I need to turn my handwritten song scores into lead sheets. Does anyone know of an inexpensive software program that can run on Windows 2000 and does not take a computer programmer to learn? All I want it to do is produce lead sheets with guitar chords above the lyrics.

For a guitar notation program which includes tab as well as standard, Finale Guitar is a good choice. It does a lot for 99 dollars.

But if its just a simple lead sheet, why pay anything.

They have a free app called Finale Notepad 2004. It won't print the chord directly over the notes, but you can use their text block tool and just type the chord symbols in. They just won't play back like the rest of the notes. It's free and the printed sheet music is beautiful and very professional looking.

Last year, I spent quite a bit of time looking for software that would do that too. (Jean - thanks for your help then - you posted back to me and I ended up trying to use Finale). I've had better luck though just writing my own charts in Nashville Notes (the number system). I needed piano sheet music, and although Finale did okay, some of the notes were not exactly right.

If you find some software that you like and it works better than Finale, let us know what it is.

Hi, Chris!

Finale notepad is the freebie program and has limits placed on what it can do, but if the notes are pretty basic it should be able to do what you want.

If you want to put all the speacialized guitar markings, you could get Finale Guitar. That is a good deal cheaper.

The big Finale program is different and has all the bells 'n whistles. There are different versions of the software, some simpler and priced accordingly. Finale 2004 has recently had some major upgrades to it. There are still a few bugs but it has some really neat features to it.

Sibelius is another one. Both Sibelius and Finale are available for academic pricing

Cakewalk can do it.

I think Graham has mentioned some freebie ones you can download. You may want to post an inquiry about it in the music theory forum.

What version of Finale did you get and what were you using for playback?
If you were using Quicktime 5 for internal playback, there was a conflict. Version 4.1.2 plays correctly and I've heard Quicktime 6 plays it back correctly, but not everyone can use Quicktime 6.

The new Finale version offers their own softsynth program for playback now. It sounds pretty good.

When it comes to midi files, how good the sound is depends on the soundcard of the user.

Thanks for the information and opinions/experiance regarding the different software available for creation of lead sheets.

I stumbled across Cakewalk while looking around, and their "home recording" version (I forgot the specific name) seems to do a lot, and let's one create lead sheets and print them out. At the advertised $59.00 price it seemed like a good choice. However you can't beat free, so the Finale Notepad looks like it will get the 1st try.

I actually enjoy writing things out by hand (how sick is that!), but I've always read that the publishers want lead sheets that look professional, and certainly the guys in the band can appreciate not having to read my hand writting for lyrics or sloppy looking notes.

Speaking of looking professional, I just noticed I sent my reply without spell checking. Sorry.......

Seems like I just gave an example of why I don't want it to be too computer complicated.

For just chords and lyrics, I use Hitjammer which came bundled with my copy of cakewalk Home Studio.
If I want the notes of all , or any part, I save in Cakewalk as a midi, and add a track so I can hand click the melody in if required.
Then print that off.
Haven't had to do that for a long time, as most times I only need the chords and lyric, so a bit rusty on how well it works.

I only tried the "freebie" version, but our computer has since crashed (came preloaded and we didn't have a backup disk) so we have since gotten a new computer and I'm not sure what version the old computer had.....Needless to say, I appreciated your help last year tremendously. [Linked Image] Thanks again!!!

I don't normally have a need for that type of software, I normally write my own notation and Nashville Numbers for my original stuff, but I was having trouble writing piano music (since I could not find the sheet music)to some very difficult jazz tunes. Your help (Jean) saved me a lot of time and money last year - and I couldn't have made it as a Presidential Scholar or into the Grammy Jazz Choir without it!

Microsoft Word or any number of programs that allow for SuperScript font. Put the chord in Superscript, rest of lyric is not. The chord will stuck up above the line. Or heck, you can just put the chords on a separate line unless it's a wordy song.

Thanks,
Bill

Hit jammer will do that. Not the chord shape but the chord name.
The trial copy is at www.soundtrek.com
