Here's the final info/update on the Philadelphia Just Plain Folks Roadtrip Events. Please Read all the info below. If you still have questions, email them to justplainfolks@aol.com and place "Question" in the subject and we will answer ASAP.

These should be two really fun events and I am looking forward to seeing all the Philly area folks!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Brian's 10 Simple Rules to make the Show go smoothly:

After hundreds of these showcases over the last 7 years all over North America, I've learned a few good rules to make them work the best. So here's 10 rules to make it easier and more fun for everyone:

1. NO onstage tuning! That means NONE! We will give you ample notice when your slot is coming up. Be completely tuned and ready to plug in (whatever instrument you are playing) and play when your time comes. Also, if you are playing guitar, make sure you make eye contact and get the "OK" from the sound person BEFORE you plug in or unplug so we can be sure the channel is muted first. Also, make sure before the show your guitar battery works!

2. Please perform your very best song that lasts under 5 minutes. Please no 12 minute ode's to your cat or 18 minute Prog Rock/experimental Jams. This is your chance to blow the room away with your talent and writing skill (and let us get your very best effort on camera). Don't waste it on a new song you wrote on the way to the show. This is the time for your biggest crowd pleaser.

3. Please no political/religious/rants/speeches/diatribes. This is a music event, not a political/religious event. You are welcome to do political or religious songs, but remember, any political speech you make will likely offend 50% of the rest of the audience and religion can be a touchy subject to someone who believes differently. Let your music tell your story if that is the type of music you do and don't make speeches from the stage. Long song explanations aren't productive either. Do, however, tell folks who you are, make a few comments if you'd like (humor is always good) and say your name again after you peform (so we get it on film).

4. CD's. You are welcome to sell them, but remember almost everyone else has a CD to sell as well. Trading or giving out CD's is a great networking tool if you can afford it, but some artists can't, so don't expect everyone to trade unless they offer.

5. JPF T-Shirts and Hats. We have BRAND NEW T-SHIRTS! This will be the first show we'll have our new shirts for sale. It's a color variation of our original shirts from 1999 which people have been requesting the last few years. We have them in Black, Purple and a Light Khaki Brown type color called Prarie Dust. We have Black and Prarie Dust in Long Sleeves too! We also have our trademark JPF Red Hats. Remember, we fund the entire organization from T-Shirt/Hat sales, member donations and some community partner sponsorships. But the Roadtrips are generally funded entirely with money collected at shows. Help us out so we can help you!

JPF Signature Hat: 20.00
JPF T-Shirt: Short Sleeve: 15.00 (17.00 for XXL and XXXL)
JPF T-Shirt: Long Sleeve: 20.00 (22.00 for XXL and XXXL)
JPF Hat and Shirt: $5 dollar discount off combined price depending on size/type.

We also accept donations of any size if you don't want a hat or shirt. But you should plan on getting a shirt or hat. People will stop you on the street when you wear it and tell you they're JPF members too! (It's happened to members literally around the world!). The shirt theme is "We're All In This Together."

6. Cancellations: We understand things come up. But please try and email us to justplainfolks@aol.com the day before a show with any cancellations. If you have a problem on the day of the show, please call the venue to let us know so we can make adjustments to the lineup. Unannounced no shows at events may result in you being placed last in future events or eliminated altogether.

7. Come early, stay late! I am usually at the venue at least an hour before the show getting ready. Feel free to come and say hi during that hour. If a show ends at a reasonable time, I may be available to grab some coffee or a snack nearby to unwind with a group of members. In general, please try to come for the entire event or as much as possible. Someone has to go first and someone has to go last and we want them to get to perform for as many peers as possible. We take our traditional group photo at the end of the show as well, so if you stay, you'll end up on our home page for a few months in the Roadtrip photos.

8. These shows are not filtered in any way. You may see some folks who will blow you away with their talent, and you might find some that belong in a blooper reel from bad American Idol auditions. Either way, please treat everyone with respect and support. Even the best performers among us had to start somewhere, and if our own community of peers don't give a chance for entry level folks to get their feet wet, who will? Lets celebrate the diversity and if someone is really not doing well in their performance, be glad it isn't you and offer some friendly support! That's the best way for them to learn, get better and grow.

9. Network, Network, Network! Bring business cards and a friendly demeanor and meet as many people as you can. You'll never know what good can come out of a new contact, and often doors open that you hadn't even thought of. There's a lot of folks to meet at these events, so don't waste the opportunity!

10. If there is a problem, relax, it will get fixed. We're here to have fun. Stuff will happen and things will go wrong, they always do. We'll get past it, so don't stress. Be flexible and we'll be flexible and that should allow us to have fun and get past anything that comes up.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's the current lineups and locations.

Note: All performers are eligible for the 2005-2006 Live Artist of the Year Award at our next music awards with a featured performance slot in Hollywood, CA

Friday, May 27th: The Daily Grind in 134 S. York Rd. Hatboro, PA. 7-10PM

This is an acoustic only showcase. Seating for 50, so get there early if you want seats for your party as they are first come first served. I will be there at 6PM and the show will start at 7PM. I've broken up the lineup in 3 segments. This is a short show (for us anyway) so if there's a timing problem, let us know and we'll make the change. We should be finished at or before 10PM. Its likely we'll finish ahead of schedule, so please try and come for the entire show and keep in mind that you're more likely to go on early than scheduled rather than later than scheduled. Also, the TBA's listed on the lineups are for emergency changes that need to be made. Otherwise those are empty slots.

This will be 1 song per performer. If time allows, any former JPF Music Award winners/nominees will get a second song based on our long standing tradition.

Saturday, May 28th Philly Picnic/Back Yard Jam/Documentary Filming

This is always one of my favorite events of the year. It's a very casual and fun neighborhood party at Bonnie Warren's home in Plymouth Meeting, PA. It's also a pitch in dinner event. In addition to being laid back, it also allows the longest performance slots of the entire Roadtrip Tour. Bands will get 3 songs and solo artists 2 songs with an option of doing a second round as time allows after everyone has performed. That way you can play in front of different people as they come and go. The timing for this event is 2PM-8PM for full PA and Band music with additional acoustic performances up until Midnight, or whenever we've all had enough! In addition, I will be set up inside to do short interviews for the documentary with EVERY SINGLE ARTIST who is interested. (This (and the Campfire show in Hartford) are the only shows that guarantees you an interview for the documentary!). Performances are in the backyard (and possibly inside later in the evening). Here's more info from Bonnie:
----------------------------------------------------
Backyard Open Mic Music Party

This is a "bring a dish", all ages, no alcohol, fun family event.
Children are welcome but please supervise your young ones.

*Saturday, May 28th (the Sat. of Memorial Day weekend),2005
Raindate: Sunday, May 29th, same times
*From 2p-8p (earlier this year due to township noise ordinance….)
(leave for your Memorial Day weekend trip after the party!)

At the home of Bonnie and Jon Warren:
1504 Boyer Blvd.
Plymouth Meeting, PA 19462
(Please do not obstruct street access into and out of the neighborhood when parking.)

If you have questions about the house, food, directions etc. please call (home) 610-272-6592; (cell) 610-420-9388 Bonsongs@aol.com (please call if you are canceling - this is a private home so we would appreciate some idea of how many people are coming -- whether or not you perform)

Raindate: Sunday, May 29th, 2005, same times
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's the list of artists confirmed to attend and perform. Because of the nature of this event, we aren't setting time slots. This list is in totally random order and the numbers don't mean anything. We will set performance slots/times at the event (it works out better that way). If you have a time need (i.e. early, late or whatever) we can handle it at the show. If you need to come late or leave early, that is fine too! Just get your performance in and sit for the interview before you leave! This is a good time to bring CD's as we'll have a high than normal number of music fans at this show that our usual networking shows. We usually get 40-60 local neighbors coming through during the party.

Note: I am not sure yet what the back-line options will be for this show. Once I find out, I will post that information here. We will definitely have a PA, but will need to work together for the shared drums, amps and keyboard.

About the Documentary:

All showcase performances are recorded for potential use in the documentary. In addition, we may fire questions at performers on stage for candid short answers. (i.e. Who's the best local artist in your area and why, what was the worst gig you ever played, what's the funniest thing that ever happened in your career etc.. and even quicker questions like: who's your favorite artist, what's your favorite song etc.. be prepared to give a quick answer in those cases rather than a long story).

These will be some of our first sit down interviews at Saturday's event for the 2 year JPF Grassroots/Indie Artists in North America Documentary project. We like to ask impromptu questions and take the interview wherever it naturally leads. We just bought all this equipment and so we'll also be experimenting a bit with lighting etc.. to get the best results.

If you have interesting stories, funny, tragic, inspirational, amazing, shocking or other music related tidbits from your own musical life or that have happened in your community, be ready to share them. Remember, to make it into the final documentary, you'll have to concise, interesting, entertaining and/or riveting. We have over 1000 artists participating in the first leg of this tour alone, so the most compelling interviews (and those that can say the most interesting things in the least amount of screen time) have the best shot of being used in the final project. If you have a particularly compelling story to share, we may turn it into a feature interview and reschedule you for additional interview time on Sunday if you are available.

We can answer more questions at the events or email them to me at justplainfolks@aol.com.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
See you all in Philly! Thanks to Bonnie Warren, Vince James and Mick Choder for their help in setting up these events!

Hi there!

I just saw the revised schedule & I'm sad. If the showcase is on either Thursday 4/26 or Saturday 4/28, then I'll be unable to attend as I'm already booked on those dates. (I RSVP'd last week for the Friday showcase) :-( Please let me know of any other opportunities availble to meet w/ JPF friends. I haven't been contacted yet by any Philly coordinators. Please let me know what I can do to help out w/ the Roadtrip.

Thanks!

Our plan is still for a Friday show and a Saturday picnic/Block party. I just switched the dates with Wilmington so we can do something with them. They weren't available for the Thursday. Nothing was scheduled for Monday in Philly. On Thursday, we will likely do some filming or if demand warrants, do an additional show. It would also be a fall back if we can't get a venue for Friday. So far no word on whether we've found one or not.

Hi Brian,
I've been too busy with other things lately, and I haven't written anything for quite a while, so I'm not sure it makes sense to sign up for a showcase performance. But I still want to be supportive and come out to hear what others are doing. I hope enough people sign up, 'cause I'm looking forward to seeing you again in Philly.

Hi Nicki!
We're still working on finding the best venue(s) for that weekend, but we DO have a venue for Friday 5/27, so don't worry! How can you help? If you happen to have connections with a good place for a Philly-area showcase, please let me know! (Just email me directly, please.) Also, I hope you'll be able to sqeeze in a visit at the party on 5/28. It goes on for hours! Looking forward to seeing you again. [Linked Image]

Thanks!

Hello again Brian, and folks from the Del-Val area!

This is John A. Daubert of "New Yesterdays". (that's Buddy Holcombe's and my online artist name). SO FAR, we're not a band, as I play and sing our songs by recording multitracks at my home. We thought of New Yesterdays from realizing many people like the music of yesterday, (60's and some early 70's), and, we offer new songs with those influences; New Yesterdays! We think a trend for melody-strong songs and good feeling lyrics could make a return. If so, we're armed with many songs for all ages, including the babyboomers to hopefully enjoy. They just might all be ready for something new they can relate too again. ???

I will play one of our songs, "Too Little Time", at The Daily Grind on Friday. I haven't played out since my band days in the 70's, and will be playing solo. Piano is my main instrument, with drums a long time favorite, but I will be plaing my humble guitar, since I already went to the daily Grind this past Friday and looked through the windwow to see there's no piano. The place was closed, eevn though the hours said 9 to 10. But, I can play enough chords on guitar to do most of our songs in rythym style. Did it for the recording of this and other songs, so I have no excuse! (Just don't ask for a Clapton lead!)

To give a brief idea of music experience, I'll paste one of our onlne bios:
John Daubert & Buddy Holcombe started writing songs together in 1978, twelve years after playing separately on the East Coast and in Europe.
John Daubert performed on piano at the Spectrum in Philadelphia with the Philadelphia Orchestra for a Rock & Roll song. Daubert also played piano with Chuck Berry, and many other artists with his band. Along with piano, he plays guitar, drums, bass and strings/horns on keyboard. Daubert sings and plays all the parts on their songs. Buddy Holcombe wrote songs, sang lead, played drums, horn and guitar for his band in Germany and France. Holcombe writes lyrics/assists with the music, and creates a lot of the parts for strings an horns. Their growing number of songs, (over 100), includes: Brit Rock, Pop/Rock, Adult Contemporary, Country Pop/Rock, as well as having scored Films.

I played solo for the first time last Thurday at my home town coffee house, to get a feel for what I'm in for this Friday. I had fun, although I had Elvis legs for a while! Different than being with a band, as I remember!) I am just hoping I can present this particular song on guitar that Brian asked me to do, as good as my recording of it, which took several takes and overdubs.

I am looking forward to meeting and hearing all of you this Friday! Should be a fun night! I also hope to learn a lot about solo performing from you veterans. The thing is, I may be older than most the veterans that have the solo experiences! Never say never!

Thanks again Brian for asking me to play that song at this event. Like I said before, I am honored by your asking, although at first, I was caught in the headlights. [Linked Image]

EVERYBODY: I think I'll play better solo if you sing along to the chorus, or dance around!:

CHORUS: 1:But 2nd:Cause. 3rd:Yeah.......
There's too little time
To love with all the want to(s)
Too little time in life
So for now we'll love today
Said for now we'll love t'night
Together time's flying bye bye

OK< I should be good to go!
Thanks!

John A. Daubert

PS. I am usually quiet among a crowd, so don't expect the same rambling as when I type. I tend to observe, (the writer in me, or just shy).???
And they all said; "Thank God"!

I can't believe that in an hour i will be leaving for a 2 1/2 hour trip from Westchester, N.Y. to Bonnie and Jon's backyard somewhere in Pennsylvannia! I am packing up my electric cello, a box of CDs, some snacks, and my credit card for gas! This should be fun.

If you see a bright blue SUV with VONCELLO on the lisence plate passing you on the highway...honk!

I just want to thank everyone for this past weekend. It was like Fantasy Island; Performing at the Daily Grind on Friday night and again at Bonnie's on Saturday, hanging out with other performers, getting interviewed. It was quite an experience. It is amazing to see and hear so many people with so much talant and desire to write and perform their work. I was impressed with so many people; Kierstin, Deanna, Nicki, Jackie Tice, John Daubert, Vincent Tomasso, Alexis, the guy who sang the Uterus song and the prescription drug song are just a few that I can remember. I wish I had a video so I could replay it. There was a guy (Jim? who was the head of something) who played a beautiful song about taking his daughter fishing. The Frank Porter band knocked me out. Mick Choder with his great guitar work and MC duties kept the Picnic event flowing. Thanks Bonnie and Jon for your hospitality and great grill work. Everything was great. And of course thanks to Brian for putting this whole thing together. Kevin
