write a bluegrass number every six months or so just to keep the hand in.
Glad you liked it.
