I've been reading this board for the better part of the day, and I am amazed at the amount of information that this forum provides.

I'm just wondering what I need.

I'm a hip hop composer in toronto, which is to say that I make beats. What I'm looking for (I think) is a manager of some sort to sell my beats. I'm not sure how to get exposure "in the real world" because I can't gig hip hop instrumentals, tho that would be nice.

My questions are, where do I start?
Are there any other routes I can take that I should be aware of?

Are you deep into your local scene? There's got to be people out there with lyrics looking for someone to do the tracks.

I'd suggest looking at where the hip-hop artists in your town do their recordings. Contact those studios and let them know you've got beats that need lyrics and to keep you in mind if they have clients looking for beats. Also, take your demos to any shows where the hip-hop community will be.

I don't think you need a manager to do this, you just need to get into the network so people know who you are and what you do.

Kawlinz,

I agree with Scott. Typically the Rap community is always on the look out for great tracks to use. I'd say what you do is far more in demand than Rap artists themselves. (Assuming of course your tracks are great.. if not, then that's an entirely different discussion).

You should be out at the hip hop/rap shows in town scoping out new talent. If I were you, I would look for talent that you think would work well with your beats and approach them directly. That's the best way to get started. If you find a cool up and coming Rap artist and you supply him/her with some killer tracks, you're on your way. It's the folks who only write lyrics that have it very hard.

You should post some links to your tracks on our mp3 feedback board, explain you're looking for feedback on the Tracks (and make sure they understand they're just backing tracks for Rap). I would be happy to check them out when I have a minute.. though I can't give you a lot of in depth feedback, I can let you know if you're at least competitive with the quality of the top Rap music we're receiving this year. We had over 800 Rap artists send us CD's this year making it the second largest category in our awards this year after Rock.

Thanks for the ideas guys.

I'm not very deep into the hip hop scene as of yet, I'm just a guy who's been making tunes of various genres for about 10 years to so.

I've been making hip hop tunes on and off for about 7 years, so I'd say the amount of experience alone I have is a good base, and I will post some samples fairly soon. My worry is that, since much hip hop comes from loops, that posting a naked beat, that is, the beat without vocals, will just get stolen online.

I will check out some local studios, but I have no idea of the selling rate or an asking price if there is interest. I know some hip hop producers get 100,000 selling some of their beats, but that doesn't help me. I need to know what the average price for a song for an unknown producer with decent tracks would be. I'm in the toronto area if that helps at all.

As for hip hop shows, there aren't many around anymore from what i hear except the bigger name acts, it's mostly just clubs with DJs nowadays.

Kawlinz,

I can tell you the average price: Zero. Until you have a rep or until you've worked with someone who endorses your work, there's no market or value in your tracks. You've got to make a connection with someone. Networking is a key part. Knowing what is going on in your market is as well. At one time there was a market for people making loops etc.. for tracks, but even that has mostly dried up. The producer is king in Rap music and those are the guys you need to impress and work with to get serious money. Until you do, even giving away your beats will not be easy. That's why hooking up with some talent to Rap with your beats is the fastest way to get someone's attention. Are there other shortcuts? Sure.. there's ALWAYS an exception to everything. Just like someone actually eventually wins the lottery. But the odds are so slim that you can waste an entire creative lifetime pursuing it to get the short cut when you could instead simply put in the work to do it in a more traditional way with much more successful results.

Good luck,

Brian

It comes from homemade loops not prebought.

If you can craft cool grooves and music over it, you can find up and coming rappers that will want to use it. Partner with them and co-write the song with them.

Actually it's suprising how much hip hop comes from premade loops.. even knaye west, who samples his leads and stuff, uses prebought drum loops, which really suprised me.

Thanks for all the help guys [Linked Image]

Hey,
We may be interested in buying your hip hop tracks. We look for composers to write us simple 8 bar tracks for a piece of software we have developed. Having your tracks in our product may be a good portfolio piece for you.
Send me some samples and I'll let you know if we're interested. You can send me a link to samples online, or just email a couple of sample mp3 tracks to careers@9trackmind.com

By the way, we're looking for
RAP | HIP HOP | ROCK | CLASSIC ROCK
tracks right now if you know anyone else that may be interested in writing some generic stuff...
