I've been poking and pinching this song for a long time and I think I'm finally close. I've had it up on the Country board and incorporated some of thier good suggestions. I'd like to get some final opinions before going into the studio and spending $$$$$.

“What The Other Boys Do” copyright 2006

Well once I was a pretty wild sight
Out in the honky-tonk every night
Well a long neck Lone Star looking for a fight
With nothing to win or lose

Wild red hair and them big green eyes
Stole my heart and I was hypnotized
Two times the fun of hanging with the guys
Sometimes you must just choose

Everybody thinks I’m crazy
They say that love has made me blind

Cause' I don't do what the other boys do no more
stay out drinking tyring to score
there's a big sign hanging on my ront door
say's if your looking for me I'm through
doing what the other boys do

Hey baby what’s on TV tonight
That dinner you made you made just right
You pour the wine and I’ll dim the lights
We’ll see where the evening goes

I never was a lover till I found you
Now I’m doing these things that I would never do
Opened my eyes to what is really true
I guess that’s just the way love grows

I hear the laughter out on the street
I know my friends are looking for me
They’re trying to save me from this fate
Hey Boys, You’re just a little too late

‘Cause I don’t do what the other boys do no more
Stay out drinking, trying to score
There’s a big sign hanging on my old front door
Says, if you’re looking for me I’m through
Well I Wouldn’t if I wanted to
Doing what the other boys do
What the other boys do…etc

i liked it pretty good but i don't know if it would be worth it to spend a lot of money on unless it's just for you and your friends to enjoy and stuff. i mean if getting it made into a big record would be to get it on the radio i don't think it would be a great enuogh song for that. i hope my opinion helps. thanks for posting it!!

Uncle Steve,

How are you? You did a fine job on this one.. I like the title and story and dont really here anything i would change.
Great arrangement by the way, people dont even realize how easy it is to mess a song up with the arrangement.

The only thing is your verse is very close to your chorus.
the melody, phrasing etc.. untill the end of the chorus where it starts to change. I'm not sure! I kinda like it because it's a familar melody in the song already and is seperated nicely and cleverly by the pre-chorus.. (which I also like)
You could throw a rhythm move in there to make the chorus stand out a little more..Something musical..

Love your vocal.. I think anything you put your heart & soul into is worth spending $$ on. I have invested every penny I have into my music. i wish you the best with this.

If you have trouble finding the right demo facility or you cant get a good price or whatever dont hesitate to ask me any questions.. This song is not so traditional country and is something I know I could do very well on. In other words I'll smoke this track [Linked Image]

I'm here to help not just sell my services..
So again if you have questions about recording or the way a studio is presenting itself to you.. deals agreements what ever, dont hesitate to ask..

Good Luck & Good Song!

Uncle Steve--You are very talented. Your vocal is great, always is.......You sound like somebody.....kinda John Anderson, sound..."Just a swingin".

Nice tune. I agree though about the seperation of the chorus to verse thing. Otherwise you have got it going on....

Hey maybe you need some of those "hoot owls" in there..... [Linked Image] LOL only kidding with you on that part. Take care. terribob

Hey Unc,
This is a good one...well I like it and do not see why it would not have commercial value.
Seems like you stumbled on this line just a bit

"Two times the fun of hanging with the guys"

Good job with the vocals and pickin'.

Howdy Unc,

I like it! I haven't heard anything with the same theme - very creative. I always like your voice and this one is no exception. I don't know a lot getting a song out there commercially, but it sure sounds fine to me.

substudio i bet you know more than me about this kind of thing so i will ask. is it ok to spend a lot of money on your songs if they can't get on the radio? i love all my songs but i don't spend the money because i am waiting to have a really good one that is worth investing in. i mean one that is really special. i love all my songs cause i wrote them but should that be enough? most of the websites i've been to in the last month tell me not to spend my money on them unless they are really great. i would hate to waste money and find out later on that they weren't really that good. do you know what i mean? thanks for helping me out.

Hi Gance, (Steve sorry to hijack your thread)

The way I have always seen it is simple...
"If you dont invest in your music why should anyone else"

Also you may never know which is the real special one or the one that may do somethng for you. If you are trying to succeed in the business.. your demo is SUPER important so that's gonna cost something.
But to give you the best practical answer which is all you need, Dont be like me everytime i get an idea in my head it cost me at least $800.00 [Linked Image] lol..

That's what this WONDERFUL forum is for.. test your songs out here. Go by the responses you get from us and other folks you know. Between live shows and that you will know which ones to record and invest in..

Dont even think about the word radio, that's a whole new problem in itself [Linked Image]

Hope this helps
Peace

Gance;
Thanks for the listen. I’ve resigned myself to fact that I won’t be winning Megabucks or making a lot money from my music anytime soon. So I write, re-write, tweak, record and re-record for the sole purpose of perfecting my art for my own expression and the enjoyment.

Thanks again
Unc

Sub;
Thanks for the listen and compliment. I get and use advice from several different boards and this song has been around the web a few times so I can’t take all the credit LOL. I really like your suggestion to make the chorus stand out with a rhythm move. I’d love to get “real” drums and a pedal steel in there. I may take you up on your offer to “smoke this track” when I feel it’s ready for “smoking’”

Thanks Sub
Unc

Tom;
Thanks for the listen and comments. Yes, I have been know to stumble!! When/if I get to the final recording I’ll have to pay a little more attention to my phrasing. Man I don’t think I’m ever gonna live down those “Hoot Owls” that were supposed to be doves. LOL

Thanks again
Unc

Clint;
Thanks, I was pretty proud of that theme, mostly because it was true!! Clint I have no idea what a commercially viable song is. I’ve given up on trying to figure that out. I just like to write ‘em, play ‘em and record ‘em. It sure beats golf LOL.

Thanks
Unc

Gance (again)
I’ve spent many a starry eyed dollar on studio time thinking that I had a hit song on my hands only to realize that no matter how much my family and friends said it was great, the reality is, that it was just alright. I’ve been bitten by this bug over and over again and don’t doubt that I will again. My advice to you is be patient. Patience is the greatest tool you can have. This is just my opinion gleaned from my experiences.

The best of luck to you
Unc

Uncle Steve,

I love your style. I think this is two for two. This is a real love song from a man's perspective. It's a man's thought, but still tender. We all hear that call of the pack o dogs out there saying to come howl with them. But love and loyalty is stronger. Great theme.

Musically, I have two little nits. One I would change and one I would not. The first easy fix is "what's on TV" I don't like it, and it doesn't fit with the romance you're setting up in the same verse. John Prine's "Blow Up Your TV / Spanish Pipedream" is one of my faves so I'm biased. The other is that the beginning sounds very very much by a latter Van Morrison song which I think is called "Lifted up to the Lord." The melody you put over the progression is completely different, but you may want to check that out and alter the arrangement just a little for contrast, especially if you're going to shop this. I wouldn't change the progression, just think about it.

Anyway, another great song.

Jay

Gance,

The world of recording is changing. The fact that we are here is evidence to that. You can do very good recordings at home now. In some ways, it may sound better because commercial stuff is getting processed in ways that I think actually decreases sound quality. Sinking money into top quality musicians, that's hard. I'm glad I'm not yet to the point where I worry about that. I'm just networking and right now I've been lucky enough to find friends and colleagues up to the task. Some of the collabs on sites like this can be pretty good. I just finished working with one of the best, if not the best, singer I've ever worked with in a collab on this site.

Sub has real business experience I don't, but the internet is rapidly changing things. We're all learning right now.

Jay
