Hi There,

More to the point who has made a terrible re make of one of your favorite songs.

Travis Tritt, who I rate as a singer/ Song writer " I'm A Member Of A Country Club"

What a great self penned number

and then he made a terrible recording of that lovely song recorded by The Platters

"ONLY YOU"

The Only other bad one was a guy, from Nashville in the eartly nineties, Randy some one, I Believe
You know who I mean Dark Mop Of Hair dressed Like Hank, sort of Rhine Stone Cowboy Costumes , the song was "When The Devil Went Down to Georgia" after listening to the fabulous Charlie Daniels band doing the hit version, his was awfull.

Ben:

It's not the only one (in my opinion). There was a recent remake of Joni Mitchell's "Paradise" (usually known as "Big Yellow Taxi" because there are at least 2 other songs entitled "Paradise"--you know, the one that starts out, "They paved Paradise, put up a parking lot...") by a kid-rock band whose name I never bothered to learn. Thought it was *awful*.

There are some remakes that aren't bad. I never found but one I thought was better than the original done by the writer. (That was Jimi Hendrix' rendition of Dylan's "all Along the Watchtower," by the way.)

I believe this one will be hard to top: JPF member John Findlay recently posted a link to William Shatner's performance of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.

Has to be heard to be believed....

I don't think Travis Tritt wrote "Country Club." It was Catesby Jones and Dennis Lord. Lord is a bigwig at SESAC now, I think.

I would have to say that Michael Bolton's caterwauling version of "Sittin' On the Dock of the Bay" was pretty dreadful.

Big Yellow Taxi, what a classic one of those songs that has magic in the performance, No dubs needed just a take,
How many can do that now trouble is they are encouraged to drop in and over dub, One Producer had Joe Cocker doing a word per track
Did not go down well with Joe the finish song had no spontaneity.
Ben

Hendrix was the exception who could give a great song (Another Writers Song) an original flavor

Again the original was so timeless, also done in one take,

Many of the Beatles earlier songs, were done quicly , and so many of their song recordings stand up today

Some one else A Big Nashville Name did Pretty Woman, (Orbison) What For.?

I'd have to agree with Madona's pitiful version of American Pie but the one that probably peeves me the most is...

Riding With The King - A John Hiatt song recorded by BB King and Eric Clapton. They butchered a great tune IMO.

my personal favorite is Elton Johns disco version of Johnny B Goode - or John Denvers version of the same song.

Unless you count the chipmunks - their version of 'whats new pussycat' is a classic

Burton Cummings "American Woman" was redone by lenny cravetts. How can ya redo a spontaneous improvised song like that?? If the myth has any truth, Cummings was in a dressing room being molested by "?". His band starts off with that infamous riff to signal him its time to get down to business. After fourteen minutes of the repetitious riff Burton stumbles out on stage and the rest was history. lenny had a dream and a hole in his pocket...

One of the few Beatle songs I like, and I think maybe the last time they ever let Bing into a studio possibly.

What did you not like about Bing's version,
Did you even like The Beatles original version, Graham? I heard you say you did not go much on The Beatles once,

I Love The Beatles Version, The Old Groaner did a reasonable job, at least he sang on pitch, Wouldn't buy it myself but millionds did, I prefer his White Christmas Timeless. very seasonal wish I had wrote it.

Thanks. Now that I know who those folks are, I will make sure I never play one of their CDs.

A lot of the stuff on your lists sound like deliberately out-of-character matchups. Marilyn Manson performing "Sweet Dreams"? I cringe.

I suppose if I propose adding Slim Whitman's rendition of the Disney turkey, "It's a Small World After All," to the list, people will jump all over me again for having no taste, huh? I suppose I could always say that sometimes, when listening to pop music, one's sense of *smell* is more important. Taste, alas, doesn't enter into it.

Linda, It's true,Pat Boone cut an album of Heavy Metal covers done big-band style Called "In A Metal Mood",including "Crazy Train", {The Osbournes show theme song} and "Smoke On the Water" but the best is his cover of "Holy Diver" by Ronnie James Dio!and William Shatner has recorded SEVERAL albums over the years. ALL of them are hilarious! And yes ,the listenig experience is enhanced by liberal doses of acid {yes I tried it!} {I listened to William Shatner on acid, and saw GOD!!}

i'm a believer now but my esophagus hurts and my teeth are starting to show damage. didn't pat boone and others re-record cover songs because the USA was not accepting of others with hit songs other than caucasions? I once read that and I think it was Little Richard who came up with a song that no caucasion could sing. Anyone have any of those songs that sound too sugar coated? Dinah Shorish?

Because it was a very irritating noise.
Simple as that.
And the bend of the chant was no less than pathetic.
Hey Jude is one of the Beatles songs i do like.

Lordy, how could I forget:"I Will Always Love You." In Dolly Partons hands, it's a sweet, innocuous love song, In Whitney's hands, it has all the subtlety of an air-raid siren!

Ben (Somebody Remind me of that guys name , Goood guitarist though)

God bless you! I thought I was the only one who felt that way.

But 'innocuous' isn't the right word. Dolly's straight-from-the-heart writing and delivery hold much power, and I would say instead 'authentic'.

When Dolly sings it, you feel she's truly talking to YOU, and expressing genuine emotion.

When Whitney sings it, you feel she's only trying to show off her vocal pyrotechnics.

Ditto on Dolly's version.

Me & my hubby's biggest peeve is Vanilla Ice snagging the backing tracks for "Under Pressure" to use on "Ice Ice Baby."

Not exactly a remake, but...

And I am NOT clicking the Shatner link.
Bewaaaaaaaaaaaare the link.......

I dunno. I'm a Beatles nut and I rather like Shatner's version of LSD. And I'm not just being contrary. I really think it's kind of cool in a ridiculous sort of way. I'm a bit surprised people are knocking it so much.

Uummm, no comment('cause I kinda like the bodaciousness(sp?) of it too...

Has anyone seen the video?...I'm being serious here...I found it several months ago on one of those "Viral Video" Sites, where they did the whole thing in psycadellic(sp?again) glory...

It was so well done that I'm still not sure if it was original or a spoof, and danged if I can find it now...But it's out there....Find it if you dare.

As much as I love him, I don't think Tiny Tim should have ever covered Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall".

Wow. Cheers, then, enjoy!

For anyone interested--Shatner is being roasted this Sunday. I forgot the channel. We JUST got DVR so my hubby's been button-happy finding interesting things to record.

Randy Travis' version of the Beatles tune"Nowhere Man". Anything that Pat Boone covered and lets not forget to mention the dreadful slaughtering of many a classic recently covered by Barry Manilow.

I heard some last night!! "Celebrity Duets"! OH MY GOD!!! Simon Cowel just loves to let people humiliate themselves. Chris Jerico needs to stick with wrestling, Carly needs to stick to gymnastics, Cheech and Lea need to stick with acting and Randy Travis needs to stop trying to over-sing his songs.

Oh my goodness. WHERE did you find this?
Yikes. I actually clicked "listen." Only because this tiny gal from Hong Kong singing Highway to Hell pricked my curiosity.

I think if she sang things right for her voice... uh...

Oh nevermind.
wow.
That's all I can say. wow

Here's one for ya: I think Neil Sedaka's sappy, syrupy, barf-bag retread of his OWN hit, "Breaking Up is Hard to Do," is one of the worst cover recordings I have ever heard.

It's hard to imagine great music being maimed so thouroughly as what Rod Stewart has been doing the last few years. Yikes!

Truman--I could not agree more! It's painful to hear those great jazz standards butchered and dragged down. Aaaaaaagh! It's so SAD! And not in a good way!

Neil Sadaka....well, I always found myself thinking about how high his voice was, and how I originally thought I was listening to a woman sing, that I got distracted when he came on the radio. "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do" is a well-written song...did he really RE-record it??? Why?? Hmmm.
