When someone record your song, how many copies are they suppose to give you?Is this required by law? What if they record more than one of your songs on the same recording?

Hi All, The Songwriter's Guild Publishing Contract requires 6 copys of the recording for the songwriter. I haven't read any information concerning this subject in any of the many information pages on the Net. The Publisher I work with requires 1 copy of a release for each songwriter and 1 copy for the publisher. If a future license is issued no extra copy's are required as long as no changes are made in the release. If cosmetic changes, such as a new cover are used then copys of the new product are required for each songwriter and publisher.

My only experience was within a private treaty deal and I got one free copy of the finished CD and a copy of the full backing tracks to all of the seven songs I wrote on the Cd in both audio and seperate wav form so I could use edit tracks out to use in not quite live performance, or in the case of me altering the lyric and wanting to record an update demo. Would imagine those sort of things would be open to agreement twix the parties as all things in a contract are. Post should give us a good cross section of stats for us to know what is a reasonable thing to go for. Graham ------------------ http://www.soundclick.com/bands/2/grahamhendersonmusic.htm

Apart from the common courtesy involved, it really is worth tracking down any releases you might know of (maybe even buy them if necessary). I have occasionally come across errors in the credits. I immediately shoot off a (polite) letter to the record co., publisher and PRO notifying them of the error and how it should be rectified. The PRO in particular is important, as they often share files with their sister organisations. If the basic registration is dodgy, this error will be multiplied across the world. In my experience, outside songwriters are nobody's priority. So you largely have to look out for yourself in matters like this.
