Brian,
I am only giving my opinion. I wonder who got the most votes and who got the least. If they are putting the one on that got the least votes first and then in succeding order, well you know who was up first. Last week I thought Kristian and Jarad were the weekest. Both came thru. All of them are find young citizens. They still have to sell the public after getting the deal. So far I think Chris was weak in the first part of the performance and then picked it up later in the song. To be sure there are songs that have been recorded by more than one major artist. Not all have nailed it. Sometimes it takes a few artists to record the song before it has been "finished". For instance I have heard several recordings of UNCHAINED MELODY including the first recording by Al Hibbler. So far I'm not sure anyone has "Nailed it". Picking the right song can help or hurt an Artist. I think Kristian's second week the song was wrong for her. The judges were unimpressed by Casey's rendition of GREAT BALLS OF FIRE. It didn't do much for me either.

As you know artists come and go rather quickly in the music busines. I will try to give a critique again next week. But ultimately it is the buying public that will decide.

According the USA Network website, last week Chris Young had 43% of the vote. Second was Casey with 23%. Everyone else had single digits. That's the website of course, so I am not sure if it's also the same ratio in the phone voting. But everyone I have spoken to, read comments from or seen in the media has universally supported Chris as the standout so far except for you. I am not bothered that you don't like him, more that I was just curious what it was you were seeing that I wasn't. I am still not sure based on your comments, but I am sure that others have different favorites than Chris since he got 43% of the vote so 57% of the voters liked one of the other 6 artists more. But it seems the numbers support that Chris has connected to a lot more fans than anyone else. I am the last guy to give false praise to anyone, but I really think Chris has risen above the crowd in what is an overall fine collection of talent. Clearly the screening process for Nashville Star is far better than that of American Idol. For all it's hype and numbers, AI's cast has collapsed (perhaps under the pressure.. I can't imagine how tough it is on these kids.. that show draws super bowl type numbers every week).

I was really happy to see Nicole perform so well again. I think she's the most polished performer in the group, but she may have some vocal limitations which she's getting the most out of, but that might be problematic down the road. She seems to be maxing out her potential every week, which is a great quality to have. Most people rarely even get close to their potential in anything.

Brian,
Can you post the link where you saw those percentage results? I hope you are not talking about the poll they have on the front page of the Nashville star site. I am curious as who the bottom two were since they said it was the closest voting yet.

Linda was reading me the percentages last night when she went on there trying to vote (she couldn't find a way to vote on line last night which was odd because I voted that way the week before). She did, however, try out the very clever Video where you insert a photo of yourself or someone else and it makes you the character in the video. Very well done and funny.

I believe the numbers were the weekly poll results. I didn't quote all the numbers because I don't think it's tied into the phone votes and all the ones at the bottom were close in score to each other. I believe the bottom two that she read off to me were the two girls including the one that was voted off and the blonde girl (not Nicole who in that poll at least was third with 9%).

I didn't think Melanie who was voted off deserved to go at all. Jared and Kristen should have gone long before her. Both are quality performers, but she was superior to them each show.

I general, I see a trend that isn't good for the women. It seems that every year I've followed the show ( Year 1, 2 and 4) the men have been dominant. It might reflect the voting base which I suspect skews toward women more than men. Even the judges are suggesting that the men may be the last 4 standing. I simply hope the most deserving artist wins.. whether it's Chris or Nicole or one of the others. As long as that happens, then the show is a big success.

Hey Brian! Sorry I didn't get back over here before now. The performance order each week is random, except for the person leaving. The producers have announced that several places - including through the administrator on the Nashville Star Message Board, so that is not my opinion, it's fact. Most people have assumed that the person going first got the most votes, but that is not necessarily true. They are not announcing anything about the voting results to the public or the contestants.

Chris is having a great time. He's excited that this week is originals, and he's hoping he didn't get voted off so that he can perform something that he wrote. The show has opened lots of doors for the people on it - I think everyone will come away with connections that will make huge differences in their career paths.

Becky,

Nice to hear from you again. I am sure that it's been crazy and exciting and probably exhausting all at once.

I am looking forward to hearing from Chris once this is all over and hopefully we can do a follow up for the newsletter about the entire experience.

Do you know what song Chris will be doing? I looked in the music awards entries and noticed Chris has never sent anything in in all these years, so I am not even familiar with what he might do. Has he never released anything?

Also, for those interested, how do people get tickets for the live show? Do they just buy them or is it a closed set?

I appreciate you following up and keeping us posted on your perspective. I'e spoken with all sorts of folks both in and out of the industry who are very impressed with Chris and I think regardless of whether he wins or not, he's really gotten a lot of peoples attention. If he doesn't win out right, do you know if he has any obligation to anyone after the show is over or is he free to sign with anyone he wants? I know in the case of Rockstar (we've been sending them folks to audition this year as well) they only have a deal with the winner, but last year 6 of the final 10 got signed to deals. I am curious what the agreement is with Nashville Star. I haven't heard from Jewels Hanson since the first week to see what's up with her.

Continued success!

Sorry Brian! I'm an accountant and working 7 days right now during Tax Season plus all the "stuff" with the show is pretty much wiping me out. I'm sure Chris will be in touch with you after the show ends regardless of the outcome. [Linked Image]

Chris has never entered anything because he decides every year that what he has (he's released two indie CDs and one short Christmas acoustic CD) is not ready. He's pretty much a perfectionist and the CDs that he did, he financed himself. Both of the regular CDs were done on a shoestring budget. His writing has also progressed A LOT in the last year or so.

He is planning to do Drinkin' Me Lonely (there is an acoustic clip available at his myspace www.myspace.com/chrisyoungmusic) on Tuesday. It's a ballad - although they were encouraged to do uptempo - because that is the song that has gotten the best crowd response over the last year.

Tickets are pretty much sold out to the shows now - although www.wsix.com is giving them away on air in Nashville, the Opryland Hotel (although fairly expensive in my book) has VIP room packages available with NS tickets. Ticketmaster releases a very small number of tickets each Friday morning - www.ticketmaster.com - the tickets are free, but there is a small handling charge. For 4 tickets, the fee is $7.53 total (not sure what that breaks down to for each or if it is just divisible by 4 for each ticket).

Chris gets some tickets each week - as do all the contestants. We've had a waiting list the last couple of weeks though, and he is trying to give them to fan club members first because we've had people coming in from other areas of the country.

Chris's friends have all been able to get in by standing in the "no ticket" line the last couple of weeks because there were empty seats. If you are from the Nashville area and won't be disappointed at not getting in, I would encourage this. A lot of times, we have extra tickets that people give us when the get there. We give these away to the "no ticket" line as soon as all Chris's supporters are taken care of, and I've seen other people do the same.

Hope that helps, and thanks again for your support. Anxious to hear your review of originals night on Tuesday. [Linked Image]

Don't forget, Nashville Star is tonight. Root on the 2 remaining JPF member in the top 6! See if Chris Young can stay on top and if Nicole Jamrose can continue to dominate the women!

It's on USA network tonight (Tuesday) at 10 pm local time but check your listings to be sure. Tonight is original song night so it should be interesting. Singing talent alone won't get you to the winners circle. So it could be anyone's show tonight to win or crash and burn.

Well, it's gettin' down to the nitty-gritty.

Jared, I thought missed the mark. My guess is he won't be performing next week.

Chris Young, What can I say. "We have a WINNA!!! WINNA here!! WINNA! Great song, although I wouldn't have minded if he did "The food group song" that's posted on his site, it's good as well.

Nicole Jamrose, not the best song of the night, but she got to sing it in front of a national audience, so i doubt she's complainin'. She has the look and the voice and like Phil said, there's plenty of writers she can work with in Nashville.

Matt, I thought his song was good, he sang well, he's still second to chris. IMO

Casey, I thought his song was better than the judges gave him credit. I would've been proud to write it. He performed better this week, I thought he would be leaving tonight, I was wrong. And he may have bought himself another week with this performance, since I see Jared as the one getting voted off next week.

I think Jared will get voted off, based only on this weeks performance. Personally, I think Jared has been stronger than Casey, throughout the entire show, but I don't think the voters care past the most recent one.

Kristen, went home which surprised me, I thought the quality of her voice might get her through a few more weeks. Wrong again. She may be a work in progress, but I think we'll see her again.

Good luck to them all.

I do wonder why the girls keep getting voted off. I think someone mentioned (Brian?) that the polls could be skewed because of the ratio of girls to guys voting. That is likely the case, i don't know.

Regards,
Justin.

Another week and another grand slam by Chris Young. There hasn't been a week in the show's history in my opinion where 1 contestant stood so far above all the others. It was literally a night and day difference on every level.

Let's start with performance:

1. Chris
2. Casey
3. Nicole
4. Matt
5. Jared

Chris was about a 9 out of 10 performance wise. Casey was probably a strong 7 along with Nicole. Matt was a weak 5 and Jared was frankly unlistenable. It was the worst performance of the entire show to date that I have seen.

Next the songs:

1. Chris
2. Jared
3. Casey
4. Matt
5. Nicole

As much as I hate to do it, Nicoles song really wasn't even a song. It was like an idea for a song that was never finished and that never had a chorus. (Where was ANY semblance of a hook Nicole?) Not only was the song weak, but it actually dragged down her performance to the worst of the season for her. Matt also had his worst performance of the entire season and the song was instantly forgettable. He sang a bad song badly. Casey's song was average. It could be better perhaps with a co-writer to take the essense of what worked and rework it. But as it stood, it was incomplete. Jared's song, though cliched and a bit tired (another redneck song?) was good enough that I could have heard Big and Rich tearing it up and making it enjoyable. Then there was Chris. I found it interesting that David Foster mentioned making people scream in the middle of a song and the fact that Chris did it twice. The energy of the audience was significantly higher that for anyone else and you could tell the girls in the audience were swooning. As a song, I thought it was clearly the strongest of the nigth without comparison. It was complete.. well arranged and well paced for the best emotional effect. I am not sure if that was the full version with the time limits, so I'd be curious to hear the entire thing. But what was clear was that it was the only pro level song of the night. The good news is that with him singing it, I think it came off perhaps even better than it really is. And that's what you want if you want to be a performer. If you can be better than a solid song, the sky is not even the limit.

I have to laugh in that Anastasia and the other male judge (dang.. totally spacing his name.. will think of it in a second probably) were slamming Chris Young both of the first two weeks but now have squarely jumped on his bandwagon, especially Anastasia. She was wrong wrong wrong the first two weeks, so I am glad she's come around to the obvious.

It will take a great injustice or a collapse of never before seen proportions for Chris not to win this. And frankly, it won't matter if he loses because he's going to get a big deal when this is over.. there's no possibility that he isn't. I hope they'll share that process with all of us here. I am guessing this will be a contract that might be a bit beyond my advice this time though! hahahah.

JPF should be very proud to have 2 of the final 5 finalists (including the lone female artist still standing) on the show. Jared should clearly be the next to go.. then I feel Nicole, Casey and Matt will battle it out for second place with Matt my odds on favorite to finish second. I found out tonight my brother in law actually knows Matt and told him last year to join JPF. If he did join, I am not aware of it. But we might actually have 3 of the top 5 still in the running.

It's over. Chris blew 'em away. Matt impressed me second most... he reminds me a tad of Merle Haggard. Nicole? C'mon girl, that was free verse, not a song.

Okay! I watched last night. [Linked Image]

The night for "originals." Hmmm....what to say? I thought most of the songs were not very good. WEAK vocal performance for everyone I thought....but ...BUT...Chris Young, my opinion, walked "away with it" last night. I have been struggling between him and Matt (and I still like Matt)..I see something "different" in Matt...but at any rate, Chris was the PRO last night. I think everyone seemed mighty nervous for one thing...that is to be "expected"...especially on playing YOUR song.. [Linked Image])

The LADIES: I am all for supporting the females out there ...at least those who I feel are "good" or can bring something different to the table. This group of ladies really disappointed me. I like Nicole, but last night was awful.. [Linked Image] I just think overall the GUYS in this show are way better than the females...and obviously, it is showing this by the votes. did I vote for Nicole? No...but I have called in and voted.

So...it wasn't a surprise to me who got kicked off last night...it was either her or Jared. I feel like Jared will be the next to go. So that will leave us with the four...for me it will be between Matt and Chris.....but ya never know.. <wink>

I am looking forward to getting the scoop after it's all over and seeing what it was like behind the scenes. It seems like in past years they had a little more footage of stuff outside of the show. Maybe they are saving that for the final couple weeks.

Hey All,
I think it is so cool we are all monitoring Nashville Star. It is amazing to me that a competition of this caliber is on Network Tv....Considering the Reality TV thang that has going on for so long now. Who has been gettin voted off surprises me every week. I couldn't wait for ORIGINAL WEEK. That is really what it comes down to. I think Chris's song was by far the best. Plus, he was not shy about putting it out there and shinin a light on it. Triple threat. Singer, Songwriter, Musician. Plus, to have such a grip, so young. Some people are born to do music. I would say, this guy is!

Chris, Your original song was fabulous and if you do not win by a large margin, I will be very surprised. Count me as a fan and a voter from the beginning, not only because you are a fellow JPF member, but, because you deserve it!! If by some weird reason you are not the winner , I cannot imagine you not being wooed and signed by a major recording company. I will be voting and buying your CDs soon. Congratulations on a wonderful God Given talent and the timing to share it with the world. Hope to hear you sing one of mine someday. Idamarie

Hey Brian! Thank you man. I appreciate all the support. Happy Easter to everybody also. I just stopped by to let you know that I have seen your posts and I appreciate them. I can't divulge much about the show right now, but I'll be happy to fill you in more when it's over for me. I'm hoping to hang around until the end, but if I don't, it has definitely generated some interest in Nashville.

I will share this - I think a lot of you know I've been a die-hard Taylor fan since I bought my first one when I was almost 18. I've gotten some Copley guitars while on the show, and the acoustic that I played last week is SWEET! I have an electric for this week's show. I really like the way they are playing and the sound. More on that later too.

Thanks again - for everything over the years too - and I'll be in touch soon.

Chris

Chris, I've been following your progress through the boards,sorry to say I've never seen the show cuz' I'm giggin'every night{I'll never apologize for THAT!] Anyway, I'm toying with the idea of entering next year{I figure what have I got to lose, and I would be the same age as Buddy Jewell when HE entered,then again I may have a rare moment of clarity, and chicken out!}I figure an "old"guy has already won Nashville Star, and a Fat guy has already won American Idol, so why not combine the two?{LOL}
Best of luck, and continued success, you've already done us proud! {as well as all the other JPFer's that entered}

Don't forget to watch Nashville Star tonight on the USA Network and root for Chris Young and Nicole Jamrose as they continue to dominate the search for the next country star!

JPF successfully help put Buddy Jewel in the winners circle the first year of Nashville Star and I think we can continue to help Chris and Nicole finish strong as well! Check them out, they're really representing all of us well!

It's on at 10PM in most US cities.. but check local listings to be sure!

Chris Fans have the opportunity to enjoy two great performances this week! The first is on Tuesday, April 18, on USA Network's Nashville Star at 9:00 PM CST/10:00 PM EST. Chris is one of 5 remaining contestants and he needs your votes to move him on to the next week in the competition. To vote by phone, watch for Chris's toll-free voting number at the end of the show. Then you may vote 10 times from each phone (home and cell phones--no pay phones). To vote online, go to http://www.usanetwork.com/index.html# after the show, register and vote 5 times per email address--but PLEASE DON'T FORGET TO VOTE! The only way he can make it to the end is if we continue to vote weekly!

The second show this week is on Thursday, April 20. This is Chris's hometown concert/benefit to be held at the Nashville Palace on McGavock Pike across from Opryland Hotel. Cover for the show is $5 per person and the fun begins at 7:00 PM with a silent auction. Lots of celebrity autographed items have been donated with all proceeds from the door and auction going to State Farm Partners to Promote Child Safety (they educate parents about child car safety and provide car seats to parents who cannot afford them). Then from 8:00 -10:00 PM Chris will take the stage with his band, the Rebel Hearts. It's going to be a fun-filled evening and the Nashville Star camera crew will be on hand to record the event--you may be on TV! Come on out and meet Chris and hear him perform with his hometown band!

Chris appreciates all you're doing to keep him on the show, so please continue to vote every week and recruit new voters!

Damn.. I wish they'd told me this before we sent the newsletter out this weekend and we could have promoted it in there and gotten a bunch more folks out to the show. That's a missed opportunity for everyone.

I noticed on the USA message boards that Chris has 50 to 1 more fans that his remaining competitors. It's dramatically more than everyone else. I think we're going to have our 2nd JPF Nashville Star Winner!

Well IMO it was the closest show of all tonight.

Matt's performance wasn't bad. I thought his performance was a bit too "peppy" for the message of the lyric. It wasn't great for me.

Casey, had a really good night. He was stronger last week than the weeks prior, and tonight I thought he was the best out of all the contestants. Last weeks performance saved him, i think. And tonight he proved he should still be here.

What an awesome medley with Phil Vassar. I got the goose pimples.

Chris' performance i gotta say wasn't his best. IMO. He is still at the top, he has been the most consistent by far. But the rest of 'em got a bit closer tonight.

Nicole, hmmmm... I thought the judges were right, dang it! Like Phil Vassar said, "ballads aren't her thing"

Jared went home tonight, good luck to him in whatever he does.

Competition is getting tougher.

Overall for the show:
1.Chris
2.Matt
3.Casey
4.Nicole

Just based on tonights performance:
1.Casey
2.Chris
3.Matt
4.Nicole

Oh, Yeah. Ashley Judd will be making a guest appearance next week for all the guys. [Linked Image]
Sorry girls, but y'all still got Phil Vassar.

Regards,
Justin.

I played back the performances to double check and I am not sure what everyone was seeing in Casey Rivers this week. He wasn't bad, no question, but I still saw him solidly in third place.

Here's how I saw the performances tonight:

1. Chris
2. Matt
3. Casey
4. Nicole

I hate to say it, but Nicole picked a bad week to have her very worst performance of the entire show. If things are fair, she should be the next to go. I think for those who don't think Chris was the best, you need to play the performances back against each other. The tone and power of his voice was an entirely different level than the other two. I do think that the other two guys raised their performances, and I still think the same as I thought in the very first week that Chris will win and Matt will finish second. I had hoped for valiant battle by Nicole to take at least 1 of the guys out, but based on this week and last weeks disasterous original song, she's the one to go next. If she somehow survives another week, she really needs to hit a grand slam because Matt is headed for a record deal and Chris is headed for a long term superstar country music career. All of you who have written great country songs, you better get them ready to pitch (though the label may not be interested). Chris is going to be a 30 year star in country music if he wants it. He's really that good.

Well,
I listened as hard as I could last night. I was glad to see Nicole be on for another week. However I "Gulp" could only give Chris a tie for 4th place. Hopefully all of these preformers can get a record deal. But as Anastasia said to Chris, you better pick it up because you do have "Real" competition here.

Since this is decided by fan vote there is no telling who will get this record deal.

We shall see.

I thought Casey had the strongest showing last night by a hair over Chris, but Chris is still the frontrunner by a long shot in my book. Nicole's performance had me checking ESPN News for scores, whew. I like her, but that was rough.

Last night was a good show. Here are my thoughts:

Okay...I haven't held back from letting it known that I am "struggling" between two favs..Chris and Matt. Both did very well last night. Matt is who he is...he doesn't necessarily have the best voice or the strongest, but there is "something" about him that is very interesting and nice.. [Linked Image]
Chris WILL do well in this business whether he comes through as the winner or not..the boy is good. But to me, the "strongest" performance last night was Casey...my opinion, Casey does have the "best" vocal....even in the other shows, but like I said, just because someone has the "best" voice doesn't mean they are the best...if that makes sense..? ha.. Nicole...NICOLE!!! GIRL!! I'm afraid for you.. [Linked Image] You impressed me the first show over all others, and you have somehow lost it with each show. I WANTED to pull for you..I WANTED to vote for you...but .. [Linked Image]

Oh boy!! I think Nicole is the next one out and then any of the three guys left could be our next Nashville Star, the way it's looking...Get out there and kick some butt, boys!! Good luck to everyone. [Linked Image] (Go, Chris!!!)

Aside from Ray, who hasn't liked Chris at any point this season, I think the rest of you need to play back the performances and compare the performances. Though I think Casey was far better than he's been in previous weeks, I thought Matt was also better and Chris was slightly less fantastic than he's been every week. But that said, when you really listen to the tone of his voice and the power behind it, it's still a better vocal than Casey's. I think Casey's VAST improvement might be the reason some of you think he came out on top. I will say that I also could be clouded by the fact that I totally couldn't get into the song he chose on any level, it was probably my least favorite non original song of the entire competition, but I have every episode on my digital recorder and if you side by side Chris and other other competitor, it's so vastly in Chris's favor that I can't imagine anyone would think it was really all that close.

I checked the USA message boards for the fans and at the time I checked, Chris had over 50 to 1 lead on all the others in fan participation. I think it's also lopsided on My Space. It appears most others are still agreeing with me. But Chris definitely can't slow down because even if he gets the record deal (or the one he'll still get if he doesn't win) this is a chance to solidify a huge fan base right out of the gate and you should never waste a chance in the TV spotlight like this.. so just keep pouring it on Chris! If they do a tour with all these artists, I think it would be more enjoyable to watch than the Idol tour. I think all they folks are talented and when doing the right song, are as good as most out there in the Indie market. Nashville Star's process is still superior to American Idols.

With only 3 peforming next week, will they do the Duets perhaps?

Eh, it's just an opinion... I don't analyze, I just know what I like - and that's the way most of the fans will approach it, I think. I do think Chris is head and shoulders the best talent on the show... and he didn't have an off night, Casey had a very "on" night and you may be right that the increase in his performance over previous weeks had a part in my opinion. Doesn't matter anyway, every vote from my household went to Chris. My wife's a bigger fan than I am, I think. Damn him and his deep, rich voice, gentlemanly swagger and rugged good looks. [Linked Image]

I think they'll each do 2 songs next week, but I may be wrong.

Don't forget.. tonight it's down to the final 3 performers. Will JPF members Chris Young and Nicole Jamrose move toward the final 2? Watch tonight and see and if you like what they do, be sure to vote for Chris and/or Nicole!

Congratulations to Nicole Jamrose and Chris Young on making it to the Nashville Star Finale. I think Matt should have made it to the finale as well, but apparently the rest of the voters did not. If you haven't voted you have til 2 AM Hawaiian Aleutian Time (that's 8 am EST) on 4/26/06. Be sure to vote for Just Plain Folks members Chris Young and/or Nicole Jamrose. Good luck to both JPF'ers!!

Tonight I actually had a rare night off,and got to see the show for the first time ever,so if you don't mind the observations of a novice viewer, I thought Casey was best on this given night, I thought Nicole was strong, I thought that Matt deserved to be the one to go, {It's a shame, cuz he's "old school", and certainly isn't bad, and seems like a nice kid. However,I see what the fuss is about with Chris. Although he wasn't the best tonight {kinda lame song selection} he's got "IT".

Hi Folks,

I wasn't aware that this weeks voting would take it from the top 3 all the way to the winner.

I watched back the entire show to see why the male judge loved Casey so much and though vocally he had a nice performance, there's almost zero emotion in it on camera. I also noted the audience wasn't connected to him as an artist in the way that they were to Chris and also to Nicole and even Matt. I was disappointed to see Matt go because I think over the course of the show, he was deserving to outlast Casey and after Nicole had 2 bad weeks in a row, even though she's a JPF member, she should have been the next to go. That said, she certainly brought it again tonight and was in top notch form giving her best or second best performance of the series I thought. In the case of Chris, it's interesting that even his worst performance of the season was still better most of his competitors best. He's simply got no weaknesses. He never tanked a single performance and at worst he was the in the top 3 performers on a bad week and head and shoulders better than everyone else on an average week for him. When he was really on, he made the others looks like amateurs.. and that's amazing since the talent on Nashville Star was very good top to bottom this year. I actually will enjoy seeing all 4 of the finalists when they come through in concert! (Chris, you'll have to hook me up to come backstage and visit when you come through Indy.. hopefully for the state fair???).

This has been a lot of fun to watch and I am very proud that we played a little part in helping Chris out as he has matured in one of the most seasoned performers I've ever seen under 30 years old.. (and he's only 20!!!!). I am not sure how in the heck he got there, but I really can't wait to see where he's at over the next 20 years of his life.

Though I think Chris would have likely done well without our support, I really think that we've helped get both Chris and Nicole to the final show via the support of JPF members around the US. The voting is now over so we can just sit back and enjoy next week and big advanced congrats to all of the finalists for making the entire Indie/Grassroots musician community look good!

Well,
I was shocked last night. Nicole Jamrose making it to the finals.

Last week I had Matt and Casey in a dead heat for this record deal.

Chris, (finally) nailed a song. First time except for the first shows of which I can't remember.

Do not be too shocked if Nicole walks away with this Record Deal next week.

I have no idea who will win but they are all pretty good talent.

Just as good if not better talent has already left the show. And on it goes.

Casey had the top performance of the night, in my book, but Chris deserves to win. He's shown the most consistency, and he's got that magical aura known as star power - and he's a great songwriter. Nicole was good last night, but I thought Matt should have stuck around.

Was anybody else shocked that one of Idol's judges was "under the weather" mentally, but Scott Weiland and Duff McKagan were perfectly lucid and well-spoken? [Linked Image]

Well, well, well, and then there were three..

Last night shocked me. Nicole is still in the running...this is the shocker. I think Matt should have been in the final three instead. Casey Rivers can SING.. no doubt about it. BUT...Chris Young has it all, and I think he has lots and lots of support and fans already. Just never know though! Like Ray says, "Don't be too shocked if Nicole walks away with the record deal." I think Chris should walk away with it though. Good luck to all...

Sheila,

You know I've thought long and hard about this and I believe a big reason Nicole is still around is JPF. We've promoted members to check her out along with Chris. Because the viewership of Nashville Star is significantly less than AI, our 40,000 members and their reach I believe has a very tangible and significant effect on voting. We're the wild card. Since in previous years our members have been propelled to winning or finishing far higher than people expected (Matt Lindahl in year 2), and now Nicole and Chris, I really think the pattern is unmistakable. We didn't promote anyone in year 3 because I was on the road the entire time that the show was on and never saw an episode. I think we would have helped Jewels Hanson as well this season except they voted her off before the official voting even started so our members never got a chance. I've gotten tons of email from members who have been watching and saying their friends and families have been voting for JPF members that the facts seem to indicate that we really can affect the outcome. This year, I think Chris is certainly deserving of the win and Nicole (minus the last 2 weeks which were her low points) has been in the top 3 so that's also deserving. Ironically I learned only last week that Matt Mason has a connection to us and may even be a member, but we never promoted that fact in the newsletter or on this post which has had over 150,000 views meaning that's a LOT of potential votes.

So let's see where this goes. I am confident that Chris will get a record deal no matter what. I think if Nicole wins, it will be her best shot at a deal. She's a great artist, but doesn't fit as well in the industry as a 20 year old Chris Young does. I also think that Matt Mason will get a deal. He's extremely charismatic, 20 years old as well and I'd want to see what he was doing if he came through Indy in concert. I've never connected as much to Casey, but I recognize he can sing very well. I think he needs to work on connecting to his audience. He sings at them more than for them in my opinion (and all you have to do is watch his performances and listen to/watch the audiences far more subdued reaction. It was a smart move on his part to play the religious card to go after that vote however. I wonder if someone suggested that or he figured it out on himself. Following Nicoles version of "Sin Wagon" it should place a lot of religious votes into his corner. But in the end, Chris is simple the best talent on every level that Nashville Star has ever seen, including JPF member and year 1 winner Buddy Jewel. And Buddy has had great success since winning and is now a headliner himself. I remember in the early years of JPF sitting in the old AOL Chat Room we had talking with Buddy.. he's come a LONG LONG way since then. Chris has arrived, at half his age, just as seasoned. Amazing.

I was angry that Matt Mason was voted off. he's FAR better than Nicole Jamrose in any aspect you want to talk about. Before last night, I didn't think she deserved to be on the show at all. She belongs in the bars and county fairs. She has no big-ttime potential.

Besides - anyone brave enough to cover Waylon gets my vote every time.

I also don't see why Nicole Jamrose is still on and Jewels Hanson is gone. Hanson was by far the best that first night.

I don't have cable so I haven't seen any of the show but I was on www.clubnashville.com last night and one of the day's news statements was "Biggest buzz-Nashville Star contestant, Chris Young."

Not to diminish the accomplishments of Chris and Nicole {or anyone else for that matter}but truth is, on any given night there are thousands of people playing in bars,or other venues who can SMOKE anyone who's ever won American Idol or Nashville Star. {Just a little perspective.]{Sorry, having one my bitter senior moments, it'll pass!} All my best to Chris and Nicole.

Bob,

I've seen over 15,000 artists of all types, ages, genres and levels of experience... and I disagree. Chris is an exceptionally seasoned talent. Those folks you talk about may rise to an equal occassion in the obscurity and completely pressure free setting of a bar somewhere in the middle of nowhere now and then, but no in front of the totally unforgiving camera of a national TV show where you are performing for your very musical life every week. That type of pressure will (and does) buckle the most hardened performer often. I think it's interesting to note that the superstars who have performed on both shows this season would not have won any of the weeks they performed had then been contestants on the show. And these are household names known for their talent and performance ability. The truth is that shows like AI and NS put the contestants under a microscope that your bar player friends are not under and when that happens, you see every conceivable weakness and a single bad note is amplified 10,000 times the size it would be in a bar.

Chris at his very worst has been better than what you'll find in a bar anywhere in America on any given night. The others have had bad moments, but not Chris. I don't think any artist on the charts past or present could have that consistancy under the scrutiny of the camera and an audience full of jealous/disgruntled musicians who can't wait to say "I told you so.. they suck" and fans desperate to point out their flaws like they are now A&R staff members. It's a type of pressure that 99.9 of professional artists will never even approach. I've seen artists known for being the best of the best out on the road in nearly every major music community who had more flaws, but you just couldn't play it back on the TIVO to point it out. (Although I have played back all the performances from NS this year and Chris has never sucked..). I also have the tapes of the 15K artists to show that even the best of them were flawed in some way.

Just as the typical complaining Monday morning quarterback couldn't suit up for a single play and survive in the NFL, very few artists who rail against these kids could stand up for a single occassion and surpass these contestants, let alone sustain it for a entire season of scrutiny. The superstars who have appeared on both shows couldn't even do it once.

Well then....As I predicted, my bitter,senior moment has passed {I need to stay on the medication!{LOL} Anyway, I agree with you about Chris, I was amazed to find out he was only 20,{I couldn't find my ass in the dark with both hands at that age, much less be as poised and polished as he.By the same token though, those contestants only have to nail a couple of songs a night, as opposed to 40 or 50,{and have hundreds down pat}{granted, they have to pull it off in front of judges,and millions of viewers}{we should ALL be so lucky!}or write and record multiple albums of their own recordings, and they don't have to deal with the grind of doing it, 4 hours a night, multiple days a week , under sometimes trying, and often ludicrous conditions, {I'm NOT bitching, just stating the facts!} I guess the only way to find out for sure would be for some of these club musicians to enter these things. [With the upmost respect to Brian, working musicians, AND AI and NS contestants.}

Ha ha ha. I get your drift. It was cool that the Velvet Revolver boys were in house.

Was anybody else shocked that one of Idol's judges was "under the weather" mentally, but Scott Weiland and Duff McKagan were perfectly lucid and well-spoken? [Linked Image]

Bob,

You seem to think these artists, when not on Nashville Star, aren't gigging in the same way with the same number of hours and other issues that you describe. I don't know ALL their backgrounds, but I am pretty sure the majority, if not all, of them are full time musicians doing bar and other gigs night after night along with the rest of the indie artist community. I know several also have CD's out (I have Jewels Hanson's CD here on my desk as we're sending out Country music stuff to judges at the moment). I think most of them (as opposed to the AI contestants who often really ARE amateurs more often than not) on Nashville Star are full time artists just like you. And for those who lost, they will likely be right back into the bars and humping gear to their gigs as soon as the show is over.

Brian if that is indeed the case, then kudos to them! As I said in my original post, I've only seen the show once, so my ignorance in that area may have been on display. I may have been basing my judgement on what I've seen {admittedly little also} of American Idol. Usually I make sure I know from where I speak,so I throw myself at your mercy,{please send some hookers to flog me, I've been baaaad!}{LOL}
