Hello everyone,

I have written quite a few lyrics from different genres and would really love for someone to bring them alive with music and a voice.

You can check them out here http://www.sellinglyrics.com/profile/kareni.html

If you are interested please let me know.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Kind regards,
Karen

Karen,

In the future, post your lyrics directly on the lyric review board. You will get a much better response. The site you link to is too slow. From the one lyric of yours I did see, Oxygen of Lobe, it strikes me that you are a good writer.

It seem like for every composer out there, there are 10 lyricists looking for him/her. I would suggest that if you are serious about being a song-writer, and you intend to write music for the rest of your life, learn to play an instrument. People who don't have a musician's are always intimidated by music and many don't have the patience/discipline to learn to play. But it is the best investment you can make in your song-writing. Heck, you really don't have to even learn to play an instrument to use it in your writing. All you need is a piano and your right hand. You can plot out chord progressions and develop melodies from that just by playing around.

No legitimate person "buys" lyrics...and certainly not for the price you're asking. A songwriter is one of the lowest paid(if not THE lowest paid)in the music business. If you have a million selling song and you are the sole writer, you make about 4.5 cents per copy or $45,000, not counting performance royalties, which can never be accurately counted since they use sample periods of airplay for computation.

If you'll look closely at her page, you will see that she is not selling her lyrics. Others to whom she is linking are but not her.

That completely depends on the strength of the writers' catalogue.

If you own the publishing, you double that. BTW, there are a lot of clerks and office people in the music industry who don;t make that in a single year.

Thanks for the information it's really helpful. I understand how it works re selling lyrics etc and I am learning more as I go along. I will re-post my lyrics in sub categories by genre. Just maybe there is a composer out there who needs some inspiration. I can play some instruments, guitar and keyboard although neither very well. I had ideas of melodies while I wrote the songs but I'm good with words and if I could find someone who was good with the music side and we worked together, I think it could be more successful for both of us. If that's not an option then I guess I will be devoting more time to improving my musical skills smile

I agree that you should post your lyrics one at a time on the lyric boards here. You will get some helpful feedback if you ask for it and you might find someone who would want to compose music for them.

You can write lyrics on whatever subject you want, but my perspective is that most people want to be entertained by songs. I don't find songs about killings and suicides very entertaining.

Good luck.

Well to me music can be very emotive and thought provoking. I wrote one song about a mans conscience fighting for his own life as he considered suicide. I volunteered for a suicide prevention charity and if just one person in that position ever read those words or listened to that song and it made them change their mind, then to me it was worth it. It's written with prevention not promotion in mind.

Likewise with Too Late For Me. Knife crime in the UK is growing incredibly and too many young people are dying. If someone as influential as a music artist could sing this song, maybe some young people would listen and again, if just one life was saved then that would make me happy.

Karen,
I apologize for criticizing you for selling lyrics. I misunderstood. Thanks to rblight for pointing that out.

Yes, it would depend upon the strength of the songwriter's catalog regarding being the lowest paid...but I meant percentage-wise in the whole music pie on one hit song. Even if you include publishing (approximately 9% total) there is 91% revenue going other places.
True, some clerks might make less than $45,000 in a year...but they are paid by salary. Songwriting can be a whole lot less secure, financially speaking.

Hi Karen,

I am interested in helping you make these lyrics into songs. Would you be singing them or did you have someone else in mind?

Best,

Karen,

A few things you might want to keep in mind. Most of music now has become an "everyone can do it" affair. Pretty much anyone can write down some lyrics, or what they consider lyrics, (most are just poetry or stream of conciousness words) put them to some rudimentary form, or even purchase or stream tracks, or get computer programs that have pre-programed band in a box type tracks, put it on a camera phone or record a very rudimentary form and they have a song.

What that means is the desire for "pre-written" lyrics, are almost non-existant. And, as been said before, there are 10,000 lyricists for every composer out there. It's a very "do it yourself" art form. Even the "composers" now write their own lyrics.

What you might consider is building relationships with several people and write new lyrics to what they are interested in saying instead of offering completely done lyrics. Sometimes you can even adapt some of your other lyrics into new songs. In the world I work in, the songwriting of Nashville, there is no one that would ever take an existing lyric, because they want to interject their own emotions, experiences, and attitudes, and a pre-finished lyric shuts that process out.

On "social issues" like people 'dying in the UK by knife, etc,' if you see it, thousands and thousands of other writers see it too, so what you write becomes swallowed completely by a plethora of other people writing about the same subject matter. How many songs about Covid 19 do you see out there. And one of the things you have to be aware of on those cases, are that many of them are comitted by members of the Islamic faith. And those are some people you DEFINATELY DON'T WANT TO WRITE ABOUT. A couple of people in France recently found that out the hard way. They were killed and beheaded for simply showing or talking about CARTOONS written about that faith. Not a good career move. And since a lot about songs can be about INTERPRETATION, you might have no control over what people THINK it's about, even though that is not your intention. Can be extrodinarily dangerous.

And this comes down to the desire to have "an artist" record your song. Artists will write and record their own versions of the same thing. But few will do "social issues songs" because they alienate half their audience who don't aggree with their outlook, no matter how seemingly benign it is. Or in the cases I just mentioned, can actually be fatal. In the "cancel culture" you can now be erased from people's conciousness, very quickly. Which is why very few artists are going to take on Social issues to begin with. It's not really good for business. The major reason for this that everyone has their own opinions, and the "soapbox" of the Internet. So having ANOTHER singer, ANOTHER ACTOR, SPORTS STAR, CELEBRITY, screaming about their social beliefs gets just overdone and overboring quickly.

Artists have to be careful on what they do, and can be "typecast" very quickly. We have an American Country artist here named MARTINA McBRIDE. She has been very successful, is beautiful, talented, magnificent voice. But there came a time when she had quite a few hits on social issue songs. Mostly about domestic abuse.
She three or so hits and then became known as the poster girl for that issue. No one would pitch her anything else. And since she was a writer as well, she simply quit recording songs about that issue and anything from outside her own catelogue.

So in anything you do, you need to think BEYOND the song, and just because you have some lyrics and wish people would embrace them, you need to understand that most people are simply not going to take anyone else's songs over their own, just like almost no one will take someone else's opinion over their own.

My strong suggestion is for you to look for composers but work on writing WITH THEM and not just deliver a lot of finished product and expect them to embrace them.
It's just not that era anymore. Good luck in any thing you do.

MAB

It appears Karen started this thread in 2008, she's had 12 years to come up with a new strategy...

The site is no longer there and I'm miffed cause I waa going to buy all her lyrics. I figure I could buy all of them for a grand, and then turn them into smash hits and make millions!

And I was just thinking the one thing I could really use right now is a bunch of lyrics , they are so hard to come by.

So I guess now my only option is to write my own lyrics.

As one of my favorite teachers used to say, when somebody knocked on the door, somebody answer that, It might be opportunity knocking!

Ahh what could have been!

LOL! I didn't see that either. I don't always go to these types of threads but I've seen this type of thread recently. "Have lyrics to sell...." Usually they have been contacted by one of the "song services" or found some web site promising all kinds of riches, you know "Turn your poems into songs for fun and profit."

I had not seen her picture before, so I thought it was a new one. The amount of people who "discover" the world of songwriting a day, is astounding. Again, the Internet puts milions upon millions of them out there, and they are SURE they have THE NEXT BIGGEST HIT IN THE WORLD, and is worth a fortune.

Sorry to reinvigorate the thread.
