I'm getting ready to register a collection of my songs with the US Copyright Office. The problem/question I have is that there is another songwriter/artist who I share a name with, Charles Billingsley. I want to be sure that if any of my songs are published or recorded, that the royalties are not paid to someone else by mistake.
Should I register the songs under the name Chuck Billingsley instead of Charles to avoid confusion?

An intresting problem. One solution would be to have a legal name change. You could add a middle name, (If you don't already have one)to distinguish yourself from the other person. You can also use a pseudonym instead of your real name. You should download and print out the PA form and read it carefully to understand what is needed. If it is confusing retain a lawyer for help. Good Luck.
You could also add a nickname to your name such as Charles (Ragtop) Billingsley, or other such nickname and use it for all your identification from now on.

Chuck, The copyright forms require a Social Security number, and a signature. Unless you self publish, your publisher and PRO will collect royalties, and they should know who you are. I don't think you need to worry. Chas

Thanks for the advice guys. It is a sort of a unique situation. I'm sure there are plenty of Jim Browns and Mary Smiths out there with the same problem.
I think I'm just going to use "Chuck Billingsley", maybe include a middle initial. That's what I've always gone by anyway (with the exception of a few of those picky college professors who refused to call us by 'nicknames').
Chas, I don't see a spot on the form for a SSN. I thought that would probably be the best way to distinguish, but I don't see where they ask for it.

There is no place on the PA or PA short form for a SSN. Why don't you just use Charles "Chuck" Billingsley on your Copyright Registration forms. That may do it. A Publisher will know who you are as well as your name and address and it will be included on any WORK REGISTRATION FORMS filed with a PRO as well as your SSN when a song is recorded and released.

I'm sure this happens quite often. I'm equally sure that there have been several songs with the same title written by people with the same name. I'd guess that your address, along with a copy of the exact song, will take care of it. Also, you might ask your PRO (BMI, ASCAP etc.) how they handle such cases. You've got to know your limitations. I don't know what your limitations are. I found out what mine were when I was twelve. I found out that there weren't too many limitations, if I did it my way. -Johnny Cash It's only music. -niteshift Mike Dunbar Music

Chuckster,
You're right. My idea sucks. But, I'm happy to have uncovered another baseball fan.
