Hi All, Couldn't resist a little comical relief. Fresh Ink. I want it something along the lines of "Prop Me Up Beside the Jukebox", with a 4 beat pause between "Aaand..." and the chorus and the chorus to speed up about 20%, and a turnaround between the first chorus slowing into 2nd verse and repeat the pattern.
Don’t Send My Ashes to My Exes
I have a few requests Before my time to go I don’t want any funeral No final fancy show Don’t cover me in dirt Or put me in a box Run me through the fire Make it good and hot
Aaaaaaand….
Don’t send my ashes to my exes when I die-------------} Chorus I want some sweet relief on the other side I’ve heard enough complainin’ It’s an awful sound My ears are mighty sore don’t want another round
Throw me a big party Invite all my boys Everyone get drunk Make a lot of noise Even if they call the cops Make it last for days Somethin’ to remember Maybe a parade
Aaaaaaand….
Don’t send my ashes to my exes when I die-------------} Chorus I want some sweet relief on the other side I’ve heard enough complainin’ It’s an awful sound My ears are mighty sore don’t want another round
Don’t give them to my brother-----------------------------} Bridge He’ll surely make me pay And give them to my exes For stealing all his dates
Instrumental Break
Aaaaaaand….
Don’t send my ashes to my exes when I die-------------} Chorus I want some sweet relief on the other side I’ve heard enough complainin’ It’s an awful sound My ears are mighty sore don’t want another round
Don’t send my ashes to my exes when I die-------------} Chorus I want some sweet relief on the other side

I like this. The trouble with a song like this is that only those of us with exes really understand. I would try to come up with a very clever lyrical bridge before completing with music. If you can't - stay with the musical bridge.

Summeoyo Thanks for the read, and the comments. I thought everyone had exes these day. I have to sing this and time it out before decding to add a bridge. I've been a little lazy. This looks like it could be a cool one, John.
The lyric may need to explain why his exes shouldn't have them unless of course ashes have ears. Are all your exes in Texas?

Thought it was a fine write John. The problem I had with the title was-who would? If you're going for comical, I would change it so that the exes were sent the ashes so he could have a laugh on the other side. Best -Mike

Hi Vic, Thanks for the read and the comments. Country folk are very superstitious so yes, the ashes could hear, especially if the voices were anything like my exes. 3 of my exes are in NJ, the 4th is in the Philippines. There will never be a 5th.

Hi Mike, Thanks for the read, To your question, there's lots of folk that thinks spirits hang around, at least for a while, after you die. This is an irreverant look at that. Like the song stye of "Prop Me Up Beside the Jukebox if I Die". Country folk will "Get" it.

I like a funny song, and this fits the bill. The only problem I have with it is the central premise. Why would they send someone's ashes to an ex of his? Humor works best when related to a situation that is familiar or relatable. I'm sure you can find a way around that if you want to. It might not matter. it might just be me. It usually is Like Vic, I thought of "All My Exes Live in Texas." I think a lot of people will make that association.

John, my point was the same as Gavin's-who would send ashes to their ex? That's why I said it would be funny if they did send them....

One of the hardest things in songwriting is coming up with new/unique ideas/hooks. I posted this on another songwriter site and had a bunch of responses but no one asked why. One did say i should write another about sending the ashes to the exes though. I already did my rhyming Texas song, "Drove His Lexus into Texas" here: https://www.soundclick.com/music/songInfo.cfm?songID=6489047 .I still believe most country people will get a laugh out of it, and that's the audience it's aimed at. I do understand some people not getting it though. PS, It's a silly song, meant to be silly, Like "A horse walks into a bar", or "I just flew in from Detroit and boy are my arms tired." Everyone knows neither one of them happened, they just take it as silly.

Hi Mike, See my answer to Gavin above. It's OK, not everyone will get it.

Good theme John!. A bit of welcomed light relief from the doom and gloom. Nothing better than a good wake and the inevitable punch up. The makings of a happy funeral. Regards John

Hi John, Thanks a lot for the read and all the happy thoughts. I either want to go out with a bang, or a whisper, a big party, or just up in smoke and scaterred to the wind or waves. But for sure, no weepy, creepy, all in black funeral!

Hey John:
Can you tell how much "Old Man Boredom" has taken things over... and I'm working hard to be entertained. This one reminds me of George Strait for some reason... LOL! Can't wait to hear it draped over a melody.
Good luck, Pal... ----Dave

Good luck, Pal... ----Dave Howdy Dave, For some reason, I am stuck in my room for hours at a time. I don't have to stay here, but most of the folk living where I am are everyday and night beer drinkers, or natives who only want to speak in their own language, or both. It doesn't lead to many good conversations. So I write... As for going out, most of the local bars charge $5 for a soda, and a cheap meal is $10. I can make 2 weeks of dinners for that. Right now I am a spendthrift, or facing facts, usually cheap! I'm saving for a vehicle and rent when I get back to the Philippines. Glad you like it. It is just a tongue in cheek poke at mortality.

You remind me of Mike Zaneski in your wandering spirit. He was once a "busker" in New Orleans (probably other places), worked at a major label/record company... and Heaven knows where and what else he did before he began doing demos... and sharing ideas with us here. My wanderings were all begun with the idea that in a few days or possibly, a few weeks... I'd be heading home to love and all things familiar.
I'm hoping things in the Philippines have calmed down a bit. They are indeed, a proud and wonderful people. Near the end of WWII, my Uncle was sent on a mission there to rescue Aguinaldo right after MacArthur had re-taken most of the Islands there. I still have that photo of them somewhere. Aguinaldo in his starched white suit and enigmatic smile.
Take care in your travels... especially now in these Pandemic times.

----Dave Yes, I have a fickle foot, but at my age, I have been looking to settle down. I thought I had done that in Thailand, but my brother needed my help back in the states so I went home for over 3 years to help him out. Now I am a prisoner here, LOL, until they reopen the Philippines. Most Filipinos are nice people. Like anywhere there are bad ones, but it is easy to tell where to stay away from. I will be happy to have access to a studio again, and the nice young lady waiting for me there!

I like it. lots of good lines. i like the revenge theme for the brother in the bridge. actually i think fear of revenge could be a bigger factor in avoiding the exe's. Dont send me to my exes, i know what they'll do with me ii'll travel toilet to sewer line, to a burial at sea.
just an idea.
when i was much younger i had the pleasure of having a phiipino family as neighbors. they were very generous with food. cooking huge meals and offering me seconds, thirds, and fouths. very nice people.

Howdy Moose, Thanks for the read, and the kind words. And yes, that's what at least one of my exes might do. The other 3 still want me back. Filipinos generally are very nice people.
