Folks,
When one signs on with a publisher, is it normal practice for the publisher to re-copyright the material even if the original copyright was filed by the writer previously?

Hey DAC, they will re-copyright it in order to show them as the publisher on the PA form. However in some cases (particularly single-song contracts with reversion clause) the publisher will hold off re-copyrighting the song until there's something concrete happening like a hold or a cut.
If the publisher can't get a cut and reverses the rights back to you, it's a hassle and extra work to clear the new copyright.

To get a clearer picture of copyright registration you may want to go to the Copyright Website and download and print out the standard PA form and the instructions. The instructions state that as a general rule only one basic copyright registration can be made for the same version of a particular work. The form only has spaces for the Author(s) so I would suspect that a publisher would not be able to do a registration on songs they sign. They may ask for proof from the songwriter of registration and I have signed one publishing contract that asked for the PAU number that is assigned by the copyright office when a song or songs are registered. The one registration by the songwriter is all that is needed to prove a date of creation if a case if infringment comes up.

Sorry Ray is correct, I got confused with the PRO registration.. However, on the PA there is a section on line 3b in which you add the publishing info (date & nation).
