I have a couple of questions for you: I'd just like to know how some people who move to Nashville to try for a break or just want to be involved in the music business, or whatever, set this up. Did you have a job lined up first? Did you have a place to live lined up? Or did you just hit town and set up all that once you got there? Thanks for sharing your feedback! Wendy V www.wendyv.com

I had a job with the band Red, white, and Blue(grass). We broke up about a year after I moved here and I stayed. I'd recommend having a job before you move here. It's very hard to find music work right away here. Try to line up a job and have an emergency fund in place before moving here. Nashville's a tough town, but I love it. The musicians are top caliber, there are gigs where you can play at the highest level, and in twenty minutes or less you can drive to some of the finest scenery anywhere. You've got to know your limitations. I don't know what your limitations are. I found out what mine were when I was twelve. I found out that there weren't too many limitations, if I did it my way. -Johnny Cash It's only music. -niteshift Mike Dunbar Music

Hello Wendy,
I had a job and a place to live lined up before we moved here and we don't regret it one single bit.
Once you get a little ways from the city housing is very affordable...but like Mike says, music jobs are tough to get.

I didn't have a job or a place to live, didn't know a soul and moved here with hubby and 3 children under 10. We stayed in a motel for a month while I waitressed and he found temp jobs and we got ourselves into a house.
Talk about a leap of faith!! whewww. What a wild ride that was!!

Oh God....LOL.. and here I'm about to make the move. leaving behind the security blanket and all...LOL someone posted that when you get away from the city, housing is more affordable. so, where would that be??? I'll be in Nashville the 28th of this month finishing the last 6 songs on my new C/D and would love to secure a place to live while I'm there. By the way, I would possibly consider the roommate thing if anyone is looking.

Hey again, Brandon, There are two sides to moving to a location out of town. You can find some good prices on rent and you can live in some beautiful areas, but it's more expensive to do your businesss in Nashville. You might want to check out somewhere south on I-65 if you'll be travelling to Huntsville for visits, it's an expensive area though. Maybe East to Smyrna by I-24 or even Murfreesboro, they have some decent prices. I don't know about now, but when I moved here...24 years ago, there were small places available for a decent price in the Vanderbilt/Music Row area, sort of student/musician housing LOL. I lived there for a few years and was able to walk to the clubs, studios, and musician hangouts. Talk about saving money while you are networking. Nowdays they may be small places for high prices; You could save enough in transportion, like 2 or 3 bucks a day in gas and another 6 or 8 in vehicle wear and tear if you are 30 to 50 miles out. That could be a hundred bucks a month you could save by living close to the networking area. That's a thought. I live near Madison, Tennessee, Madison was a small town just north of Nashville, but some years ago, Nashville took over the entire county of Davidson, absorbing Madison. It's a fairly quiet, not terribly expensive area. East Nashville is less, I lived there before having children. It's a little rougher area with a higher crime rate, but I grew up on the South Side of Chicago, so it seemed like Sleepytown U.S.A. to me. You can find real good deals there, but it's more like city living. When you start looking, run some addresses by me, I might know a little about the areas. We'll be looking forward to having you here. Mike ------------------ Mike Dunbar Music [This message has been edited by Mike Dunbar (edited 07-21-2003).]

Wow Mike... sounds like you truly know your way around....LOL Choices, choices, choices.... I guess when I'm up next week, I'll take a look around. I'm going to try to schedule part of the session around thursday so I can stay in town thursday night and go to The Hall of Fame, at least, thats the plan. I'm trying to narrow the final selection of original songs to do and it's tough. I think I'll just hang them all on the wall, and throw darts.....LOL Anyway, thanks again for the input, and I'll buzz ya with some addresses. Brandon

Hi Again Terri...LOL... We seem to be running into each other all over the internet...LOL. By the way, I visited your site the other day, and it was awesome :-) I had a blast the 17th at the Hall of Fame with ya'll, and was very excited when you offered the spotlight thing to me. I have to admit that I was a bit distracted on the first song (couldnt hear myself)lol... but on the second western swing thing, I caught you out of the corner of my eye just a'gittin it....LOL By the way... After hearing you sing... I have a funk thing I wrote sometime back that I truly feel that you and the guys would have a BLAST with. Brandon Lynn Shane
