Here’s an interview I just did with 2020 Just Plain Folks Male Artist of the Year Harold Payne. From Peter, Paul and Mary to Snoop Dogg, we examine Multi-Platinum Songwriter Harold Payne’s musical life “Under the Radar and Over the Moon!”
We discuss his long collaboration with Rock Hall of Fame Member Bobby Womack, their UK Q Award winning collaboration with Damon Albarn (Blur, Gorillaz) and even a crazy day at Eddie Murphy’s house at the height of his career. I kick it off asking about the early days of Cheech and Chong onto discussing his songs in films like Splash, The Joy of Sex, Beverly Hills Cop II, Summer Rental and more. I challenge him for stories on the many famous artists to record his songs from Rod Stewart to Patti Labelle, Lana Del Ray to the Temptations to… watch and see!
How do you build a human Loop Machine or serenade a Lyft Driver on the way to a gig? I share his short videos on those too.
How do you make a long, full time musical career work without becoming famous? Watch and see!
This is our very first Artist interview, it's a casual chat among friends. We look forward to interviewing many more of our talented and award winning members!
Very interesting indeed, and extremely talented guy! His lifetime of music is obvious and very impressive as he makes performing look as easy as breathing. I'm sure there's lots of anonymous heroes in the music industry
Although the content is very interesting, I feel that the questions asked could have been more concise in order to allow the interviewee to tell his story.
Perhaps the vision could be edited and to focus on the interviewee be brought forward to provide balance.
I would suggest some cutaways to the conversation, perhaps old footage to reinforce the conversation.
Thanks for the feedback. We discussed it beforehand and decided we wanted it to be conversational and between friends rather than a TV talking head interview. But certainly understand your points. It was a first try so I have an infinitely long list of things I could do better. We barely even got started and the time flew by past the hour. Next time out we will implement improvements. I have a long line of diverse artists to interview and will revisit Harold.

I think i tried to post in this one but at time it said not allowed to post in announcement...
I thought it was really good interview. Shoulda asked him how much exercise per week he does, and what his favorite late night snack was...lol ive seen that on some videos...
Hearing someone who has been there and done that, tell their stories in whatever format is appealing content for a songwriting website. In future ones, if you could get such people to focus on the mechanics of how they see and execute an original song...would be of great interest to people like me.
Yes, the informal conversation tpye of format has become popular over the simple Q&A sfuff, and is much more interesting.
Have you seen Seinfield's " Comedians in cars getting coffee" ?
At first it appears it's just two buddies in a classic car driving around and having coffee. Yet the content is very informative and interesting.
Anthony Bourdain also did a conversational series "Parts Unknown" where he flies into a country to catch up with a chef/buddy and they go about and sample the local grass roots food. Again, casual where the content is either unscripted or only partially so.

Be good to have him on the site.
He's been here but he's usually gigging or flying to events etc. He does 2 live shows on Facebook a week plus regular gigs even in California. We didn't even get to most of his stuff. We've toured together a lot and he never runs out of stories.
