Sting, Copeland in row over song rights 28/01/2006 - 15:00:00 Sting and former The Police bandmate Stewart Copeland are locked in a battle over rights to the band's hit songs. Copeland wants to remix a number of the band's tracks, but Sting, who wrote their most famous songs, is refusing to grant him the rights. The feuding pair attended the Sundance Film Festival in Utah earlier this week, where Sting's wife Trudie Styler and Copeland both screened their own films - Copeland's being a documentary about the band entitled Everyone Stares: The Police Inside Out. ------------------ Ande Rasmussen AndeRasmussen@aol.com http://www.AndeRasmussen.comhttp://songramp.com/andehttp://www.MySpace.com/andersEditor Of "Inspirations for Songwriters" Message archive: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DIFS/messagesTo receive IFS, SEND an EMPTY email to: difs-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

So it doesn't look like a Police reunion anytime soon..
They have been fighting since they first met. I remember seeing a documentary where they would regulary have actual fist fights..

At least they put aside their differences long enough to jam a bit together at their R & R Hall of Fame induction a couple years ago.
Sadly (or . . . maybe not), I don't see any long term projects coming from them as a band anytime soon - too stubborn.
Sting's introspection has gotten more & more annoying.

Maybe Sting has heard what the proposed remix sounds like, and maybe, is justified in his reluctance to go along with it. I am sure most writers has heard versions of our songs they hated. about it. Graham ------------------ http://www.soundclick.com/bands/2/grahamhenderson_music.htm

You know, I never understood the point of doing remixes anyway. Why don't artists just write and record new original music instead of tampering with their old stuff? It always struck me as something they do because they've dried up and run out of new ideas.

Sting isn't tampering with the material, one of his ex bandmates wants to. Big difference. Sting owns the material. He was the smart one in the band for retaining the rights to what he wrote. I can't blame him. But what I have learned is that if you truly want a band to stay together, then everyone has to get equal share. Queen was wise to do that - they all got rich, but Freddy and Brian were definitely the heavy hands, but they all pitched in. Now, personally, if I started making $2,000 a day on just one of my songs, every day years after it was released. Then mind you, I'd probably be a bit protective of it in that respect too. Now multiply that by the number of hits that Sting has had minus a bit off the $2k as that's for the biggest hit he had. And you're looking at some serious money coming in. Why mess with that formula? I think every one of us would be happy to have a song so popular that it was making us $2,000 a day. I know I would. I understood that the songs in question were Sting's, and I agree that he is right to withhold permission for the remixes. I was speaking about remixes in general, which never impressed or appealed to me.
I was also taking a shot, maybe unfairly, at Stewart Copeland, who only wrote the occasional Police song, and whose solo career wasn't really much to speak of. He did some interesting work with Animal Logic, though, and should continue to work towards creating new music.
