If you feel you have what i takes take alook at my site first send me an email of what you want done and let me know if you are gonna send anything. SERIOUS PEOPLE ONLY.

There is no fee in the beginning but when the actual deal goes down there will be a finders fee and I charge a little more that 5% because im shopping you a deal free.

How serious do I have to be?

How serious are you that you don't have a real domain name for your company?

Do I HAVE to be registered with ASCAP?

Pardon my skepticism.

I would say ascap is the best BMI charges $250 for a membership and ASCAP is free. They only take apercentage when you make actual royalty earnings.

Please be aware - I went to this website and got trapped in a bunch of popups - looks like you're just trying to suck people into visiting your site for "hits" - I didn't see any information on music - sorry, buddy, but hit the road - as grandma would say, we're not so green as we're cabbage-lookin'.

Just to clarify, BMI does not charge $250, and ASCAP is not free.

It came up pop up free for me Guys.
It also read like something, I would want to tread a bit more if in fact I was an artist rather than just a writer.
One thoing I did notice in thee.
In the agreement section, the artist and the company get a mention, but not the writer, which would need to be included if the artist was not the writer of work to be done.
Not to sure of the we do it free aspect of this.
Nothing is free. Basically as I see it, you are speck shoping songs and artists.
You get to listen to them, decide if you think they can float, and on that ground, take a punt as a commission agent , if you like , and flog them around to your contacts, and if your hunch proved right, you get a cut.
Like I say. If I was an artist, Iwould be reading this well.
And if I was still convinced it could be a deal to go for, I'd trot it in front of my laywer.

I understand what you are saying graham , but I also tink nothing is wrong with a commission based company. Plus if ive tried everything I can to geta deal who loses really no one , no money loss at all maybe some time but nothing else really.

Im coming from the perspective of a producer , so meany times ive called management companies up and also personal managers . Alot of these deal shopping people want to work off of 2000$ retainers to shop you a deal . So yes my up front service is free because what does making a couple more contacts and making more phone calls hurt me to help someone else out . Plus in the end a finders fee would only be right and at the same time applicable because once a deal comes in place ur not dealing with small potatoes anymore. You've reached a goal that deserves paying. and I give the artist the choice to have further dealings with me or to NOt have further dealings I can also offer production.

I didn't say there was anything wrong with it Bob.
I said there is no free there.
You are a speck pitcher as I see it, and they take a punt on getting a return for their effort.
I think that is a good way to do it myself.
In fact applaude anybody prepared to givev it a go.

I don't know what's going on but I cannot imagine a legitimate company doing big business on a free service like Tripod. No real world website? I don't get it.

Just a little side issue here, I've got a Tripod site. I built it myself and it's free. Over three quarters of the hits I get on CDBaby.com come from this site. When I go on my own site, I don't get pop ups, just those ads at the top of the site. Two of my favorite news sites, the right wing www.worldnetdaily.com and the left wing www.salon.com both have many more ads and pop ups than mine, and they are high volume pro sites.

I've had only a few people recommend that I get a professional site, and most of those offer to sell me one. It may be that I'm losing business by not having a pro site, but I don't see how I can test that without paying for one, and I have other things to do with a hundred or two. In the meantime, I work a lot already and have a free site.

All the Best,
Mike

This guy will have a pro site soon. Cut him some slack. Hes not a shark, I've spoken to him on the phone and I like what he has to say. I am planning on working with him on some projects and am glad to have him part of my team.
If you want to work with him, cool. But you better have commercial ready material or forget it.

Hey Mick/Greg/all-

I have conversed with 808 (Mick Benford) several times in the last two weeks. He replied to my post- "Big Dame" looking for record deal etc. on the General Message, and Muscians Message Forums- which I posted.
Mick comes across in a courteous, and professional manner; and from what he told me, he is well connected to major labels- also, Clive Davis, an icon in the industry. His knowledge of the music business, producing, and his connections, are top notch.
If this information is credible, then
I would have to place my bet on 808.
His commision, is less than what is considered standard; I was told by several record companies, just for a referral of an artist, one is entitled receive a finders fee,(agents/managerials fee)of 10 to 20%.
Depending on how the deal is written, this percentage may produce the commision, for the length of the record contract.
Particularly, as an un-known, a one year contract, without asking for money up front, is a blessing.
Now can 808 make us $$$?
Life is a gamble sometimes- so is this business of music. Do some research, get a feel of Micks background, and potential.
My vote is- for Mick.

Cal

OK, 808, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. If some of our colleagues have spoken with you and say you're on the level, fine.

I still get a blast of popups when I go on your site. It's still full of errors and doesn't really inspire a whole lot of confidence that you're truly connected. So I guess my gentle advice now would be: if you're really in this for the right reasons, get some help with your site, get some help with spelling and grammar (and yes, it DOES matter when you're trying to project a professional image) and come forward with some names of people you have worked with, or some endorsements of what you do or have done.

One of the running themes on this site is that when you get ready to take something out to the public you better make sure it's the best it can be. We polish our songs, examining every word to make sure they fit and work and are perfect.

There was not a trace of that attention to detail in your site or your post.

You just blasted in here and expected everyone to stand up and take notice. We see that all the time; most people who do that are not heard from again. The mantra of many seems to be "fake it until you make it." To your credit, you stayed and engaged, and some of our members checked you out, giving you more credit than I would have done based on first impressions.

Best of luck to you and those who decide to work with you; I still say you've got some work to do if you're going to try to build relationships in this business. The fundamentals still, and will always, apply.

Hi Guildslinger/all-

By all means, in any possible professional relationship with anyone you don't know- check out the persons track record-
Ask for references- get a verifiable list of credits- accomplishments.
Ask to speak to some of the persons current and past clients.
Talk to his/her's lawyer- get your lawyer to make some calls-
I only "spoke" with Mick, and feel he is trying to be honest.
I can't verify, his total abilities, as a producer, or if he can make you a success in the record industry.
Got a good feel from his rap- though.

Cal, that's good solid advice for everyone as well as uncommon common sense. ESPECIALLY where money and relationships are concerned. My post above was offered in the spirit of some hard advice, or "tough love," if you will. Hope it will inspire 808 to improve his presentation and create something really great, which will enable him to be that much more helpful to others. Including, one would think, some jpf'ers. What's that about a rising tide lifting all boats. . .
. . and if the connections truly are there, I'm sure he'll certainly want to be at the top of his game when those named (e.g. Mr. Davis) casually stop by his website to check out wassup.

Its funny how I got many critiques and some people really didn't get the point. I am aware that there is alot of amateaurs in here , and Im also aware that there are some business oriented people in here. Well for anyone who knows business , a true business person knows how to create something from nothing. A true businessman knows how to create his own buzz even without top notch credits on anything . matter a fact I didn't even have to have the connections I do have and I would still know how to offer a business proposition. Some people like taking dips in the water some don't , but if you look at most business people today especially the music ALLL of them came from nothing and formed something and created their own buzz out of nothing. Some of these major labels were small A&R bullcrap companies before they even became majors. Puffy didn't even have a a studio of his own when recording biggie but he payed sudio time and created his product and performed a service with that.

From that crappy lil page I got atleast 50 emails alrdy WIth I might add an unregistered business name. Most of the time its always the unusual quite observing people who succeed. Not the ones out in the open who perceive what they wat and say what they have to say. Im not putting anyone down but I know the standards of an upcoming businessman because Ive seen a businessman for myself first hand personally build an empire have it crushed and then built again. FROM NOTHING.

Hi Mick,

Just wondering how long you have been shopping deals for and if you have had any success? Good deals are hard to come by these days it seems!

I'm mainly looking to license a finished master for a P&D or similar. Hoping to have the master done in '05, but I do have 2 previous Indie releases. I'm open to an Indie-Major type situation and I'm also open to overseas labels.

I have network TV placements and have also placed with Paramount.

I do Contemporary R&B/Soulful Pop/Hot AC (basically CHR stuff with major crossover appeal).

Thanks,
Natalie Brown
