www.farmaid.org ? to see how to tune in and who's playing. At Live Aid, many years ago, a fundraiser for the crisis in Ethiopia, Bob Dylan said, "Somebody ought to do something like this for the American farmer." Somebody did.

"Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp organized the first Farm Aid concert in 1985 to raise awareness about the loss of family farms and to raise funds to keep farm families on the land. "

It is the large farms that killed the small farms. They made their profit on volume through mass production, usually subsidized by governments that small farms could not partake of. I know first hand because I was a small farmer, my son still is. Many small farmers had to take an off farm job to survive. These large farms usually specialize in one or two crops to keep machinery and storage cost down, while small farmers grow a more diverse variety of crops to satisfy their customers needs. Small farms are more hands on, therefore more labour intensive, while large farms has cut labour cost through using machinery that is too costly for small farms to own. Small farms buy supplies is smaller quantities as opposed to large farms, therefore they are paying top dollar. Even though the small farm product is tastier and safer, it is hard to convince stores and even consumers to pay the extra few cents needed so small farms can survive.
