My question- Is it proper to expect a commission, "Finders' Fee," for getting another a record deal?

A couple of months ago I pitched two unknown artists who I met recently, to a Nashville record label who was signing artists.

One was a female Country singer local to the Michigan area, and the other was a minister out of Ozark, MO. His style was Traditional Country/Gospel. Both were pro's with CD's, and packages. One produced by a well known Nashville producer. They both were happy that I took it upon myself to help them out, and gave me the go ahead.

While searching my listings for additional record companies, to pitch these artists to, I was informed by at least two CEO's that I would be entitled to a managerials/agents fee, or "Finders' Fee," in the event a deal would be signed. Ten to twenty percent of the revenue produced by the contract.

I was not looking, for a kick-back, but was indeed, surprised.

What the hey, if by mere chance, record deals were signed, and a ton of money was made, should a person such as me, or you,
receive a piece of the pie?

The record company in question told me, they pay the finder the fee, irregardless if the finder does or does not have a verbal or legal agreement in advance. They do this automatically. I did not find it appropriate to ask how much at the time.

P.S. I did not receive a courtesy call back from either artist, or a thank you note for my effort.

That's called good business practice. Few probably do it if they aren't forced.. I think it speaks volumes about the integrity of the record labels you're dealing with. Unless there is a contract (verbal agreements can be sketchy in court) they likely have no obligation to pay you, but good business people treat people fair and hope that you'll also bring them the next act they want to sign. Sounds like you've run into smart and fair and honest people.

Brian- Well stated!
I have been fortunate making solid contacts since I started pursuing my songwriting.

Having a helpful nature, and by a series of events (while checking out studios contacting vocalists as possibilities for singing on my demos even traveling to a few states with my job,) I managed to put this thing together. It was spontaneous, and actually, the first time I tried interacting in this part of the music industry.

I did learn one thing. Do your home work, and know your stuff.

Hey cal,
I also did some promotion for a group out of
A contemporary gospel group.
They had won a contest and a trip to
Nashville to do a demo.
I gave their cd to a dj that I know at the
radio station besides telling other contacts
about them.
I was'nt looking for anything though nor did
I recieve anything.
Hey were all in this together.
This is a good read; Thanks!
