Anybody here a member of SGA (Songwriter's Guild of America)? If so, how do you like it? It seems like a reasonably priced membership.

There was a big post about the SGA back when they were spamming our site and refused to stop or apologize. Do a search and you'll likely find the details. It's either here or the general message board I think.

Hi Brian,
Though it seems like SGA can do a lot of good things for aspiring songwriters, I don't care much for companies and organizations that spam.
Thanks for the info. I'll do a search see if the good outweighs the bad.

Brian, I found the thread. Geez my memory is really bad... After finding the thread, I realized that I had already read it when it was active. Anyway, it's a shame but as much as I would love to join, that feeling would be based on their previous history, not their recent history. I think I'll pass for the time being... thanks for reminding me, Van BTW, here's a link to the thread for anyone who sees this and would like to give it a read... http://www.justplainfolks.org/ubb/Forum2/HTML/003321.html

I agree that people should not join...I've looked on the site and people are NOT getting critiques like they are promised (or teased into believing) One member has gone so far as to publicly ask Rick for a Refund in the "Ask The President" section:
"Please Refund My Membership Fee by Patrick Anderson - Tuesday, 15 March 2005, 07:41 AM I joined this guild in January 2005, posted a song for critique on January 22, and to this day have not received even a single comment on the song. I think I have waited long enough. Since the ability to receive critiques was a major factor in my decision to join, I would like a full refund of my membership dues for the year.
~Patrick Anderson"
I looked for this guys post for critique and he STILL had zero responses!!!...Wooooow...
Another read as follows:
"Critique by Edward Williams - Wednesday, 23 March 2005, 06:46 PM Hey Rick,
I’m still trying to figure out the process of the critique forums. Some get critiqued and most get passed over. I see that you and Casey Kelly do respond to some of the posted songs, but not all and not in order of submission. I’m sure it’s time consuming, but the critique forum is really the only active portion of the whole website. What’s the deal?"
I looked around and MOST people had 1-zero responses...and Casey Kelly and Rick Carnes are the only ones critiquing...or so it seems....People have gone MONTHS with NOTHING...sooooo terrible....
I considered joining the SGA last summer..they had some cool stuff going on but the staff is totally different now...and basically nothing has happened since they left...Some event is coming up with a lot of Peermusic people involved...I did some research and Rick Carnes is a Peermusic writer...not much imagination going on anymore...
I was close to joining, now I'm glad I didn't. I've been looking at this new site since Oct. and it doesn't really change...and everything is worded kinda sketchy..."Soon to be"..."Coming soon"...it's been like that the entire time..I think most of the things you are supposed to get as a member is "soon to be" or "coming soon"....My friends who were members are really mad that the old L.A. staff is gone...not to mention the Spamming and Prez' stepson/webmaster thing...
Buyer beware....If I can save a fellow poor songwriter a few bucks.....

It looks like the SGA headquarters will be open til this friday.
Then I heard they are merging with NSAI? It seems the NSAI will be taking over the remaining existing offices in L.A. and Nashville and NY....but what about all those noncountry songwriters?
An end of an era. It was being run so poorly. Didn't ANYONE see this coming? At least ANYONE who could do something?

'I don't care much for companies and organizations that spam.'
Most probably share the same sentiment, and companies that do spam are shooting themselves in the foot.
This isn't SGA related, but what exactly is considered spam here? Don't know much about net marketing dos and donts. For example, would it be perceived of as spam if its a reply that may help or give an answer to the original poster? thanks

Any replies here would not be considered spam if they were relevant to the topic. The SGA was spamming our members by harvesting email addresses and sending solicitations for them to join.. over and over and over... they admitted openly to do that.. it's was the first of many sleazy actions taken by the president and staff and it was certainly an indicator of things to come. Lies, stealing, more lies, more ripping people off.. more sleaze.. nepotism.. wasting money.. ruining a great organization with a long and storied history. Rick should be really proud.
Sometimes people actually get what they deserve.. in this case, the staff that let this all happen (and in most cases caused it to happen by choice) got what they deserved. It's just sad they brought everyone else down with them. Very sad.
