Just wondering...Because I've noticed that if I Google myself by my real name, well, I don't exist....But if I Google 'Midnite Bob', then I'm all over the place,,,half of them being from JPFolks' Posts...& so then I started Googling other JPFr's by their 'Profile' name's..for example 'scott59' (Hi Scott, I'm using you as an example because Lucy told me to)... & I've found that about a third of the Google results were random quotes from our JPF Posts.....And they are really random samplings of our quotes... It doesn't bother me, I think,,,or maybe it does,,,I'm not sure,,,but it makes me curious about how others feel about it. Probably nothing we can do about it, but I am curious. Yeap, me & George are curious. Midnite ------------------ Satchel was right...Something is gaining on me.... www.jackcouldntmakeit.com

Hey Midnite: Interesting...... My real name is too common. Even when I use my middle initial, I get a lot of hits to other people. A bigger surprise is when I googled scott59. Most of them are someone else. Should have googled my profile name before I selected it I guess...... Unless the goal is to remain anonymous. Perhaps the best way to do that is to select a profile name that generates 2 million hits - I don't know, maybe "Britney Spears" or something like that.... Never would have occurred to me to google my profile name - thanks for the suggestion. Regards to Luce Scott P.S. Just did a random sampling. Yikes - some guy named scott59 is posting to Dr. Phil and another one (or maybe the same one) is posting to a site called "clits". Good thing I didn't choose scott69 I guess [This message has been edited by scott59 (edited 08-15-2006).]

Bob, When I google myself I guess I see all my former selves (sins) and then some "Steve West" gets all my music but "Steve Westerlund" gets... well... you'll see. That's what googling's all about. PS. FYI "Moscow Mules" rock!! ------------------ Steve West Steve's Website

Hi, Midnight Bob, I have googled myself, too! Yes...I have noticed that lots of references are from my rantings on Just Plain Folks, but I guess I am just plain fine with that... They are also from CD Baby and Songsalive... There is another Emily Sanders...she has emilysanders.com - I emailed her and we had a good laugh about it...she works in politics in Wash., D.C., and had fun telling her parents that she released a CD last year LOL One thing that helps...is to put quote marks around your name....along with a reference that has to do with your livelihood - I use "Emily Sanders - songwriter" -- so I don't get a million hits for all of the people with the same name Emily P.S. Bob...hope this post doesn't cause your brain to explode LOL ------------------ http://emilysanders.net

Yeah, I did. Lot of c**p there, from all sorts of prior incarnations. I do have the advantage of not being able to be confused with anybody else--I am the only Joe Wrabek in the U.S. (and maybe on the planet--we were not a prolific family). It was more interesting when my daughter did it, and I got her "Daddy, you're all over the Internet!" reaction. Nice when your kids realize you're famous. (She probably told her friends, too, to impress them. They already like my music--now they'll think they're listening to somebody famous.) Joe www.soundclick.com/bands/7/joewrabek_music.htm

Yes I'm guilty, I have googled myself from time to time. One of my friends told me that the more people "google" you the more it grows. Kind of like a worldwide googling chain

You guys. I haven't googled my screen name--brilliant idea. I'll go do that. [Editing message: I'm back] Well--all 2 pages were all ME. Including an old pic with my long hair (I still miss it...grown men cried when I cut it), yikes. My site's real URL includes the word "adamszoo," so Google pulled up most of my page, including stuff I deleted off the server a long time ago. Weird! I also got my daughter's Xanga page and every book review I forgot I wrote. I'm happy my site's been up a long time--when my friends Google "Linda Adams" and "author" my official site is #1 to pop up. And I have a common name if anyone does! Linda <snap snap> PS Can someone fill me in on the inside joke between you two and Lucy? Or is it a "had to be there" thing? ...Maybe I should Google for it... PPS Ha-HA! I'm still #1 with just "Linda Adams." The rest of 'em aren't me though. ------------------ ==================== Linda Adams http://www.alyssastory.com [This message has been edited by adamszoo (edited 08-16-2006).]

ahem.... my name is Vikki and (hangs head)... I have Googled myself on more than one occasion. I've actually gone from having "reults of 300 for Vikki Flawith" to having "results of 16,300 for..." so hopefully the marketing is working, LOL. Actually, I'm glad you asked cause I just did it again and found out two of the songs on my CD were played on two different Canadian radio shows. Cool! I'd never tried Googling my profile name - it would probably be confused with the bird... There is a gay porn star who comes up most of the time when i google my name. He also has the steve pierce dot com website. I discovered this the hard way when I went looking to see if I could register that site name. It has been alot of fun at work getting everyone to check out my website and sending them there. Steve

Don"t you just hate that when they mix you up with porn stars, but if they're in international spotlights, what the? I was LMAO last night about all this googling. I think I'll google myself again this morning as I checked lastnight and it was like a mile long. Hey Vikki, glad to see you've had so many "hits" and being googled so much I'm even getting it in Japan and Memphis....Sue

Steve, have you considered contacting Gay Porn Star Steve and proposing a link to each other's Websites? You know, like "HERE! Link to the Steve Pierce who is not gay and plays guitar" and "HERE! Link to Gay Porn Star Steve Pierce, who does not play guitar." Ya think? I mean, everybody wants to avoid confusion, and I keep hearing links are the most important part of marketing on the World Wide Web. Joe www.soundclick.com/bands/7/joewrabek_music.htm And what about getting a domain name for yourself like "NotTheGayPornStar dot com"? You could get a lot of curious clickers, who might stick around for the music...

Luckily for me when you google my name the first thing that comes up is my site, then the soundclick site, then the myspace. There's a JPF link further down the first page. I think I had to scroll down to page 6 before I found a link that wasn't me. I've had folks I haven't talked to in 10 years google my name and find me - so in general I think its a good thing. If I wanted to be anonymous, I wouldn't use my name when posting. ------------------ Marty my home Experience is that marvelous thing that enables you recognize a mistake when you make it again!

I google myself regularly to see how my search engine placement is doing. I use my real name Stanley Porter. Google's been a tough engine to stay placed in the top ten for me. Other search engines like Yahoo have me listed 7 times in the top ten regularly. Most of the time I appear at least once in the Google top ten. My personal website and my CD baby page show up consistently. I think googling yourself every few weeks is a great practice to see your ranking. This could indicate how well your internet promotion strategy is working. www.cdbaby.com/cd/sporter2

Well, A few years ago when I was bored I typed my last name into a Search engine. All kinds of things came up. My name is one that is well documented over the last nearly 1000 years. My ancester came across the Channel in 1066 with William the Conqueror that started the path of modern England. Ancesters were members of the House of Commons, were knighted, etc, etc. Some were there during the Long Parliment and were in the thick of the battles that settled England. Damm, that was before the Beatles. YeeHaw! I also have VERY famous cousins, that shall remain nameless that you would know instantly, but I am not famous nor want to be. But I will take a hit song.

When I google on "Howlin' Hobbit" my site comes up at the top. When I google on my birthname I get posts I made (mostly in programming forums) 15+ years ago! Yikes! Luckily I got most of the "flame wars" stuff out of my system back when online meant "dial up bbses" and "echo mail" and not the web. The moral is: When posting anywhere on these here intarwebs try to remember that they could be forever. Try not to post things that'll embarrass you later. ------------------ Howlin' HobbitGot Uke? Sue, My terminology "top ten" might be wrong but what I am referring to is the first 10 web pages listed when you conduct a search. My understanding is that the earlier your webpage appears on a search engine list the more popular that page is. For instance a person whose web page appears on page 2 of listed results is in the top 20. Page 1 results (top ten) are the most popular pages for a given search. So I usually see a webpage in which I'm located on Google's first page of results...somewhere around eighth place. I hope I was a little clearer with this post. Let me know! from http://www.dailytech.com/ Google to crack down on the misuse of its trademarked name DailyTech reported last month that Google was concerned over the use of its trademarked name in reference to general internet search. This concern was expressed after the word "google" popped up in the 11th edition of the Merriam-Webster dictionary. Now the company intends to crack down on the misuse of its name. What has Google upset is people who use phrases like "I'm going to google it" or "I just googled his name on the Internet and found what I was looking for." "We think it's important to make the distinction between using the word 'Google' to describe using Google to search the Internet and using the word 'google' to generally describe searching the Internet. It has some serious trademark issues,” said a representative for Google. An expert in the field of linguistics is sympathetic to Google's concerns in frustrations over the use of its name. Said Julie Coleman from the University of Leicester, "The prestige associated with a trademark is lost if people use it generically, so I do see Google's point. They also do lots more than just search, so maybe they're reluctant for their brand name to be restricted in this way." She goes on to say that despite Google's protests, they likely won't get very far in stopping the spread of "google" in everyday speech, "Normal people are using it in normal conversation and in writing, and they aren't likely to face legal proceedings." “Resistance is futile.” There is no way possible that Google can stop the spread of words such as “googling” or “googled” in everyday speech. It’s already deeply rooted into our subconscious just like Kleenex or Band-Aid. Google may be able to get dictionaries to properly note the origins of its trademarked name (as the Oxford English Dictionary already does), but who goes to a dictionary to look up the definition of Google? Mostly likely, they’ll just “google it” instead.
If writing ever becomes work I think I'm going to have to stop

Oh sure, just not in public, dude. Seriously, there's one issue I'm wondering if anyone has a remedy for. My name is VERY often misspelled when people do a search. Is there a way to plug in the wrong spelling so that search engines will redirect or suggest the possible correct spelling for my website, etc.? The name Tracy Kash Thomas produces multiple possibilities: Tracey Cash Thomas, etc. Anyone know? Thanks! You guys are a riot.... TKT www.cdbaby.com/tracykash2

www.cdbaby.com/tracykash2 </font> I don't know if or how you could do this - maybe someone else will weigh in. I'm tempted to suggest something wacky though: Create a web page that has every mispelling of your name that you can imagine. Put a brief message there that says "If you are looking for Tracy Kash Thomas, the musician, then click here". And then put a link to your site. If someone types in a mispelling of your name that is listed on this page, the search engine should catch it and display this page in their search results - problem is that it might not come up until page 10 or so on the list of results..... Oh yeah, title this page with something like "Tracy Kash Thomas, musician" so it comes up that way in the list of results. Good luck - I sympathize. People don't mispell my name but it is so common that its not helpful to search by it..... Scott [This message has been edited by scott59 (edited 08-17-2006).]

Scott has a worthy idea. Not wacky at all. Do it! WHEN you do it--I don't know how you run your website, but the search engines are lookin' for something called "keywords" in the "META TAGS." This is a deal in your HTML code. If you know what I'm talking about--just get into your page code type in all your misspellings into the META KEYWORD tag for each page on your site. Plus any other keywords you can think of: musician, music, guitarists, whatever describes you. If that's mumbo jumbo--then go ask your web host how to add keywords to your meta tags. They probably have a way, something you fill out online that auto-adds them, and you don't have to know code. Keywords rock--I didn't get the #1 Linda Adams slot on Google for nothin'. Linda PS When I say "Google," I mean Google. It's all I use. They should be happy people aren't Yahooing everything... I expect in 50 years or so no one will remember where it came from except the OED. And Moms will tell their kids to go google their room for their shoes. <font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">Originally posted by scott59: I don't know if or how you could do this - maybe someone else will weigh in. Sorry Linda, Never heard of any of the above. My last name is the same as my ancester who came across the channel. William probably did the Knighting himself. Hey, Google my last name and read for yourself. And look up your last name. See what comes up, or most likely not. The famous cousins I mentioned are living today. However I can say there is a Strodes College just south of London somewhere. You can read all about it on the Net. By the way, my daughter's name is Linda.

Hey Linda and Scott:
Thanks so much for the great ideas! I'll give it a shot.
