Hey, folks:

Hope everyone is doing well. Here's something new . . . well, at least from a production standpoint. I wrote this song a few years back, and I think I posted the lyrics at some point on the Lyric 3 forum two plus years ago. I had a couple of failed attempts to leverage BIAB to do this back then, but decided to revisit it recently and this is where I ended up for better or worse. Hope you enjoy the listen and thanks as always for the kind feedback. My best to you all--

Deej

Here's the song:

SHE'S GOT A GOOD HEART

Here are the lyrics:

My buddies say my baby’s
got some marbles out of place.
My Momma says she doesn’t
have such a pretty face.
She’s got a laugh that makes
an otter sound like Princess Di;
an eye for fashion that
could make both Versaces cry.

But my baby’s got a good heart,
and that’s everything.
She’s got a good heart—
I don’t care what you say.
She’s got a good heart,
and that’s everything,
She’s got a good heart.

You never see her
when the lights go down;
when the whole world’s sleeping
and no one’s around.
That’s when she says
the really sweet stuff;
that’s when I know
I know complete love.
And the really, really best part is . . .

My baby’s got a good heart,
and that’s everything.
She’s got a good heart—
I don’t care what you think
She’s got a good heart,
and that’s everything,
She’s got a good heart.

My buddies all like their
ladies firm and slim.
And I know my baby’s body
has never even seen a gym.
She maybe drinks a little more
than a lady should.
And those funny cigarettes
don’t do her any good . . .

Buy my baby’s got a good heart,
and that’s everything.
She’s got a good heart—
I don’t care what you think
She’s got a good heart,
and that’s everything,
She’s got a good heart.

You never see her
when the lights go down;
when the whole world’s sleeping
and no one’s around.
That’s when she says
the really sweet stuff;
that’s when I know
I know complete love.
And the very, very best part is . . .

My baby’s got a good heart,
and that’s everything.
She’s got a good heart—
I don’t care what you think
She’s got a good heart,
and that’s everything,
She’s got a good heart.

Hi Deej:

I've been trying to find time to have a listen since early this morning... but grocery shopping in the town north of here got in the way. I have a feeling you are probably the only person here at JPF who has the "right stuff" to "pull off" a song like this. A believable "story-line" and your vocal coupled with the beat and vibe of the song will probably make you a teen idol, sell tons of songs and carve your name into the tree of temptation where most teens hang out.

Bouncy, well written and a super performance. Best of luck with it. Nice work! ----Dave

I really like the chorus, it has lots of energy.

I like that background vocal in the verses.

However, I just realized what it is that bothers me about the verses. At first I expected this song to be funny and sarcastic, but after a while I thought it might be serious. It should not have a serious message, imo. If it's sarcastic, that needs to be more obvious.

Wonderful. I like it for all the reasons that Polly doesn't like so much. The sincerity is sweet and real and just makes this feel so good smile Humor and sincerity go really well together. The humor opens the listener's mind and makes it more willing to accept sentimentality. Not everyone could pull it off, but you can.

I think you need to pronounce the word heart more clearly. I'm not sure that I would have been able to pick it out if I didn't know the title. It's kind of important smile

Great tune, production and vocals.

Dave,

Thanks so much for the listen and feedback. I'm a bit too old to be a teen idol, and I'm more than realistic about my chances of ever making a dime off my little hobby . . . but I appreciate the well wishes. Hope things are all good in Texas way! Stay well, my friend!

Polly,

Thanks for giving this one a spin. Yeah, what worries me about this tune is how it may be perceived by some--it's a fair concern, particularly these days. I wouldn't say the verses are sarcastic or meant to be so--though maybe exaggerations to some degree. It's a combination of what the singer is told and observes about his partner. She's nuts, she's not that pretty, she has a horrible laugh, she's not fit, she drinks and smokes too much. All of which may be true. But to the singer, it doesn't matter--she's his complete love. It's what inside that makes the difference.

At its heart this is a love song . . . a guy defending his girl. If that doesn't come across, then I've failed, and this song won't resonate with most.

Appreciate the thoughtful feedback.

Cheers!

Deej

Gavin,

You've pointed out one of my many weaknesses as a vocalist . . . I tend not to enunciate those last syllables, particularly the hard consonants. You are exactly right here--didn't even notice until you pointed it out--and if I re-did the vocal I would take care to nail that "t" a bit more. Actually, it's a speech thing as well, because I talk in a similar style. Not sure if that's sprung form my mix of New York and North Carolina accent. But nonetheless, something I need to be far more conscious of on future efforts. Thanks for pointing it out to me.

My best to you,

Deej

No I didn't mean it failed! It's a good song. And actually that situation probably does exist, maybe quite often. Just that I started out expecting it to be sarcastic, and then thought oh wait maybe it isn't.

Tune is very energetic. And fits your voice well. Repetitive Chorus of 4x works in this tune because of the vibe.

I love the concept of the dude who “sticks with his chick” no matter what friends and family say. And he sees more in her than the rest of the world gets. Though she comes off one way to everyone else, to the singer, Deep down the woman is Awwwwright...And he really doesn’t care what others think.

As for the teenage idol thing Dave, you may be getting flashbacks to Rick Springfields “Jessie’s Girl”... smile

It comes across very nicely Deej.
Love those falsettos.

Tom Petty would love this one.

I have always liked the timbre in your voice. Imo...this recording showcases it better than any song that I have heard from you. And the recording is very clean and melodic. I like the song a lot.

I think that it could be enhanced if you had some more backing vocals that emphasized breaks from the verses more. I think that the structure of the song is fine and it works now but would be even better if the backing vocals were fuller and more harmonic.

Other than that, when the "chorus" responds to the singer I think that it needs to be louder.

Big LIKE from Marty as it stands though.

Hi Deej,
Very well done. It sounds like today's country pop. Not sure if that was your intent but it would cross over well. Good luck with it.

Hi Dave
I love this it does have a retro feel to it, which is fine.
As I've said often Dave such an unusual voice, unique in many ways
Best of luck with whatever your plans are for it

Tom, Marty, John and Travis,

Thanks much gents for the kind words and the listen.

Martin, I went back and forth on the volume of the backup singers. But I think you may be right that it can still come up a bit. The biggest challenge for me production wise was differentiating that chorus from the verse given it's the same four chords (and made more challenging given it's sometimes hard in BIAB to sound the same chord differently, which the song needs). So your're right that a lots dependent on the harmonies, and I can probably do more still. Thanks for the input.

John, I rarely have intent when it comes to genre . . . jus try to make it sound like I hear it in my head. But glad this has cross-appeal potential!

My best to you all,

Deej
