Hi folks - this got started from a challenge on another site about writing lyrics with a well-know phrase from another language. Since Canada is a bilingual country it seemed like a good fit coming from a Canuckster. smile Any feedback or suggs are welcome.

Au Revoir

Au revoir, mon ami, au revoir
Au revoir to the nights when we set the world on fire
I'll try to get by without your light in my life
Au revoir, mon ami, au revoir

Goodbye my dear friend goodbye
Goodbye to the nights when we laughed until we cried
I'll try to get by without your light in my life
Goodbye my dear friend goodbye

Au revoir, mon ami, au revoir
Au revoir to the times when we set the world on fire
I'll try to survive without your light in my life
Au revoir, mon ami
Au revoir, mon ami
Au revoir, mon ami
Goodbye.

Cute song that exudes the good humour you always seem to bring with you. Beautifully performed and produced. One thing I'm not sure of. That hissing in the background - at first I thought it was designed to create an old time 78 RPM record kind of atmosphere, but it would stop and start and I think it was just brushes on the drums. I don't think it added anything to it. I'm biased because I don't like brushes, but I think it might be better without. On the other hand an old record crackle could add to the charm.

Another great song, Paul.

Thanks Gavin. Appreciate the kind words.
Yeah I kinda agree about those brushes even though I am a fan of brushes.
The drum track was a freebee loop where I don't have much control.
I'll see if I can scale 'em back a bit through EQ.- or find another freebee grin

.. and crackle might work too grin

cheers
Paul

I liked it. I thought you did a lovely job singing and capturing this style.
I wondered what it would sound like if you lost the second line in each verse and went to the third. Doing that I think a bridge would really work.
Best!

Paul,

Love the tuneósuch a throwback. Yes, I could hear a bit of a crackling radio/album laying beneath this to give it some mood . . . and maybe just a little fuzz on that vocal to give it a bit of an old time, thirties sound to it. But itís terrific as is . . . lovely arrangement. Always look forward to hearing what you post on the board . . . this no exception. Outstanding work!!

All my best,

Deej

Cheers Mike and thanks for giving it a listen. A bridge you say? Maybe - I kind of ran out of things to say or would have put one in grin

Thanks Deej - I guess it is a bit 30's come to think of it. Interesting idea about fuzz on the vox. I'll give it a try grin

Paul,

What a perfect soundtrack scene song for a musical! Loved it, don't change a thing--it is simple in it's expression and perfect for the appropriate scenario. The song in "itself" is a bridge between scenes, no bridge needed IMO. You have a knack for the cinema or stage songs--you may want to direct pitching to that market, or think bigger and look into building a screenplay around music ideas........

Enjoyed this very much!

Paul,

This has a holiday feel to it. I can picture Burl Ives singing it. I love the rhythm guitar that's carrying the song along and the little drum solo break in the middle.
I'm learning things from you. I see how nicely you're balancing things. I can hear just enough of the bass to hold the bottom down. You've got a nice friendly voice
too. The sad lyrics betray the happy feel of the melody and your voice. I kinda got lost in the melody to realize that it's melancholic. I wouldn't change anything.

Paul,
I concur with the last few comments, I can picture this lovely song in a stage play or movie, and the voice is perfect for this song. I like the brushes, and wouldn't change a thing.

Paul, by coincidence, this landed in my inbox - a plug-in from Izotope that can create that old record crackle. It's free. I downloaded it but haven't tried it yet. Since it's from Izotope, it's probably pretty good.

Thanks for the kind words Eddie. Yes I've often thought doing a musical play would be fun - just haven't had th time. Maybe after I retire smile

Thanks Dan. That was a concern of mine - that is a "happy" goodbye song - but I guess happy goodbyes do exist out there and hopefully the contrast works. Appreciate you listening and the generous comments smile

Thanks Gavin. I downloaded and installed that plug-in. Looks interesting and you can't argue with FREE smile I fixed the "noise" issue BTW with a noise-removal feature in Audacity - so thanks for that feedback too. smile
