Without question, my fave beer is Guinness Draught. There's also some great local, microbrewed beers here in Buffalo...Flying Bison, Ellicottville Brewing Co., and of course, we have Canada right over the border...can't forget about Labatt's and Molson!!!

Though I grew up in the D.C area, my family owns a ranch in Utah with quite a few cattle. Early on, I detected a striking resemblance between cow urine and beer so I never considered drinking either - chilled or otherwise.

hahaha. Actually that's pretty funny, because that's exactly my take on beer (and I'm sure I'm not alone) when I first "discovered" it back in college. It definetly is an aquired taste. Now, I drink wierd stuff like Guiness(SP?), those dark beers....

Glad to join the cattle call. I first drank beer when no water was avaialable at also my first bluegrass festival - in a South Carolina pasture. Now I brew too so my favorite beer is ALWAYS homebrew. Knocks the rest dead usually, though you can hit a bad one aoccasionally. Goes great with bluegrass, rock, country, humming...
Cheers!

I like a good IPA or Porter Or stout or wheat beer. They make a real good one out in the southwest called :Cow urine IPA that's good also. Rogue has great beers, Slop bucket(Vermont) is tremendous. Otter creek; Yards' Sierra Nevada; Anchor Steam; Stoudt's ( PA) Flying Fish (NJ) Goose Island (Il)and many more. I am suspicious about anyone who has never touched the stuff, After all, wasn't Ben Franklin who said Beer is Gods way of saying he loves us.

Happy (burp) Holidays!!

Have to make an admission here. I'm based in Belgium, so have the world's best beers flowing round the clock. Stella is a fine lager. But you just have to try the speciality beers such as Moinette, Duvel, Hoegaarden, Rochefort. The list just goes on and on.

Yep, one thing they do better than anyone here: beer!

M
PS: Having said that, the US micro-breweries come a good second place. But we don't get them over here, unfortuantely.

Well, I don't drink beer much anymore. If I drink at all it is usually a screwdriver, but...back in the day... [Linked Image]

When I was in college I had a once a month two piece gig in a German Restuarant. Lot's of polkas, waltzes, oldies & Country [Linked Image] (I started goofing around with Van Halen's version of "Pretty Woman" one day and I think 4 people died of a heart attack - immediately went back to the Roy Orbison version [Linked Image]). We got to know the owner quite well and he turned me on to this beer. He used to serve it in a tall glass, with a lemon & a grain or two of rice. I really liked this beer. Hands down my favorite still to this day.

While in Italy, I was stunned and horrified to find that Peroni was the only beer readily available at many places. After a while, I started to like it... then I really liked it, and now I find myself looking for it here & there. It's strange... the first sip I had of the stuff was one of the worst tastes I've ever experienced.

Shandy,

When were you in Italy? Back in the war days perhaps? ; )

I've been wanting to visit Italy and Greece. In particular, I've wanted to visit Pompei since I was a little kid. That and Easter Island, which I wrote a report on in 7th grade and have always wanted to see those tall goofy statues since. Now that I have seen all of the US except ND and AK, I am ready for some Euro Roadtrips. I've visited France and Switzerland, and I'm ready to see the rest of it.

Howdy Bri...

I was in Rome & Florence for a while this summer, during the worst heat wave in the last 100 years or so. Hence the consuming of Peroni.

Anyway, when you get the chance, GO. Let me know if you do get the chance, and I'll fill you in on the "must-see" material and a few robbery prevention techniques. [Linked Image]

Murphy's isn't a bad way to go, either...

OH-- I also just sent a pre-release copy of my new disc to you... hope I made the deadline. I was hoping to be able to send in the real deal, but got hung up with graphics issues that'll keep me benched until February or so. Carry on, men...

Corey, are we related? I thought I was at the bottom of the post and was all ready to type my favorites. They go along just as yours do, except at the top of the list, I'd put Coors Light. I ain't afraid to say it either... it's smooth, light... and CHEAP! But when I've got a few extra bucks to spend, I go for Corona or Killians Red.

And Shandy, when I'm in the mood for beer and coffee at the same time, I reach for a Guinness. Was on a real Guinness kick for a while, yum!

My husband, on the other hand, NEVER gets fancy, he could have an entire brewery at his feet and he'd always go for the Keystone Light. I compare it to the likes of Falstaff, Old Style, or Schlitz. If it's all there is in the house, it has to be ice cold to get it down.

I tend to think of Guinness as a "Sandwich in a can."

Coors Light? Tink, Tink, Tink. Sometimes I don't even know who you are anymore.

Oh yah,

My favorite beer by far remains Amber Bock. Can't help it, first time I tried it, I fell in love. But, if someone offers me a beer and it tastes fine, I'll drink it. But my preference is Amber Bock.

Haha, I wish I could make over $250,000 doing a beer commercial. But maybe I will get the chance to deploy to Diego Garcia someday. I hear being deployed there is like being deployed to a permanent Corona Commercial. :-)

You know one of our members Danny O'Flaherty, who owns "Flaherty's Pub" in the French Quarter in New Orleans (say hi to him if you visit) told me that with all the beer snobbery you might hear from folks from Ireland, that in truth their favorite beer by a large margin is Budweiser. I was shocked by this statement and thought it couldn't be true. He said that they like it because it has so much fewer calories than most traditional Irish beers.

Now, he makes his living selling beers and he's from Ireland, and though I don't have any other evidence one way or the other, I wonder if he's right. Anyone able to find the top purchased brands of beer in Ireland? I am curious if he's right.

He also said that Ireland might as well be the 51st US State in the way they act and mimic the US. Very interesting. He said that you can't take the "tourist" experience as what the real natives do. So for those who have spent time there, what's the scoop?

There's the old maxim that if you grow up with mediocrity, you'll never know its bad.

That's kinda what its like with US beer. [Linked Image]

Now I won't say Canadian beer are a lot better, though they certainly are an improvement, but Writie in Brussels is absolutely dead on. The Belgians, Germans and Dutch have the best beers in the world. Period.

Not only do they have a lot of good mass produced beer, but they also have small local breweries, and beer made in monastaries to please their palates.

So to talk about the best beer in the US is kinda like asking which Captain and Tenille song you like the best [Linked Image]

Well,
It's been quite a while since I've had any beer but a couple I liked was Falstaff and Budwiser. I hear the vinyards of Europe had an excellent growing season this year so there will probably be a lot of good wines imported from Europe in years to come. A good book, nothing about Beer but the second world war, Published last year you might like to see if you can still get is WINE AND WAR. It is about the French, trying to hide their best wines from the Germans during the war An intresting read to be sure. I guess we won't be importing any French wine in the forseeable future but I suppose in time things will get back to normal. Happy Holidays Everybody.

John. I was being diplomatic about this and wouldn't say it in quite those words, but I have to agree with you.

Brian, I'm Irish and have to say that apart from the porters (Guinness and Murphy's) and the red ale Kilkenny's, Ireland had little to offer the world. The Irish and beer thing was largely down to quanity rather than variety. Having said that, a few breweries have started of late (The Dublin Brewing Co. and others). But it's hard enough getting them in Dublin, let alone in your or my local. The truth of the matter is that Ireland is just like the UK and the US in that it largely drinks pretty mediocre lager.

Wherever you might be reading this in the world: support your local micro-brewer! Their struggle is not unlike that of independent music.

M
PS: For the record, I just did an article on Belgium's Christmas beers brewed exclusively for the festive season. Last count there were over 100 (I couldn't try them all)! Anyone interested in more interesting beers should throw an eye over www.ratebeer.com.

Hi Attilla

Mack Beer is the best beer around, it's brewed in Tromsoe about 150 miles north of the artic circle in northern Norway by Mack Brewery. I believe (am not sure) it's the most northern brewery in the world and has the added benefit it's always cold.
Cheers

Newcastle Brown Ale ("The Dog"). I've been thinking about writing a beer drinking song and appreciate any input. Does anyone know of a brown ale that rivals Newcastle? If so, I would be able to do more research before starting the song!
