Howdy folks! We are thrilled to say that PINEYFEST has a new home at the Dickson Holiday Inn. The Holiday Inn in Dickson has indicated they will be more than happy to host not one but TWO nights of fun and frivolity and will open the expanded lounge for us, both June 12th (Wednesday) and June 13th (Thursday). Dawg and I met with them the other night and they said that they will open the lounge for music earlier than normal, 7 pm instead of 9...and that they can legally stay open till 3 am! That SHOULD take care of most of even the rowdier members of our bunch!! It will also give folks a chance to perform more songs since there may be so many wanting to get up and 'do their thing' that having the festivities on only one evening would have limited folks to just 2-3 songs each. Johnny Petty, who is the host of Songwriter Night and Open Mic nights, has also agreed to do the hosting duties for us. We will be there both evenings...so if folks can only come one of the two nights...you aren't going to miss us!! You are all still welcome to drop by the house on Thursday for sort of an open house...and take a sit on the porch swing. Dawg will have the coffee on (if it isn't too hot..<G> ) and who knows what else might be lurking in the pantry. LOL We would suggest that you have your guitars tuned and come in early to do sound checks, etc. There will be two mics set up and amps. If you need anything extra...you need to bring that yourself. We are thrilled that folks are still coming despite the change in venue. We still have some publishers, producers and studio folks coming too...so it will be a great time to meet, greet and connect with some pros. We can't wait to meet everyone. THE DICKSON HOLIDAY INN AIN'T NEVER GONNA BE THE SAME AGAIN!! Hope that damn Panty Vigilante isn't in this hotel like he was in Detroit last year!! Will there be some sort of equipment that plays cd's at the open mic? Ria and I want to do a number and I have a solo thing planned also, but my music is supplied by cd since I don't play anything and my music composer won't be there? Thanks for your tireless work getting this thing hooked up! You've no idea how much I'm looking forward to it!! And like Blake said, NO designated drivers needed for several of us. AND we can have an after hours party in one of our rooms if the late nighters want to hang out for a while longer. Of course I'll have to turn in early so I can make it to early morning prayer service, but I can sleep through the noise. Looking forward to taking a swing, too. And I hope Dawg's gonna whip up some of those sticky buns, too. Thanks a ton, Bernards!! Tink

Yeah, Blake..that was one of the major considerations with this decision! LOL Some of these twisty roads around here are a menace even sober! We didn't want to invite our friends here just to lose a few.

That's great news, G 'n D. In an effort to save a buck, I'm staying at the Econo Lodge a few miles north of the Holiday Inn, so if anyone a few beers behind me would be kind enough to drive me back there, I'd appreciate it. I won't be there Wednesday, but I'll probably be closing the place down on Thursday. I always stay up 'til 5 or 6 am every night/morning. So thanks again, guys. The countdown is on!!! Anthony

We are so glad you and your wife will be part of the party! Don't think it will matter one bit where you are staying as long as you participate in the good times!!

Howdy Anthony, Well, I suspect there will be a few of us non-inbibers who MIGHT be willing to offer shuttle service. However..I have it on good authority that you get feisty (feistier??) when you drink. LOL So you may end up walking...LOL though it really isn't very far. Think the EconoLodge is right across the interstate. Heck, I KNOW I will be drivin the Dawg home. We ARE gonna have a GOOD time!! Bobbie

Hey guys!
This is for Tink and Stan...and anyone else with pre-recorded tracks. I just got off the phone with Arvel Bird, owner of Brush Hill Studios. He will be there both Wed & Thurs nights and is bringing along his karaoke machine which will hold/play the cds you bring with your backing tracks. So we are all set in that regard. Plus if anyone has the sheet music with Nashville chord charting, he will be happy to back anyone on the fiddle. Hang on to yer hats folks! This is gonna be one wild JAM!!

An aside to Bob Young: Yeah, go ahead and kidnap me! I just got back from www.tootsies.net, and yeah, Tootsie's looks like an awesome place. A little touristy, yeah, but a lot of historic import to back it up. Can't wait to see it! And BTW, you'll be there on Wednesday too?!? Boy, don't people on this board ever work??? (*Do* you work? I have no idea.) See ya in 13 days, not 12, Anthony

I'm down and blue and damn depressed That I can't hobnob with the best! But though my body won't be there My spirit will be everywhere. So find the spot where I should be And raise a glass to honor me.
Wonder if I might make a personal request. With the recording equipment that will be available, would it be possible for someone to "capture" the musical moments and send me a cassette? For me, that would be ALMOST like being there, and certainly the next best thing.
In fact, if cassettes or CDs could be made of the performances, that might be another way of offsetting some of Bobbie and Dawg's expenses. I'd certainly pay for a couple copies, as well as shipping and handling. Whatcha think?

Hi, Bob. That's the *edited* version?! Yow. I dunno, Bob.... there are noble professions and there are ignoble professions. Now, being a rock musician is *FAR* from an ignoble profession, don't get me wrong, but any job in the entertainment field engenders less admiration from me than being, say, a teacher, nurse or even a corporate drone. Hell, I admire hard laborers for sweating 50 hours a week. I could never do that. The bottom line is, if you wanted a different job, you would have one. After all, you're an intelligent man. You do work, yes, but you could do a helluva lot worse (or a helluva lot more, depending on one's perspective) than what you're doing. Sorry to play the snot-nosed brat here, but that's my honest opinion. You make an intriguing point about Tom Waits, though. Anthony (who makes only a little more than $30K/yr )

Anthony..
Just let me say that the last thing I give a damn about is your "admiration" I've seen the names of some of those you admire...I'm content to be a non-member of that club !
Besides ,I get plenty of that already..thanks !
Bob
and, by the way..it was hard "work" that earned it !
I'm gonna be at Tootsies meeting up with some musicians who are in town rehearsing for a big Rockabilly tour this summer.. I'd love it if you walked up to one of them (most of whom have been at this longer than I have) and tell them how they haven't really been "working" for the last 40 or 50 years. For that matter..tell anyone, in any profession that they've given their lives to that they really don't "work" hard.
Yeah...that'd be fun to see....

Hi Bobbie and dawg..... Just in case there are any changes after I'm "out of pocket"....leave a message on my room at the Holiday Inn Dickson. I will be arriving Wednesday 6/12. My house will be shut down (locked up for remediation) sometime after Wednesday this coming week....which means no email access. I'm leaving OH Saturday, 6/8 to head for Louisville and a couple of strong, welcoming arms. After a few days there, I (hopefully WE) will head for Dickson. However, we do not know yet if we can swing the WE. That is up to Uncle Sam. BTW....Karaoke machine? What? We're expected to sing? I DON'T think you want to hear me do that! (LOL) I'll try to bring a CD anyway....just in case you want to play music with words (and....a way for Charlie to be there in spirit). *I'll* say we're different, Bob! I'll be the first to admit, I could never do what you do on stage, nor do I even seem to have the dexterity to be a musician to begin with. I'm impressed that you're a musician, period, and *highly* impressed that you can make a good living at it. That being said, I'll stand behind my earlier comments, even though I had a six-pack in my belly when I made 'em. I guess all I'm saying is that, yes, there's a ton more to your job (hell, your life's work!) than people itching to quit their day jobs realize, but I think those people would still gladly trade their jobs for yours. (Not me, though. I watch TV for a living. Really! ) I'm really looking forward to seeing ya on the 13th. I guess we'd better stay off this subject, though. And politics, too. Anthony

YAY!!!!!!!!!!!! Party is at my house...and I ain`t gotta clean up the mess afterwards!!!!!!! Great work Bobbie and Dawg! Y`all are so "top shelf"! I`m saving up to remit the pre-bail money too! Dano. -------------------------------------------- Now to Bob and Anth... I agree with you 100% Bob. I am a machinist. I operate a CNC (Computer Numerically Controlled) Vertical Turning Center in a manufacturing plant. I`ll never get rich, but it pays the bills. I work 40 hours a week during slow weeks(alot of them lately)or up to 60 hours during a busy week. Is it my dream job? LOL...umm...hell no! To me, if a person earns a living, under the law, it`s an HONEST LIVING. Noble or ignoble isn`t a factor. Doesn`t matter if you`re a bus driver, a short order cook, a welder, a professional athelete, a pig farmer, a waitress, a machinist, a singer/musician, or a corporate executive. (Notice I said honest and under the law which leaves out criminals and lawyers. ) I respect your profession. I`ve always said that if you can do what you want to do, and make the kind of money you want doing it, you have the world by the a$$. (I haven`t found someone to pay me for being a Doctor of Sarcasm yet, or I`d be there too!) Rock on Bob, my hat is off to you and your job. P.S.-Anthony...if you aren`t a criminal or a lawyer, you`re okay too. You obviously aren`t working at your dream job either though, so no hats off just yet. Just some reflections from the windowpane/(pain?) Dano. ------------------ www.angelfire.com/music3/danolyrics [This message has been edited by Dan windowman (edited 06-01-2002).]

Bob *does* have the world by the a$$. That's why his seemingly complaining about it struck a bad chord (so to speak ) in me. As for myself, I may not have my dream job, but it's better than any other I could have, especially with my limited marketable skills. Anyway, enough of all that. Anthony

Anth,
I think the point is, "I lack the manual dexterity to play an instrument" is a cop-out. Anybody can play AN instrument...there are tons of them to choose from. Many, many people play several; and play several well enough to play them on stage.
What is lacking is the dedication and hours of practice, the bloody finger tips, wearing latex gloves to shampoo and condition your hair so that your calluses don't fall off from the conditioner, the sacrifices, both personal and professional that a musician, and many times his or her loved ones make on behalf of the art.
Then, after the years of practice, after the years of fronting small bands in smoky beer joints, opening for regional acts, they will finally get one shining moment in the spotlight.....and what do they hear from the audience, appreciation for their hard work and dedication....no, they hear things like: a God given talent, he has a "knack" for music, she sure was "blessed" with that voice.
Anth, when I see a remarkably talented and skillful songwriter/performer working a "dayjob" in a Nashville "songmill" for forty dollars a demo (includes writing the music, recording the demo, singing the song...and the man knows he has to average better than two a day to feed his family) then he still plays out at writer's nights once a week and at a coffee house on Saturday. That is not a dream job. That is a work ethic!

Yeah, true, you didn't complain. That's why I qualified it with the weasel-word "seemingly". Just feel fortunate (as I do!) that you don't have to punch a clock, take sh*t from your supervisors, go to 8 am meetings, face rush-hour traffic twice a day, or just plain do something you hate, cuz millions of people do. My hat is off to 'em.

Missed your reply, dawg. Yeah, you're right-- that was a cop-out. You're darn right I don't want to learn and practice. I lack the patience for it, and whenever I've tried, it just wasn't fun at all. It seemed like-- well.... WORK! I can't really disagree with anything you said, and I hope you didn't think I would. Anthony

Anthony..
Well..lessee genius...
Punch a clock..do you think musicians start when they want to..or when whoever they're working for tells them to..
Meetings at 8.am..how about meetings at 4 am (after working)
Taking [naughty word removed] from a supervisor..How about some mob gumbah telling you to get to the club an hour early every night (for free) to mix with the clientele..OR ELSE !
Rush hour traffic..how about trying to wend your way thru daytime drivers drunk every night who think your car is a freakin' bullseye.. How about no paid days off EVER
How about no medical coverage EVER
How about no Holidays off EVER
My hats off to me as well !
If somebody works a job they hate..well..that's their problem !
I'm not gonna feel guilty because I love what I do..I do this because I l;ove it..not cos' its easy !
You seem to think God just drops this ability on us..we just say..gee..I think I'll play and sing..yeah..nothin' to it. If there was nothin to it people like you wouldsn't pay to come and see it ! You'd do it yourself ! My band and I did a week with the flu one time..temps around 103..puking between every set..SMILING for the folks ! You'd have been at home whining for soup !@ My first wife snuck me out of a hospital at 3 in the morning once so I could get on a plane to go to New York for a show. I was getting paid squat but I had 12 other musicians and their families counting on me so I went ! You'd have been laying in bed on your sorry ass collecting a few more sick days !
Follow me around for a few weeks buster..I'll show you how "easy" it all is
No...I don't have to work that hard too much any more..but I've put my time in in the trenches to earn the easier ride I get now. But anybody that keeps the same job for as long as I have should be in that position.. If they're not..they picked the wrong thing to do..and that's not MY fault..so I don't take my hat off to them... I say..You poor schmuck..you should have had the guts to follow that dream ! Whatever it was...
I'm no hero either..I know dozens of men and women just like me who have chosen Music or Dance or Theatre as a profession.
If it looks easy to you it's just cos' the person you're watching is damn good !

Points well taken, Bob. In fact, as I was typing my last post, I was thinking, "I betcha Bob's gonna have a good comeback for this." FWIW, being self-employed like you (though just technically), I get no paid days off, sick days, vacation time or medical/dental coverage, so at least we're in the same boat there. It's a dead end job, mine is, but I still wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. It's easy as hell. The only thing I'm on the fence on is this "God-given talent" thing. Sure, great musicians only become great through practice, practice, practice, but I think everyone has a built-in maximum skill level, and I suspect mine isn't that high. Take people who can draw, for instance. They're practically born with that skill. Either you can draw, or you can't draw worth a damn. There's not a huge middle ground. So if I practiced hard, I could probably only become a so-so musician, so that's why I just say "to hell with it" and just pay to watch guys like you instead. Hey, I'm not saying my attitude is a good one to have, but that's how I feel. Friends...? Anthony

LOL! Bob Young is the last guy I ever thought I'd p*ss off (puss off?! ) on this board, but I guess I brought it on myself. Yeah, that's Anthony-- he just spreads joy and sunshine wherever he goes.... Okay, unless Bob (or someone else) replies to me again, this is my absolute last posting on this thread!!! Anthony

Hey Greg,
We don't have the recording equipment...but may see if we can locate some. Just don't count on it cause that means a lot of work for someone to copy and distribute the cassettes, take money, ship, etc. I know I don't have that kind of time...and not sure if anyone would..but I can ask around. Trouble is, it would require taping at least 8 hrs on two different nights...that is a LOT of tape. Heck..why don't you just take some time off and come over!! You deserve this!!

Hey Idamarie!!
We will be sure to save some of the fun till you get there!! Heck, you WILL be the fun when you arrive I am SURE of that! It will be great if some folks can get together and do some writing (in addition to all the other stuff that may occur..LOL) They do have a pool...but I suspect they might frown on skinny dippin in it. LOL
