Hello everyone!

I would like to reintroduce myself to my fellow DC area JPF members. My name is Sherelle Cary Smith. I was able to attend one of the first meetings when our chapter began. I moved here from a very small town amd it has taken me quite a while to get acclamated to driving and commuting by rail in such a big metro area. I seem to get very lost all the time and it gets a bit overwhelming. Plus, I work for the Washington Wizards and I work a lot of overtime. While it has been a wonderful experience, my heart longs so much to be in music full time and so slowly but surely, I am trying to position myself into that.

Also, I have been very fortunate to have landed an interview with the Washington Times two years ago and Voice of America Radio. The subject was the National Anthem, it's history and the difficulty of the song from a singer's perspective.

I also have been fortunate in getting a couple of my recordings added to the music library of the Smooth Jazz 105.9 Sunday Brunch. So far, I have played a total of three times in the past three months. The last time was this previous Sunday.

I am playing the lead in a musical play about Roberta Flack called, "Roberta Killing Me Softly" April 15th and 16th and the Market 5 Gallery in Eastern Market. I am helping the playwright out on the PR and so I have been in contact with her agent who is seriously considering sending someone down from New York to view the play. tickets are actually selling for this and I am nervous but excited about where this may go.

I guess what I am interested in is finding out about the dreams and aspirations of my fellow JPF members and find ways to lend moral support. I would like to know more about each member; What kind of music do you perform? Do you have a website? Where do you want to go musically? Earning a living in music or the arts is one of the hardest things I can think of. I haven't met a soul yet who can do it alone. There's always the temptation to give up on a musical dream. When you work a day job to make ends meeet, sometimes when a job opening comes along that would take you away from doing what you love, you are tempted to just shelve the dream (at least I have been). Then again, some may have been able to strike a happy balance. I guess these are the things I want to know about you. I know Flo (Hi Flo!) and what she does, but I would like to know more about everyone else who is part of this chapter if that's all right.

Right now, because of my schedule, my main option on getting to know everyone is via this message board. Thanks for taking the time to read!

Hi Sherelle,

Welcome back to the Boards...
It's usually pretty quiet in the Local Chapter Arena, but I'm glad you dropped in....I'm pretty new to JPF(officially, at least) and am looking forward to a local meeting coming up in early April...Right Flo?

Anyways, it sounds like you've already made great strides toward a musica/entertainment career & I want to wish you the best of all good things for your Roberta Flack musical coming up!!!!

I guess I'm one of the sorta-lucky ones who has a day job that he enjoys(it pays an almost liveable wage & often gives me a lot of free time to work on songwriting)...

Personally, since I didn't start taking songwriting seriously until I'd turned forty, & am now fifty, fat & balding, a career as an entertainer has taken a stroll down 'coulda-been alley'. However, pursuing songwriting itself will always be an option.

My music falls mainly in the Americana' genre, but I've concentrated on a few songs that have Country potential & am working my butt off to polish those songs up...

As far as performing, aftr a coupla years fronting a band, I've settled down in the last 4 years and simply play a Sunday Brunch once a week at a cafe in College Park...Been doing it for over four years now & find that it gets the performing jones outta my system & we ocassionally sell a CD, which is always a hoot...

Oh well, I've rambled enough for now....Keep checking in now & then, but it sounds like you've got a lot on your plate right now so please do keep your focus....

Best wishes.....Midnite...Oh, right, I'm also supposed to mention that I just put together a new, pretty simple, website that you can feel free to check out if you ever have any leisure time.....It can be found way down at the bottom of this Post...:-)

Hi Flo and Bob!

David L. Whitehead wrote and is directing the play. He is a professor at Southeastern University. Are your hunches right?

Bob thank you for the encouraging words and for telling me about yourself. It sounds like you know are where you want to be and what you do satisfies you. That's the bottom line.

For me, I started writing music and singing seriously when I was 15 years old back in 1973. It has been a huge part of me all my life...almost an obsession that I can't get away from. I wonder why that happens? At any rate, it is who I am and I am also at peace now that I have accepted that fact.

I will check out your website! Take care all!

Hi Flo!

Yes, I know what you mean but I am happy to say that things are a bit better now. I did the voice of Anita Baker in a play he did two years ago and yes, it was unorganized. I kind of promised myself that I wouldn't have any more dealings with him but a funny thing happened, he actually changed a bit! He still thinks and talks at the same time [Linked Image] but he has the ehlp of a very nice and savvy entertainment lawyer to keep him focused on things.

Sorry I meant to say "help". I also found out that Roberta Flack is sending someone down to see the play and that she wants David to tape it for her. No pressure though!!!!

I keep him in line too. I have been helping him from a producers viewpoint because he's trying to do so many things on his own. He has enlisted a musical director and I keep him on his toes with details as well. He's a good person who reallywants to see me and the other cast member get something out of it. His hope is to get the show to Broadway. I'm just taking it one show at a time.

Sherelle,

I joined JustPlainFolks, and its DC Chapter, today, and I would like to reply to your message while simultaneously introducing myself to the other members.

I am a singer, songwriter, and instrumentalist (guitars in particular, but also percussion) and in the Fall of 2004 I moved to northern Virginia. Since that time I have performed primarily at open-mics, though I have had two recent "gigs," one at Stacy's Coffee Parlor in Falls Church and another in Harrisonburg. I write and perform what has been dubbed "folk-gothic" songs, as I am influenced by traditional European music (and literature) as well as American jazz and blues, and my lyrics are often sociopolitical, though not always. I believe that entertainment and entertainers have been appropriated by privatized media and that instead, their true utility is in inspiring and leading communities by telling important stories, making important critiques, and donating some of the their proceeds to causes that benefit decent lives for the underprivileged and healthy treatment of our natural environment (which is in desperate need of informed, responsible treatment). This was, after all, the traditional, ancient, classical role of artists, before they became obsessed with self-promotion and canon-worship. Don't get me wrong, I would greatly appreciate a career in music, which involves some self-promotion, and I do have a sense of humor (it always sounds so humorless to say that about oneself, does it not?), but also an overriding sense of social responsibility. That is what motivates me as an artist and as a person, in answer to your open question.

It pleases me that there are artistic individuals, such as Flo, yourself, and others of JustPlainFolks who wish to create and maintain a community dedicated to creativity and action. Local art, or "folk art" in the most literal sense, is really the most important kind. I am eager to get involved, and would like to perform as part of the RoadShow, if at all possible. I enjoy listening to others' music, and especially collaborating with others on songwriting and playing ensemble in bands... and, I might as well add, while I am here posting, that I am looking for musicians to form a band.

-Stephen

Hi, my good friend!

Well, at your suggestion I came to JPF and signed on, and I'm so impressed by the people here. Nice "plain folks" who just want to help each other realize their dreams. Can't get much better than that.

Just wanted to let you know what a splash you're making. I typed in your name on the yahoo search engine and came back with over 200 links. Sounds like the "small town gal" is making some ripples in the pond. Of course, all they have to do is listen to your music on that website and, like me they're sold.

Fellow JPF members, this is a real lady, and one of the most positive people you'll find on any forum. I met her on another site and instantly felt like we'd been lifelong acquaintances. You'll never hear a negative word come out of her mouth, and she'll always leave you feeling motivated and cheered-up. If anyone deserves to have her dreams come true, "Doing What They Love," well, IMHO it's Sherelle Cary Smith.

Love ya sis...you keep singing your heart out.

"A lot of people will tell you that preparation is what will make you successful. But I think that people misunderstand exactly what that means sometimes. The type of preparation you need most is the kind that allows you to instantly seize an opportunity, change your course based on a momentary circumstance, and grab hold of the totally unexpected when it happens, and allow it to take you for the ride of your life! That is the kind of preparation that can lead to the most enjoyable type of success." -Brian Austin Whitney
