I'd like to find some songwriting contests for neo-folk writers (in case, this post's subject didn't get that point across). I feel that most songwriting competitions tend to focus on well-established, mainstream genres, and this gives me a disadvantage due to my writing. Either that or I'm sublimating my despair at not having won the one contest I've entered so far, and I'm providing excuses for future contests I may not win. Scapegoating, they call it. Anyway, does anyone have any leads on such songwriting contests? Throw a message my way. - Alan Hague www.myspace.com/alanhague jlmp84@yahoo.com

I second that! I write in a pretty old-fashioned style, so those contemporary contests do do much for me. Cheers ------------------ Fred ================ www.fredstunebook.blogspot.com

Alan, be not discouraged. You just need (in my opinion) to find the right contest(s) to target. Most contests (though not all), as you'll hear elsewhere on these boards, are run to generate income for the contest-runners, not to reward talent. And what exactly is "neo-folk"? Neo Folk? I think I saw that in the store between techno-yodeling and acid-polka. ;-)
Actually it does sound intriqueing. Will give a listen if I can get myspace to play it or download it for me.

Neo means new, so it has to be new folk. Is that the one where they added a fourth chord and expect you to be able to sing? All jokes aside, I would think any comp that had a folk section would be able to accomatate you. unless you are pre-neo-folk even and so have to be a groundbreaker. Best of luck with your search. hahaha, nice responses. I guess what I call "neo-folk" is kind of an amalgamation of genres that goes beyond what would fall under the traditional "folk" label. I mean, the stuff I play is acoustic and has folk roots, but it also has roots in other genres (punk, hip-hop, blues, etc.). Thelonious Monk once said that, in the end, everybody plays folk songs. It's folk played for hip-hop kids in 2006, more or less. I hope that makes sense. Thanks for the suggestions. I, too, feel that it's a matter of finding the right songwriting contests. - Alan Hague www.myspace.com/alanhague jlmp84@yahoo.com
