I have a publishing company that has already made and sent me a demo of a song I wrote. Is there any time frame when a contract should be sent to me? TYIA

Hi, Golden rule - do your homework. Make sure the publisher is legit. By your message it appears you have done that. Second get some legal help, have a lawyer check out every clause. Good luck. Stan ------------------ Having Fun!!!! http://www.soundclick.com/bands/8/stanlohmusic.htm

I have one publishing company I work with that will re-demo your song if they feel their demo facilities will present your song in a much better light than your own demo. Of course, they do this at their own cost. Their only stipulation is that if at the end of the 2-year contract period, you want your song back (moving it to another publisher), that you reimburse their demo costs - which are quite reasonable...something like $300-400 - and they do very nice demos. That's kind of like the "wholesale" cost for the demo. I'm surprised they haven't offered up the contract BEFORE they went to the expense of demoing it. This is not the usual sequence that I've heard of before. Why don't you just call them and ask them what's up? If they're really honest and they're demoing your song, they'll definitely talk to you and explain their reasoning. Any publisher I've used always takes (or returns) my calls. It would behoove you to establish a rapport with them anyways. Also, remember there is no "standard" publishing contract. Each publisher has their own contract. Just make sure you get a reversion clause included. Usually they get the song for 2 or 3 years UNLESS they get it professionally recorded and distributed by an artist or placed somewhere in TV/film. Sometimes these "distribution" clauses are a bit vague, and sometimes they include a minimum number of "sides" (such as 1000 or 5000) before that clause kicks in. Most publishing contracts are 2-4 pages and aren't that complicated, but for your peace of mind, often you can find an entertainment attorney who will look it over for free as an incentive to get you to pay them for future services. If you're that nervous about it, you may want to have a legal eagle check it out once you get it. Just my $.02... ------------------ Larry www.audibleresponse.com
