Here are some sure-fire ways to break up your band...any more? Date the manager. Get the songs they rejected cut by another band. Start drinking. Quit drinking. Try to sell them insurance. Give a private interview with the local paper. Suggest recording the rehearsals. Get a new hairstyle. Have photos made. The best way to break up a band? A hit record. ------------------ Mike Dunbar Music
You've got to know your limitations. I don't know what your limitations are. I found out what mine were when I was twelve. I found out that there weren't too many limitations, if I did it my way. -Johnny Cash It's only music. -niteshift Mike Dunbar Music

"Have photos made" - ain't it the truth!Thank God for Photoshop. Here's what got our guitarist evicted: - Refuse to practice, citing "I'm too good for that" - Refuse to learn material - Refuse to do shows that are more than 1 set long - Blow off photo shoot & gigs ------------------ Marian Mastrorilli mastrose@aol.com http://www.projectmercury.net

LOL...fun topic: I can't speak for these items from personal experience but these might have an effect with some band members: 1. Come out of the closet and announce you are gay 2. Come out of the closet and announce you are heterosexual -GP

Tell the band you're girlfriend/boyfriend is a)joining the band b)becoming your manager c)becoming your agent d)is thinking of going to cosmotology school and wants to practice on the band.
Tell the band you want to add tuba and banjo to their Metallica songs and won't take no for an answer

Great responses!! My favorite suggestion is the one about photos. To that I can add, "buy ANY major piece of equipment (i.e., a P.A system, etc.). I don't know if the following would break up a band, but any ONE of these would at least get the guilty INDIVIDUAL "ex-communicated": - Wear more than one hat (when the band doesn't WANT you to) and insist on at least one extra "cut" of any profits for EACH hat worn. - When packing up, setting up, tearing down, and unloading for gigs, never carry or set up anything except your own equipment. - In a surprise move, announce a new solo project "on the side" (or play with several bands at one time). - Never have time to rehearse with the rest of the band. - Come unprepared to those practices that you DO make it to. - Have a huge ego (NO amount of talent can make up for this one!). - Consistently "choke" onstage. - Be drunk (and/or obnoxious) at practice and/or at gigs. - Self-appoint yourself as band manager/booker/publicist and consistently offend club owners and media representatives--and tarnish the band's name--with your unscrupulous practices. - Do nothing to help sell cds, build a fan base or increase your show audiences, but insist on getting an equal share of all profits. - Write horrible songs and insist that the band play them; and - Insist that your untalented girlfriend/boyfriend/spouse is going to sing these monstrous songs onstage with the band. Oh, wait! I'm sorry! This isn't a response to the posting--it's a FLASHBACK!! (insert nightmarish scream here...)

Yes, I'm having flashbacks too <shudder>! Here's more: -Insist on playing keyboards on acoustic folk tune, citing "it will suck without me" -Search for correct keyboard patch during the song, onstage, and find it 3/4 of the way thru -Refuse to play on "crappy" songs -Show up at rehearsal up to 2 hrs late without apology -Play out using charts and STILL mess up -Complain about audience turnout, without EVER bringing audience in (besides wife & 4 small children) ------------------ Marian Mastrorilli mastrose@aol.com http://www.projectmercury.net

starting out as an original act, try to decide a cover to play.
I was thinking Neil Young and the other guy was thinking Third Eye Blind. That band didn't last too long!

Play at our Featured Band Showcase in Indianapolis in the summer of 2001. Nearly every full band that played there broke up within the next 12 months. = )
Actually.. quite a few bands I've seen live that blew me away have had a short lifespan. I can only imagine the great music that the world has lost because a lot of petty issues broke creative groups apart. Sure, we all know about the obvious bands like the Beatles.. but what about the bands who never got mass exposure but had the creative talent to change the musical landscape. Food for thought.. I have seen so many talented folks that little to no one will ever hear..

This string has been quite funny -thanks for all the postings. Now how about we do something constructive, like set up a new posting titled "Ways to keep a band together"????
I'm sure we've learned from our mistakes, and can offer advice from our experiences...
Also, my apologies to Yoko from my earlier comment - I know it wasn't really your fault, even thought the media wanted to blame you.

Mike, I have tried most of those ways, and they do work. (Never could get Yoko Ono toi join the band, though.) Most effective one, however, is the Hit Record. The Dodson Drifters broke up within months of getting airplay of our first hit song. And yes, Brian, it does make you wonder what we could've done. 25 years later, with the bass player and lead guitarist both dead (of non-headline-generating natural causes, alas--and they tried so hard), people still remember 'em--and that hit single is still getting played and requested. priceless! bob this is some very true and funny s&%&t!! i think we can all see ourselves in one situation or another! i think helping move the gear is the most important. after i'm done with my bass stuff. i always help the drummer and with the pa system. i think this extra effort allows me a certain amount of bad notes (or clams , as we say in fla.) and keeps me in the fold.. barn. ------------------ www.barkinbarney.com

All of these have worked for various bands I have been part of in a past life:
Fail to discourage one of the band members from getting married to somebody who doesn't want him to play out
Insist that the band start doing a song that you wrote because you like it even though the rest of the band doesn't
Suggest changing the band name to "Your Name Here" and the "Prior Band Name Here" because you're really the one everbody comes to see
Decide that everybody should buy the same expensive outfit and dress alike
Late at night, after a gig, when everyone is worn out and the band goes out for breakfast, start having an "honesty" session and ask everyone in the band to speak about how they really feel about the band

Have weekly practices that often get cancelled and two of the band members rarely are available for the gigs. Too busy to play! When scheduled rehearsals happen, having to go over the same songs because a few people are not doing their home work. The weird thing is that I keep hearing this I want to move forward in music. How? In the "meet and greet" after the performance, be the lead singer that insists that everything was your idea, even though the band arranged the songs for you. Be sure not to give credit where credit is due. Thank the band for helping "you" to sound great. Ugh! LOL - James ------------------ You can really only please one songwriter at a time. Line up high paying gigs in Las Vagas and have the bass player cancel without discussing it with the band, because his wife doesn't trust him on the road!!!!

Rehearse each song on the set list, as they come up, in high speed with another band member , at live gigs.......!!!!!!!! Totally stop playing in the middle of songs at gigs, cuz you are completely clueless from not doing your homework (YES AGAIN) Or continue to keep playing all the wrong chords or notes even though you know you are totally lost( from not doing your homework ) Sue Lainey

Sure fire ways to break up the band:
Show up at the gig and announce your new stage name...Georgie Gorgeous.
Be seen smoking a joint in the parking lot by the venue manager.
Drink an entire six pack while you're setting up for the gig...as the venue manager watches.
Pull a pistol out and start waving it around as the venue manager quietly mentions to turn the volume down.
Join the musicians' union.
Tell the band THEY need to join the union.
Call the union and mention that all the band members are behind in their dues.
Pull out your pistol and start waving it around when a union board member shows up at the gig to see what's going on.
Show up at rehearsal with your instrument wrapped up in a mover's quilt.

To keep the band together? ho...ho...ho... I really did this in Atlanta in the early 70's. A union board member came down to the club to check on back dues of the lead guitarist. So, the next day, I made an anonomous phone call to the union hall and expressed my concern about the board member showing up the night before at the club, intoxicated and waving a gun in all the band member's faces while trying to collect dues. It worked. We stayed together for some time after that, and the board member was restricted from ever coming to that club again.

Change The Programme without them knowing No Beer on stage Insist, everyone wears suits and ties.
I played In My Two Sons band, Only because I had a driving licence, and owned all the gear, I sacked myself eventually. Formed my own band and now they play in mine as well as their’s.
We have had fights on stage, and we still never broke up.

Show up at practice to find out all YOUR equipment has been loaned out to another band that the bass player just happens to be friends with.
Remove several tubes from the same bass players amp and refuse to give them back until he gets your stuff back.

Tell the other members of the group you don't like their selection of cover tunes.
Let the other band members tell you they don't like your originals.
Tell your band members that you get an extra cut because the songs are mostly yours.
Tell your bass player to call you before commiting the group to a show two days from now in another freaking state! (that burnt my biscuits)
Set up a series of "solo" gigs at local coffee shops and bars.

I've noticed in the past 10 years that rather than big famous bands breaking up.. they simply disappear altogether.
So which is more likely to happen to a band with a hit radio song: Break Up or Disappear?

Hi I guess it's kinda the same thing break up or disappear, I know what you mean.. the difference is no one is big enough anymore to make it an announcementThe only band that would make the news would be Hmmm! Okay "U2" Perhaps "Radio Head" and now maybe even The Foo Fighters That used to be a big deal with supergroups, It almost like free agency and sports. No teams stat together anymore and in music no bands make seven albums or more anymore. With many young rock/popYou come up with a hit record.... you tour, then you cool down, and for some reason it seems to take longer now but you make a second record maybe in about 2 years. The band "American Rejects" had a hit in 2003 they disappeared and resurfaced with a follow up hit "Move Along" maybe 2005 or even 2006 I'm not sure. Bands and solo artists really come and go fast theses days. Were I live Hip Hop & Rap rule te music business and all the kids lives 80% The labels treat many artists especiall bands like Rap in & out next please. U2 is the last of the line connecting back.... The Stones don't count

In L.A. -> insist on being paid for shows. Sooner or later the band is going to get tired of being stuck in the garage.
Or you might print business cards... a sure killer of whoever is the contact on the card. If you're a solo act it will cause you to move and change your phone number within 6 weeks.

Call yourself an eclectic in a loud rock act and state that even the light can be seen in a synth pop act. Now that is sacraligious. But hair metal, as fun as it was, began being like the pussy assed pop bands they accused the soft acts of being. Posing and coming across like AWA wrestlers and brought on the alt scene in doing so. And the ones called pussy assed pop were the ones that seemed to be the hardest working. A mean guitar does'nt mean non-compromising. Even though I like guitar rock.

One sure way is to call a band rehearsal. It worked fine for us many times. Another way is to take a booking and forget to tell anyone. That usually works. My favourite is to go professional. Give it a week and you have at least two members leaving.

I am a new guy my name is Rick ... here is how I find myself here! Hi Mike Dunbar ... while researching my old LPs I happened to find you here. The LP is REDHEAD and it is on Legend records... seems it is signed by Elisabeth Chesley to jane Norris Pryor and william james Kovanda. When I find old privately pressed records like this I like to learn more about the people who created them! Is the rest of the band still around? There is no date on the LP... when was it released? P.S. I am listening to it now and it really is quite good. (they recognize the wagon of the medicine show). Nice vocals. Thanks Rick Whitehurst http://bakullama.com

Hi Rick,
Amazing, I didn't know there were any of those still floating around. We released it in 1976. Legend Records was owned by Bob Gibson (google him sometime, quite an incredible character) and Ray Tate, director of the Old Town School of Folk Music. Betsy Redhed and I were the lead singers.
"The Medicine Show" from that album, is a song of mine, written as a teenager. WLS radio played that version in rotation for a while. WGN radio used to play that and "Lady Be Good." WFMT radio's Midnight Special, played the whole album.
The mandolin on "Lady Be Good" and "Corinna, Corinna" is played by the late, great Jethro Burns, of Homer and Jethro.
Betsy Redhed is still singing in the Chicago area, Norm Siegel is putting together a Steve Goodman tribute show, Rich Clark moved back to Portland, Oregon and dissappeared, Kevin Dooley's mom and dad found me at a fair in Indianapolis and said he's still playing drums. Mike Smith played some guitar on that album, he wrote "Crazy Mary" recorded by David Alan Coe and "The Dutchman" which is on that album and was also recorded by Steve Goodman.
When we had the record release party at the Earl of Old Town, Steve Goodman came in and played telecaster with us, he rocked all night.
Ray Tate moved to Texas where he taught high school, and I understand now he's in Europe. Lee Cupp who sang on "Bad Girls" retired from piloting 727's and is now residing in Carbondale, Illinois. That, if I recall correctly, is everyone. We had a good time with that band, got named "Best Country Band" by the Chicago Scene the year that album came out.
I don't know Elisabeth Chesley, Jane Norris Pryor, or William James Kovanda.
Myself, I'm no longer a Redhead, I'm more of a white-fringed head.
Again, thanks for writing and welcome to JPF, great place here.
Mike
You've got to know your limitations. I don't know what your limitations are. I found out what mine were when I was twelve. I found out that there weren't too many limitations, if I did it my way. -Johnny Cash It's only music. -niteshift Mike Dunbar Music

Wow thats a lot of info ...Thanks. You can have the LP if you need one for old times sake. I am getting some whiteheads as well. Sad about the guy disappearing in Oregon... i was just through Oregon and saw a bunch of homeless folks there.... I'll keep it short, my wifes calling me for dinner. David allen Coe and Jethro burns are big names. It's a really good LP. Thanks Mike Rick http://bakullama.com

I'm sorry If I hi-jacked this thread... did not mean to!
One sure way to break up a band is to spend too much time together... Better just to play the music together only... then go home to family.

Tell your bandmate that you're not gonna play HIS songs anymore, just your own.
