Have you tried using different materials? How did it affect the sound/sustain of your acoustic?

I asked a guitar luthier that I use on occasion about changing out my bone saddle vs ivory. He told me I wouldn't probably discern the difference. Of course you have to find a luthier who has old ivory, as its not legal to use new harvested ivory. I decided against the change. I'm can't see bridge pins being as effective for tonal change as a saddle would be. You pretty much get your tone from your guitar top foremost and the other woods used--of course assuming a quality made guitar. That's why its nice to have a couple/three acoustics to give yourself some tonal variety.

Thank you Mac and Eddie for your reply.

I'm always thinkin: I wondered what brass pins would sound like, I googled and some say less definition in bass reponse. Many people said ditch the plastic your guitar came with and go with bone. I'm always thinking: what about mixing bone pins with brass., I started thinking about this because I wondered what the sound would be, (and more importantly) what the stress would be, if I drilled holes through the pins so the strings fed directly. Of course the angle over the saddle comes in to play...

I think about the only way to really get accurate feedback on this topic is to converse with a luthier who has worked on a famous performing artist's guitars that has have the notoriety that a luthier will devote the kind of time for experimentation such as you are talking about. I know myself when I've inquired with a few guitar techs that they don't always agree and concur on questions that I've asked concerning acoustic guitar tonal adjustments. I know bone supposedly is good because of its ability to really be "neutral" in affecting the vibrations and letting them resonate more naturally. My last discussion with a luthier was such that, "if it ain't broke, don't fix or mess with it." He said if you're looking for a brighter tone or a more bass tone--find the right guitar with the wood species & structural design that delivers what you like or want--that's why selecting your guitar should be a "process," not a rash decision.

There may me merit to making changes with brass/ivory--but those changes I don't think will supersede the primary sound-box of your acoustic guitar. I have a hand made 1991Alvarez Yairi 6 string with a "graphite" saddle. It's a more quiet guitar as it also has Coa sides rather than mahogany--I like it for studio work as it records well and doesn't need much eq adj. If I'm outside playing on porch, I have an old 1968 Yamaha that booms loudly, but the Yairi is better suited for the studio. I enclosed a video discussing Yairi bridge/saddle/pin relationships. I really think the pin's function is more just holding strings firm and tight and won't affect tone so much as I think this vid demonstrates.
