Man, some of you guys are seriously decked out! I posted something more appropriate to this topic on the songwriter forum - duh! Anyway, I am still struggling with my piece of crap VS840. I shouldn't say that - it's better than nothing, but it is definitely weak.

Here is a cheap item that I am so glad I bought - a BBE Sonic Maximizer. I wasn't really sure what it did, but I bought it anyway because it was on sale for less than $40.00. It really does make a big difference in the sound. Makes EVERYTHING sound better. Best $40.00 I ever spent.

My studio is my son's bedroom - I took a shovel and cleared a space in the piles of Power Rangers and Spidermen (Spidermans??)and MegaZoids and stuck in my mic stand and recorder. I sit on the bed and play. It is the least trafficed area in the house. Mainly all I have to deal with beagle barks and telephones ringing.

Man, I would really love to get one of those self contained 16 trackers with the built in CD burners. Man,they are cool BDK

I'm using:

Tascam 788w/CDRW788
Midi verb
ART SGX Guitar Preamp
Beyer dynamic Handheld mic
Korg O1/W
Ibanez S Series Electric Guitar
Yamaha Acoustic Guitar
ESP Bass Guitar

Not fancy, but gets the job done!

God bless,
Gina

Time to let the cat out of the bag, eh? OK...

For the past 2+ years, I've been recording on a computer based system. I've been living and working in the Middle East for the last 4 years, so getting new or updated equipment has been slow. Finally though, I'm moving back home to the states in May!

Computer:
P11 350mhz 128ram ide 20 gig hd for audio with a 6 gig system disk

Software is Calkwalk PA9.03, Soundforge 5.0 (the new version) and Antares Autotune (which is a must with a voice like mine!) I use the assorted plug-ins from these packages.

EMU APS 16bit sound card for the midi stuff (drums, bass, keys etc...) with the packaged stock soundfont samples, and recently got a Delta 1010 24bit 8 in/out card for the audio.

Joe Meek VC3 mic pre (ok for guitar, but not vocals, although it's all I have for vox)
Mics:
Shure SM58, AKG C1000S, Studio Projects C1

For electric guitar a Line6 POD.
I use a Guild acoustic and a 14 yr old junk Squire Tele copy that has pitted frets and won't tune up that I bought over here for a hundred bucks.

I mix through Alesis M1 active studio monitors.

It's a native system with mixing and mastering accomplished via the software.

NOW....waiting in the wings when I return back home! I've already bought and built a new hot rod PC, Athlon AMD 1500+ with half gig of double data rate memory and two 40 gig hd's. I apparantely have a mem problem because the system continually crashes. So that has to be fixed first upon my return.

I just bought a Buzz Audio mic pre off Ebay last week and had it shipped home. It's little known as they are made by a small company in New Zealand but a very high quality mic pre. I can't WAIT to hear this thing!

With the new power PC working, I'll junk the EMU soundfont stuff and go to higher quality software samplers like gigsampler etc... for the midi stuff.

I'm also scraping the Tele copy junk guitar because I have a 75 strat back home to handle all the electric guitar stuff!

I'm real anxious to hear how these new items will improve the sonic quality of my recordings. I have to admit, I've amazed myself and many others with the sound quality I am currently getting with the mediocre low end equipment I have.

If you wanna hear some of my music you can check it out at the link below.

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/chrisdasch_music.htm

Or here's some older songs at

http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/197/chris_dasch.html

Thanks,

Chris

Good tunes, nice job.

I've heard good things about that Buzz Audio mic pre, though they ought to do something about the name [Linked Image]

I bet you're looking forward to getting home and throwing your arms around your new computer (and maybe a person or two).

Hi Pat,

Thanks for listening to my tunes. Appreciate that a bunch! Yeah, the Buzz org should really consider that name change.:-) From what I've heard though, there's no buzzes or rattles in this piece of gear. I got an exceptional deal on the thing. I would have never been able to afford such a high end pre otherwise. Really lookin' forward to testing it out.

And you're right, my arms will be VERY busy wrapping things up when I get back home!

Chris

Hi, Pat!
Well I got more ram and some more stuff. I had to take out a loan to do it .

This is how my home studio looks now.
iMac 400 DV 320 SDRAM, 10 gig harddrive.
USB Midisport 1X1
GR 33 guitar synthesizer
Roland midi ready Strat guitar
Tascam Portastudio 414 mk II
Sure Beta 58A
Finale 2001d
Cubase VST 2.0 (supposed to come tomorrow, I wanted the bigger one but too pricey)
an Aiwa stereo CD/cassette (low end and not that good as a mix down recorder but I was told I can mix into my computer so I am not going to worry about that. Speakers sound good enough.)

Anyway, I still need to get a firewire external RW CD burner. I want it to be able to make regular CDs and RW CDs. I need a good one that is cost effective. Any suggestions?

JeanB

I did a Google search and found this page:
http://www.pricewatch.com/1/210/3584-1.htm
It's a list of CDRW drives, how much they cost and where to order them. If you have a spare USB port, you might consider getting a USB CD burner and save that Firewire port for the second hard drive you may find you need in the future.

I'm at work; gotta go.

Jean

I have been running a SCSI Yamaha CD-RW on my Mac for several years and have not had a single problem with it. I consider it to be the most stable piece of hardware I have ever owned. I know Yamaa makes them in Firewire and are typically highly rated. Now, I have not had to look for over a year, but on my last search, found Plextor stuff highly rated as well. Happy shopping.
