Great site. There's a lot of knowledgable people on board here...but alas, I'm not one of them, so I would appreciate some sound advice. I've been a musician for many years, but only recently have come into my own in songwriting. I'm compiling a lot of songs, but have no recording equipment. What are some of the ways you guys tackle this problem? Even if I collaborate online w/ someone, won't I still need to be able to transmit/email recordings of my music? If so, what types of equipment are necessary just for the essentials? Thanks for any input.

Hey S.C.A.T.: You may get more focused (and more useful) responses if you tell us a little about what you want to record. Vocals and acoustic guitar? MIDI keyboard arrangements? Multiple instruments (what kind)? Something else? Also, and this is not a stupid question, do you have your own computer at home or do you log on from somewhere else (library, internet cafe, work ) Scott [This message has been edited by scott59 (edited 06-02-2006).]

There are several ways to do it. Back in December of 1995 I was using an old AKAI Reel to Reel recorder to record my work tapes. Just Guitar and me singing them. The AKAI quit recording so I purchased a TASCAM 4 track cassette recorder of which I still use. the Musician's Friend Catalog still has cassette 4 tracks if you want to go that way. There are also a multitude of hard drive recorders from about $249.00 and up.
I usually have the worst of my work tapes done by a PRO Demo Service. I now have a CD recorder to make copys to submit to contacts. A lot to organize if you are just starting to prepare to submit songs. Good luck.

Hi. I recently bought a Logitech microphone for my computer and downloaded a program called "Audacity" and was able to record my rough draft and convert it to a mp3(audacity does this) and email it to my co-writer. It was super simple and a great tool for collaborating. My co-writer was then able to record her changes and email them back to me. Its a wonderful thing! Oh, and the cost was $20 for the microphone. Also, when I am ready to submit to my producer, I just email to him. This is what I call a good "kiss"..which stands for "keep it simple stupid" [This message has been edited by dutchessdnn (edited 06-03-2006).] [This message has been edited by dutchessdnn (edited 06-03-2006).]

I would go with a Pro tools Mbox you'll be digging it and recording the first day. Plus you'll be working in a system where the sky is the limit for future gear and you'll already know the system.I started with an mbox and now we have the digi002 system but i keep the mbox at home to write on and the 002 at the studio for the band.. All the best... Moker

Thanks for your advice, guys. All of it good, I'm sure. Being the cheapskate that I am, I decided to go Dutchess' route. I'm a KISS kind of person, too. If things progress, I might invest more. Thanks again.
