Is this satire? I was having serious doubts about posting this one. It's just the images on my TV are giving me so many emotions from Anger, Frustration, Sorrow, Pain and so many others. My heart really does go out to those who have loved ones in Iraq. I just had to get my feelings out and forgive me if they are badly expressed. Not really lyrics just sentiments that flew out. Track 1 http://www.ampcast.com/Gerry My TV is Killing Me I’m slowly coming to the conclusion that it’s out to get me I’m getting hit by images that I don’t wanna see And they’re coming straight out the tube and aimed at me That things killing me Lots of hungry kids with big wide eyes While the man in the suit steals aid And tells more lies I just don’t believe some of the things that I see My T V’s killing me I see people dying Right in front of me There ain’t much peace coming out of my TV I see them being killed And that’s killing me I’m addicted to hell On Channels 1, 2 and 3 While sitting in front of My TV And you know it’s killing me Now I know whose right And I think that’s plain for everyone to see But you know pain don’t take sides On my TV And that’s what’s killing me I’m drawn like a moth to flame That’s me And I feel I’m to blame For what’s on my TV And that’s what’s killing me copyright © 2003 Gerry Cooper ------------------ http://www.ampcast.com/Gerry [This message has been edited by Gerry (edited 03-27-2003).] [This message has been edited by Gerry (edited 03-27-2003).] [This message has been edited by Gerry (edited 03-30-2003).]

Hi Gerry!
I didn't get the feeling from this that you were in any way trivializing the current "current event". There are indeed some terrible things happening in the world. It's sad and evokes all the emotions you described in your preamble.
However,I totally enjoyed the nonchalant, conversational way you delivered it! And that groove! Wow, this is my favorite song from you so far! Exellent!
Rob
PS It kind of remindsme of David Byrnes's stuff!

WOW!!!!!!!! satire? I don't think so. Trivializing current events? not a chance Overflowing with true emotion? You bet! All I can say is if you had done this at the open mic I used to sing at before I moved, they would have given you a standing ovation. Cuts right down to the basic gut level feelings. simply awesome. (and even as much as I'm not a big sax fan, it works really well here.) ------------------ Harriet http://www.soundclick.com/bands/9/harrietamesmusic.htm

Gerry Superb take on things My family back in Liverpool tell me some famous British journalist (can see his face but can't remember his name) is selling a CD doing something similar but I havn't heard it yet. Remember Alexi Sale talking "Hello Johns got a new motor" - loved it. The Brit accent and the deep tones give this piece alot of character. The mix standard is very high and clear also. Its an interesting musical idea you are using and to great effect indeed. Your willingness to try out new ideas amazes me. I also wish I had those sax samples. They are so real. What are they? Great stuff - I liked it alot. Tony

Cool and light music to set up a serious topic,,,,,or is it serious,,,,,,you're right,,,(satire?) I don't know if it's meant to be funny or not. The point is there if I want it,,,or just a fun song, if that's what I want. It says something, that;s for sure,,,,,so whether it's sad or fun,,,,,you "said something"! Frank Zappa like.

Gerry, I totally agree and to "prove it", I stay away from cable and statellite! Even an antenna wouldn't help much out here in the boonies where I live due to the high mountains. Hence, my TV got "killed" a long time ago, and thank God, now it can't kill me! LOL
Hey, great groove you got going there. If all you intended was to deliver a cool "spoken word" message, this is perfect as is. But tell you what... I hear a great vocalist doing a nice melodic groove ala R & B or a bit of smooth jazz "blues" style (fusion?).
Seriously, you've got the kind of quality tracks that serious (creative) singers would just love to work with! Your tracks deliver the "goods" to easily help good singers find a perfect melody for their parts!

Why thank you all. I meant Satire as in Ironic and certainly not humor but I will accept it's the wrong word. I just couldn't see a genre to fit it in on Ampcast and saw Satire, YUK Genres slay me (No pun intended) Glad you liked it Rob and the strange thing is it was done and dusted in less than four hours. Thanks Harriet glad it hit the same buttons and would you believe I have been looking at it again today. Hello Tone promise not tell anyone the Sax is not from a sound bank it's Midi. Generated from Guitar converted from Midi to Dig Audio and reverb, pinch of chorus, equalized etc added in Sonar XL. Hello John no it most certainly was not meant to be funny quite the opposite it was a genuine reaction to what I am seeing on my TV. Like I said at the top Satire was the wrong word. Hello Kaley thanks very much I have never thought of myself as being able to write and to be honest I have the same hang up about writing as I do singing. I have this fear of making a complete fool of myself. Don't ask me why I'm just nuts. Hello Michael I do not have satelite etc but just watch the normal Spanish TV Channels. unfortunately they have no censorship and show footage from any source including El Queda. You really would not want to see some footage. Regarding backing tracks and having R&B type vocals on this. If anyone on JPF would like to sing this one drop me a line and I'll post up the backing track. Thanks all again for your ears and encouragement. I'll honestly try and keep away from the TV this weekend but I know it's going to be difficult. VERY cool Gerry! I love it! Reminds me of the kind of thing that Knopfler might have come up with in some funny way. Nice groove, excellent recording, great lyrics and that midi'd sax is spot on. Nice to hear something from you without that lush string thing you often have. Nice contrast.
Cheers
Simon

Thanks Simon. Ah the strings I was raised to the sound of Mantovani and my love of sweeping string sections has stuck almost permanently LOL I'm going to try and get some news broiadcasts from Iraq and perhaps put it in the background during the instrumental break. Just an idea. Thanks buddy, Gerry ------------------ http://www.ampcast.com/Gerry

Gerry Do you remember a Simon & Garfunkle song "Silent Night / 9 O'Clock News" (on the "Parsely, Sage...." album I think?). They put a 6/8 feel under the traditional Lyrics (L SIde) and a news reader (R Side) with items like; Dr Martin Luther King will be in.....(the place he was shot) tomorrow to address..." Report on the Boston Strangler and his victims and ending with a comment on Vietnam. Sends shivers up my spine every time I hear it I'd love to do something like that myself but I'm not at that level - yet Its a very effective genre if its done correctly/tastefully Tony

Glad you're on Tone I have re-mastered this track and would be interested in your thoughts. I had thought of adding some CNN Broadcast commentaries as a low back drop on the instrumetal. I have a problem I can't CNN on my TV or Radio. I'm working on it as always thanks for your in put and I do know exactly what you mean. Gerry ------------------ http://www.ampcast.com/Gerry

Gerry Had a listen to the latest mix It is exactly right in mix, balance, tone etc Whatever you did to improve it I can't explain. I can only hear the diference. Maybe if I said it sounds more subtle somebody may understand Like I said, great idea I cannot stress enough what some major headline news items being read far back in the mix (L or R side?) would do to make this one even better. I don't think anyone (like CNN or BBC) would bother themselves about copyright unless you were reproducing for profit in mass quantities or using it in a way they consider would besmirch their escutcheon I really like it. Incidentally, I think Martin Johnston, in the UK, is the journalist who is selling a CD with background music and him talking (reporting about social and world affairs?) over the top of it. The opposite of the Simon & Grfunkle Silent Night/ 9 O'Clock News" example I gave before I know but in a similar style Very different stuff Tony

This is SO great Gerry!! Wow what a message in here. TV can be good, but yep, it can be completely opposite at times. Just glad that at least there's still Cartoons on for my kiddos to watch these days (and myself) for a break from the news. Nicely done Take care, Amelia ------------------ http://www.soundclick.com/bands/1/ameliarosemusic.htm

Thanks Amelia I guess some people will say you have an Off Button but I honestly do want to know what is going on. Yet when I see I'm not sure that I do. I remember as a child seeing the footage of the Allied troops going in to places like Belsen. I'm still not sure I have ever recovered from those images. Let's hope and pray our troops can get the job done as quickly as possible and return home safely to their families. Meanwhile we have the TV. Thanks Tony I'll watch out for that one. I think it is going to have to be done at a later date. I just can't get face it at the moment. Gerry.... listened...and you did a really good job..on this...... wasn't what I was expecting ...but think you came across as sincere.... really liked Tony's suggestion of having the headlines read in background....think that would really add to this even more... in case..good job, Kaley a
