My husband and I are new to the business end of the music scene. We've been playing coffeehouses and churches for 2 years and are in the studio about to complete our first CD. We have a band with us as the core members and primary writers play contmporary/alt/folk origional Christian music and we need to understand publishing/label 101 aspects. Here are our main questions:
1. Do we need to incorporate the band and if so how/where do we get info?
2. Do we need a publisher or label behind us to market? (I read one response about someone who had formed their own label - is this a good idea and how is it done?)
3. Should joining a performing arts group (i.e. ASCAP/SESAC) be a high priority and what can they do for us?
4. Are there any other things we should know that we haven't covered?

Steeplechaser, I'll be happy to help you out, but the answers to your questions go way beyond the scope of this forum and it would be better for us to talk in person. Visit www.indiebiz.com and let's set up a phone consultation. dave @ kathode ray

Not to interfere but....
it's always a shame when these discussions are taken "off line" from the forum. I would have thought that the issues raised by Steeplechaser are entirely within (if not the very essence) of this forum. These places are about sharing information.
Please have your discussion right here where we can all benefit from and respond to it...
...I'll but out now!
Simon

Simon,
I agree. The point of forums is the exchange of info for everyone to learn from. David provides consulting services as his vocation, so I understand his desire to form a one on one relationship, which is logical, but in general, we'd love to have folks share info on here directly as much as possible. Just like they said in grade school, if one person has a question, you can be sure many others have the same one but are afraid to ask.
