i've been sifting through these forums. they're really a great resource and i've decided that the best route for my music is to seek out a publisher. i've just released an album and i'm playing here and there. i find booking difficult. some of my favorite artists have cds in every store, thousands of dollars promoting them, and only fill small to mid-size venues. my music is very similar. its just a relaxed pop that is hard to build a following with, but is very attractive to the industry if the songwriting is good. i'm still going to try to build a fan base locally (Atlanta), but I think my most likely route to success is to pursue a publisher. eventually i would like to be a performing artist, but i would be more than happy entering the industry as a songwriter.

where should i seek a publisher for a relaxed, sunny-feeling, pop music? my inclination is to start with california. or if i can't get out there for a few months, is it worth pursuing a publisher in atlanta, GA or nashville, TN, or should i hold out for CA. should i look to moving to CA or is it enough to make appointments with some publishers and go there for a week or so? to anyone who has met with a publisher, or to any publisher who might respond, any advise? anything i should remember going in?

Hi All,
If you belong to a PRO, ASCAP, BMI,etc., I would start in Nashville as it is "Just Up the Road". I would set up an appointment with my Pro and take some songs for him to listen to. He may be able to set you up some meetings with some Publshers that work with your type of material. It is somewhat difficult to get in to see Publishers, even the small ones by making cold calls. Good luck.

ray is right on... grab that cd and your guitar and get yourself to nashville... the connections for everywhere else are there too.
i listened to your stuff and man you got it going on. really impressed with your writing style and take this as a compliment, you remind me of a young michael franks... awesome background band too! your dad did you proud... great roots to grow up with!
keep on rockin',

thanks chevy. i think you guys are right. one thing i've learned about BMI Atlanta though is that the songwriting reps don't want to meet with new-comers. this could be a whole topic by itself. i wasn't able to get an appointment with one but they did allow me to send a cd and they told me they'd give it a listen.
i met with a BMI rep a few years ago and brought some music in. i did this b/c an article in the songwriter's market told me to do so. but the woman at BMI spent the whole time talking about how BMI isn't there to get people record deals and such. we didn't listen to the music but i was able to leave it with her. she said she might get around to it but she had a lot of other stuff to listen to first. one thing she did tell me to do was go out and get the songwriter's market book and follow the advise in there. ironic.
so i'm somewhat doubtful right now if anything will happen through BMI, where I'm a member. hopefully I can get some publishers' attention in Nashville by sending emails and making calls. chevy thanks again for the nice things said. I think your right; I do need to get up to Nashville.
