Hey Folks!
I have what might seem to many of you folks here a very elementary inquiry. Well, here goes...
There are several cover songs I would like to make a demo CD with. How does one go about it? Do I need permission from any particular party(ies) regarding "recording" these songs on a demo? Can anyone provide me with the particulars or refer me to previous posts on this topic?
Thanks!

Hi, If you're putting together songs for a vocal demo type thing to try to get studio work, it shouldn't be a problem. On the other hand, if you were going to be selling CD's, then it would be a problem. Hope this helps. -Danny ------------------ ---------------------- Danny Arena/Sara Light www.SongU.comSongwriting Courses Online

On a separate note, you shouldn't be doing covers on a demo. Not ever. Not because it's against the law but because, odds are, your demo will most likely pale compared to the original version. If the purpose of your demo is to pitch yourself as an artist you should seek out original material

BB</font> Thanks, BB, for your suggestion. I never looked at it from that perspective. I have an acquaintance who has a CD of jazz/swing "standards" in distribution. There are several songs on the CD that I like very much. However, there are a few which (I think) are nowhere near the original or later versions. However, she is doing quite well with sales. What's your take on this ? Dolly

Well, I guess it depends on the style of music you are doing. For example, my dad sings in a Barbershop Quartet and they sell their CDs at live shows. A BB shop quartet is not going to sing originals... they're going to sing standards. I guess the same would hold true for certain types of jazz -- one might expect them to do standards as well.
But if you are singing country, rock, or pop it is always a good idea to demo original material. It still comes back to your expected outcome of the demo. Are you looking to be signed as an artist? Do you want to sell the CD yourself? My opinion is -- and I could be wrong -- if you are pitching your demo to records labels, you should find originals.
