I have come up with a made-up word which is excellent for my own musical act and which is quite catchy. I bought it as a domain name, and would now like to copyright it or whatever, to help insure that someone cannot see it and then use it as a band name, CD title, etc. Is copyrighting what I need to do? Thanks

Short answer: trademark/service mark. Long answer: From the uspto.gov website: "Trademarks include any word, name, symbol, or device, or any combination, used, or intended to be used in commerce to identify and distinguish the goods of one manufacturer or seller from goods manufactured or sold by others, and to indicate the source of the goods. Service marks include any word, name, symbol, device, or any combination, used, or intended to be used, in commerce, to identify and distinguish the services of one provider from services provided by others, and to indicate the source of the services. Copyrights protect literary, artistic, and musical works." I don't think a single word can be classified as a "literary work" Trademark is used for a name that identifies "goods" e.g. a CD. Service mark is used for "services" e.g. live concerts. If you want to protect both uses you'll have to pay extra. I've done this so if you have questions feel free to ask. Oh, and here's my first post. Hello! -bill ------------------ http://www.heuristicsinc.com
