Boy Howdy!

Other than a good tune and great marketing....

What I want to hear from the Fantastic Dinosaurs is, can the pure strength of a song lift it from obscurity to hit status? Would we know it if we heard it?

Example, if we were reviewing a tune over on the mp3 board, would we know enough to tell that someone was going to have a hit?

Do you believe that great songs can and do remain somewhat undiscovered, or do they have the power on their own to rise to the top?

I don't hear that many undeniably groovy tunes on the net that rock me to the point of undiscovered hits territory, There seems to be plenty of good, and very little fantastic. But I hold steadfast that someone can reach everyone with a song that cuts through to the soul groove.

I'd agree that a fantastic tune can rise above its competition--but it still has to get heard. Good quality simply means that more people who hear it will tell more people, increasing the likelihood that someone will hear it who is in a position to do something with it that will make money.

One of the frustrating limitations of the Web is it's not really listened to much by people who are in those "I can make money with this" positions. And without that, you've got a classic instance of the Bishop Berkeley Syndrome--if a tree falls and nobody hears it, did it really make a sound?

I've been a judge for the last couple of JPF Music Awards and I can definitely say that some of the best tunes I've ever heard, I've heard from judging the finalists... and I've never heard the songs or the artists since ... they never blipped through the wall of white noise created by the mass media machines

So, I know for a fact that there are masterpieces out there that will never get attention. It's a shame.

Thanks for responding! I must say that there are a few really good songs from the JPF winners! However, I personally have not heard the material IMO that could breakthrough the white noise. But I do know that it is coming some day, and we will all know when it gets here!

There are great songs and there are hits. They are not always the same.

My mom made amazing pancakes, better than any I've ever had at a restuarant. Now, why aren't the world's best pancakes also the world's most popular? That's what the music business is like. The strength of my Mom's pancakes didn't lift them from the obscurity of our breakfast table, and believe me, if you could have tasted them, you'd have known they were the best.

Now, if Mama would have wanted to open a chain of pancake resturants, she'd have had one component...great pancakes...but that would have only been a start. It's the same with music. A fantastic song is a good start. A truly great song is a great start. A poor song may not even get started. Which has the better chance of winning?

Analogy songs to pancakes, you are right though. But a great songs begs to be "heard and shared" so I think they have a chance yet of capturing the public imagination.. if they weren't shoved into a closet indefinitely.

It is a noisy world with so many screaming for attention, no recognition that we may have became numb to what is something and what is nothing.
