I can`t find this song, I don`t know the title of it I do remember some lyrics.. and I think it was covered in the late 90`s by someone. I do believe Eddie Arnold had the first recording..

some of the lyrics:

there is to many rivers between us
to, many dreams have been lost, to many long nights I`ve turned and i`ve tossed..
to many rivers to cross.

now don`t think for a moment I blame only you
we both killed the fruit on the vine..
when you try to put love back together again
there is always some pieces you can not find... I tried to look up "to many rivers" nothing,I found "many rivers, tried to
looked all over for that song by eddie arnold "nothing. thanks for any help. Lane

Before Alabama came along, The Statler's were considered the best group out there. I still consider them the best because all of them had great voices that could have made it on their own. They wrote and recorded so many great songs, plus doing so many great covers and they were so nice to see live. Of course, I am an old fogey, so what do I know!

Have a goodun,

I agree with you John, S Brothers, were the first, and that opened up a flood of others in those years 70`s 80`s 90`s...and good groups and Misic. Diamond Rio, Shenandoah, to many to mention. I`m betting I`ll never find this recording of that song. It was almost soulful. things like that bother me if I can`t find them....lol

Don't forget The Oak Ridge Boys, and the Gatlin Brothers. The 80's had some great vocal groups. My Favorite was Exile.

Hi Marc,

We can go back to those days through music, thats so cool, Exile had one of my fav" songs I think it was called "close enough
I can find that! https://youtu.be/lZHY2fwsCUk don`t forget Pogo! music moved on and most of these guys went to other groups, or produced, not all but most stayed in music I think.

Lane1777,

Exile is pretty much the main reason I came to Nashville. I had lived a rock career for 12 years, starting early in high school, with the music of FOGHAT, KISS, and many of the Southern rock era bands like 38 SPECIAL (who I would end up being a co-writer with their main writer, Jim Peterik) Allman Brothers, Charlie Daniels, and Skynyrd. In the 80's, we morphed into a band similar to Journey, Styx, Loverboy, and rode that for a few years throughout the Southeast. Then, music started to change in rock. It went darker, first with the "HEAVY METAL BAND OF THE WEEK (RATT, Poison, etc) and later into Seattle Grunge, NIRVANA, and then into hip hop and rap, and everything was very, very dark. Too dark for me.

Then, I started listening to country music. On a Saturday afternoon, I was giving tickets to go see Lee Greenwood, who I liked, with the opening act EXILE, who had been a rock act. They hit the stage like a firestorm, with GREAT SONGS, ENORMOUS HARMONIES, and just a rocking attitude that you would see in those Southern Rock days, I was HOOKED on Country. I had always been sort of a fan, loved George Jones and those other acts like the OAKS (My Dad sang with them for a bit in their gospel days) and others.

At that time I met a group of people who were songwriters, and got a mentor, Ron Muir, who had lived in Nashville for years with some success writing wise. That's when I started thinking of moving to Nashville, writing country stuff, and ended up moving in 1988. Over the years I've performed with almost all of those people in one way or another, JP Pennington, Tony Hazelton, Sonny Lemaire, have all been writers I've performed with and gotten to know a bit. Most of the people who I watched those years ago, I have come to know and be around through my time in this town.

Most of them are still out there (although today, mostly OUT THERE AT HOME, due to Covid) but they still write, produce, perform, work with other people. It's sort of the way of things. Most people start with dreams to be hit artists, and some achieve that. Then they morph into writers, producers, etc. yet, still perform themselves. It's sort of like the Rap world where some star comes out, forms their own company, then develop other stars underneath them, while keeping their hands in. You find that in most forms of music.

But Exile is still one of my favorites. When you asked about "POGO" were you talking about "POCO?" Those guys were amazing, with astounding harmonies and musicianship, but their biggest claims to fame is they provided the two bass players for the EAGLES. Randy Miesner and Timothy B. Schmidt. Music is an odd family tree and it is cool to learn about all these influences and offshoots that people go through in a career.

Good conversation. Thanks.
MAB

Thats a great story Marc, "38 Special is still on my playlist today.
I grew up with country always on the air, in the early years I met a friend
Ronnie Montrose and He taught me two things, I was no Rocker,
and two different scales on a guitar. I only knew 3 chords, and they
were totally different if He was playing them....lol
But like you Ronnie had "intention, I did not. He went to San Francisco
and my life filled with other things.

That again is a great story, thanks so much for sharing M.A.B
its always interesting learning how others came to where they are,
what prompted them and what held them back.
Lane p.s [ yes Poco they are on my playlist too.

Lane,

RONNIE MONTROSE?!!!!! i LOVED RONNIE MONTROSE!!!! "YOU'RE ROCK CANDY BABY" and "BAD MOTOR SCOOTER" were some of the first songs we used to do in our first band. Loved those guys, with Denny Carmassi, "megafoot", on drums, who would go on to play for HEART. And Sammy Hagar on vocals! Wotta band! Montrose played with about everyone in the early 70's, Edgar Winter, Boz Scaggs, Van Morrison, Gary Wright, and many more. Unfortunately, like far too many creative people, suffered with depression his whole life and comitted suicide in 2012. Very unfortunate. But man, was he GREAT! So cool you got to know him.

That is one of the coolset things in the world, the people music brings across our paths.

Very cool story from you too Lane, thanks for taking me back to my youth.
