I agree on the Keith Richards comment..& let's add "You Can't Always Get What You Want" to the list of great intros, too...
Stevie Wonder's "Isn't She Lovely" comes to mind this AM, both Intro & Ourtro...

Red Bandana- Merle Haggard. Roy Nichols guitar work is fabulous on this intro.
Money For Nothing- Dire Straits. Same goes for Mark Knopler on this Dire Straits classic.

Hey Chris,
I met and spoke with the guy in charge of the Smithsonian Folkways collection and told him about your post on our site and then sent it to him. He was happy to hear your story.

I had to dig this thread up 'cause I just downloaded one of my favorite all time songs "Bambi" by Prince. The guitar riff on this song is killer. I remember as 18-19 year old fumbling around with the amp up real loud playing along with this...
The album this song is on (self-titled PRINCE) is his 2nd, and might not be really well known now, but this album is a classic and it ranks up there as one of my "OMG - I've seen the light!" when I first heard it albums. This was back when he played most the instruments on the albums himself too.

Hello, Did anyone mention "Dream On" by Aerosmith?
I see "Hotel California" by the Eagles was written about. Maybe especially the 1994 version with a slight flamenco flavored acoustic guitar sound.
(already mentioned) Boston - Foreplay Longtime The Who - Won't get fooled again Rolling Stones - Satisfaction The Doors - Light my fire Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody Beatles - Revolution Deep Purple - Smoke on the water Black Sabbath Jeff Healy band - Angel eyes Styx - Come sail away Lynyrd Skynyrd - Sweet home Alabama Led Zeppelin - Stairway to heaven
Sorry, I did not major in english.

Great thread, I love so many of the ones already mentioned, Stones, Beatles, etc, they're hard to beat. But how bout that BIG THICK NASTY GUITAR intro on Janis Joplins Ball & Chain on her Cheap Thrills album. That song takes me places everytime I hear it. ```````````````````` I Can't Quit You Babe, by Led Zeppelin. These are all great. My favorite intro is also what I use to warm up for fingerpicking, Song for a Winter's Night, by Gordon Lightfoot. I'm also partial to Midnight Hour, My Girl, Who's Making Love With Your Old Lady, House of the Rising Sun, Susie-Q, Anything James Brown ever did, Also Sprach Zarathustra (and I don't mean he spoke too!) and Rocky Top. ------------------ You have to practice improvisation. -Art Tatum Mike Dunbar Music
You've got to know your limitations. I don't know what your limitations are. I found out what mine were when I was twelve. I found out that there weren't too many limitations, if I did it my way. -Johnny Cash It's only music. -niteshift Mike Dunbar Music

Supertramp intro to "bloody well right" and their "school" instrumental is very interesting... The Band does something in the beginning of "the waltz" dvd that makes me listen up. And how about my "someones everything" instrumental solo by Fred Koch? lol Nice topic Brian...now I need to do a search to hear all of these songs that I'm not familiar with -YET! Nice to see Pete Townshend getting his props, especially on the "lost" classic Quadrophenia, as a whole, and individual gems such as Love Reign O'er Me.
How about Sweet Jane by the Velvet Underground, especially the long version on Lou Reed's live Rock 'N Roll Animal album.

Blue Suede's take on "Hooked On A Feeling" had a rather attention-getting intro:
"Hooga chaka, hooga chaka, hooga hooga hooga chaka..."
First time my dad heard it, he asked me, "What tribe is that?"

Checkerboard,
I think you mean, "The Way It Is," by BRUCE Hornsby. Good song choice, very memorable intro.

So many of the ones mentioned are ones I love. Haven't seen this one mentioned, and I always thought it had an awesome way of disguising the beat but pulling you in -- the intro to "What A Fool Believes" by Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins. - James ------------------ You can really only please one songwriter at a time. Might as well be yourself! :^) Samples of my music at www.soundclick.com/jamesmitchell.htm

Whoops, my bad thanks for the correction! Wish I had that Rogers Hornsby baseball card though!
Just re-listenend to "Who's Next" and Baba O'Reilly and "Won't Get Fooled Again" have really great intros. I remember hearing this album for the first time and was kind of taken by surprise at the "new" sound.

Fireball by Deep Purple.
I think that they used a large industrial fan from a large ducted heating system for that beautiful opener!
