I haven't graced these boards in awhile but now that summer is here I am hoping to get back into songwriting a little. The recent death of John Prine did however prompt me to blow a little of the dust from my guitar and pen a tribute song to him. John Prine was one of the first artists that inspired me to play and write and I have been an avid fan of his for over 30 years. I'm neither an accomplished player or vocalist but he always made it seem like that was alright and I loved him for it.

For My Hero John Prine

For My Hero John Prine

He was always on hand to give me a boost,
Through all the perils and pitfalls of my misguided youth
For no matter what happened I knew Id be fine
Once I got to my room and put on some John Prine.

With a keen eye for detail and a talent with words
He took in all the people and the things he observed,
Then he gathered that hay and he spun it to gold
With the songs that he sang and all the stories he told.

But now that angel has flown from Montgomery,
And all the stars have lost a bit of their shine,
And that flag in my heart is at half-mast tonight,
Out of love and respect for my hero John Prine.

Barbara Lewis and Grandpa, James Lewis, Sam Stone,
All portraits of people I feel like Ive known,
Yes he knew our lives well for hed lived it himself
And never tried to pretend that he was somebody else.

So now Im playing his music and Im singing his songs
Because it helps me to feel like hes not really gone,
And when I get too depressed I try and picture the man
Up in heaven with that 9-mile cigarette in his hand.

It's a terrific write--a fine tribute. Production wise, it comes across a bit low in volume--minor adjustment at best. Nicely sung, though I'd like to hear that vocal a bit more upfront. Really well done! Thanks for sharing.

All my best,

Hi Bobby,
Very, very fine job. I'm sure he will be proud to hear it in heaven. I agree with Deej about the volume.

Have a goodun,

I feel you brother. Devastating his passing. What an inspiration that guy was. He had more health problems than you could count and the dude kept writing great songs.
His latest album was great. Egg and Daughter Night is brilliant. Master class in song writing.
And your song is such a nice tribute. It touched me. Thank you for writing and posting it.

Cute song, really sounds like his style. You even got the accent.

Should be louder though, but aside from that it sounds great. Very pretty music.

I'm sorry that I haven't gotten back sooner. I have some health issues of my own. Thank you all for the kind comments. He was definitely a uniquely gifted songwriter and singer and I am still dealing with the pain of his loss.

Hi Bobby
The volume was a bit low for my poor hearing, or seemed so!
Great tribute to the late John Prine. He kept me sane many nights, so sad when he passed away.
Good song and performance.

Hey Bobby!

Great to see you around! I don't get around that much either anymore. I enjoyed your tribute as I have always enjoyed your song-writes!

Hi Booby ...

Other than a few days here and there, I've been absent from JPF for five or six years. I'm trying to be a little more active.

It's a really nice sound. It's a bit difficult to discern some of the lyric without reading along because of the low recording volume. But, could be my old ears ... 73 years old. YIKES! There's nothing more true than just a singer and his guitar. That's as personal and raw (in a good way) as it gets. Nice!

Best to you. Be safe ...

Fitting tribute for one who touched many....I would record it better Bobby if I was you...Not sure if many people can hear this Chorus, but they should
