1st, sorry 'bout the "screen name"...Thought I could change it after registering-- I know this is long-winded, and I don't drop names here other than to show I'm not completely stupid about the Biz,but was certainly too young & dumb to take advantage of these connections when I had the chance-- My question is about being a non-player(also don't read music, though familiar w/ the Number system in Nashville). I write with the melody & music complete in my head & can say & explain pretty much what I want in the breaks, etc.---How much should I pay per cut? If an artist I meet through the boards (I see a few on lyric forum 3 I might want to talk to) has interest in maybe demoing it on their disc, which also benefits me in getting a demo to pitch to a publisher, I would surely pay to defray cost of recording & production, but if they merely flesh out musically the song straight up--Would I expected to give up any writing credit? I understand if we begin to change basic elements of style, etc. it at that point becomes "writing" collaboration. This may sound like a simple question, but I'm confused because of an experience in Nashville---Mid-90's...A buddy had written two songs, & had somehow gotten 4 hrs. of time @ Masterfonix. He was also looking for an artist deal---was cutting his 2 & a song by (sp?)Fagin, who I believe wrote or co-wrote "U.S. Male", "Be My Baby Tonight", and "Sold". (Hope the name's right, only met him briefly...Was excited @ the time 'cause Garth was rumored to be considering a cover of US Male on the box set). 5 players were paid $50 per cut, the 6th played keys & I think got another $25 per for pretty much directing the band...I wish could ask this of the people involved, but have lost the connections(GOD, I was young & stupid--I would KILL to go back in time now that I'm really looking to do something in this Biz!). On Fagin's song, they used his demo, I believe the name was "Miss Mississippi"...On my friend's ballad, it was straight, keeping his melody...the third was an up-tempo # I thought just kind of laid there, in my opinion--However, the piano player & the rest, while keeping the 'melody' came up w/ a bridge & a breakdown that really made it a pretty good tune...Yet, everyone still got the same pay, & as far as I know, no "writing" credit was given...These were solid players, too: L. Womack's steel & fiddle,Strait's drummer, but everyone was friends w/ either my guy or the key player--Is this "business as usual"? I'm just looking for some kind of guide. If interested, there's a few posts of mine on "Lyric 3"...Thanks for the time reading this, and I appreciate any information...Al in Florida

Hi Al, There are demo services that will demo a song and you own it all. If your lyrics are incomplete you may need to find a Co-writer. If you can sing your song even into a boom box and make a rough tape of a song that is all you need for a demo service to make a pro demo. There are all sorts of demo services out there that charge all kinds of prices from about $19.00 up. There is, or was a demo service in Holly Hill, Fl., not far from you, B.J,S Demo services. You can also check out http://www.eyeball-records.com who does a good demo. Also http://eastcraftdemos.com Good luck.

Thanks much Ray--I can sing well enough for my demos; My biggest concern is not getting "taken", So appreciate you pointing so a reputable company--It may be a little "cookie cutter" sounding, but I'd at least another step, I guess...another question--How much time should I be plan to spend in Nashville?--My expenses would mostly be travel, as I have friends there...How do you know when to "Make the Move"?

Al, You may want to call my Publisher and ask your questions. He will give you straight info. His Ph. No. is at the bottem of the Web Site he just set up. www.fiverosesmusic.com. The Sound Files have yet to be posted but the Web Site is up. There have been Artists that have done a 2 song recording in Nashville for a ton of money. Not recommended. He will be glad to talk to you.

Thx again, Ray--I'm trying to get some "rough" demos together first, but I'll probably take you up on that...Al
