New mix. My friend Gerry suggested a new mix for this song. Sounded like a good idea. So here it is.
<edit> I was told that the main writer for this song Ken had passed away. I have found out that was false information.

Prayer
By Ken Mastro and Tom Franz

sun on my shoulder
wind at my back
there was a time
when my live was like that

just long enough
to drop my defense
and make my fall
more immense

Lord I need something
to hold onto
before I blow away

if humility
is your goal
i passed that point
so long ago

all you have given
you have taken away
all i have left
are these words I pray

C
B
I can hear
the cold wind
howling at my door
that is why
i'm praying lord
it's coming back for more
C

Thanks for sharing that with us, Tom:

Knowing your belief in your co-writer's strengths make the song more meaningful... but even without it... in today's world of unseen enemies and anarchists... hell bent on destroying our culture, our history and our past, no matter how "out of touch" with modern beliefs... makes this prayer so needed at this time.

Somewhere in my archives, I have a co written song with the same title... but the subject (request to the Almighty) is a bit different... and from a child's perspective.

Thanks for sharing. May your prayer be answered. Beautiful work.

----Dave

Tom,

It's a pretty song . . . love those first four lines. There are few things I can quibble with, but the all come down to artistic choice and they're really not worth mentioning, and you've made some nice ones consistently throughout. The vocal is heartfelt and full of emotion--nicely done. If there's an opportunity for enhancement . . . for me at least . . . it the lyric of the bridge--those last two lines could convey more.

But the chord progression and melody make this compelling just as is. Really enjoyed it!

All my best,

Deej

Wow...This is really good this morning for me personally.

Reminds me of my friend Bryan MacLean from LOVE who wrote "Alone again, or". He told me to do a song of his & he passed Christmas of '99. I can't find the song, so I cannot do it...

Nice work and very touching as is

Beautiful guitar and singing. A theme so many of us can understand. Real nice song.

Those guitar trills are very pretty.

Dave,
Thank you for your listen and thoughts.

Deej,
Thanks for your kind words. How about that the last two lines of the bridge were my favorite of the part that I wrote. It was about the unrelenting difficulty some people experience in life. But I sooooo respect a listener's view point because THAT is reality. You can't explain a song you give it to a listener and it becomes whatever they perceive it to be.
Thanks for the constructive thoughts very much.

Steve,
Dude I hope you find that song!!!!! I know how that would be though I have so many notebooks and audio clips of ideas. I really hope you do come across it.
Thanks for the listen.

Polly,
You heard the previous version that was so busy guitar wise that it had too many distracting string squeaks. Maybe it is the way that I EQ the guitar. I like that high end sparkle. Perhaps I should rethink that. . . . .
Thanks for the listen and kind words.

Thomas,
We have a mutual admiration thing going.
Thanks for your listen.

Tom

I went online to his lost tapes & it's not there....Bryan Macleans guitar playing & writing were so genius.

Tom,

I went back and gave the bridge another listen. I think you can read/hear those lines in two ways--yours being the better. My initial, and I think wrong, read of "That is why I'm praying lord it's coming back for more" was, paraphrased, "I'm praying it comes back again" . . . which of course doesn't make a lot of sense, hence my comment, but that should have tipped me off to a plainer meaning: Again, paraphrased, "That's why I'm praying lord BECAUSE it's coming back for more"--which makes more sense and hopefully what you intended.

Not sure how to clarify it--probably doesn't need anything, actually--just a weird take on my part. Maybe you could change the line to " . . . it's come back for more" given it's already howling at the door. Dunno. Go with what feels right to you . . . As I said, pretty song sung with heart--really nice job on it.

Regards,

Deej

It has Cat Stevens written all over it. Little Neil Diamond too. Very emotional and great guitar track.

The singing style reminds me of Italian classic songs.

But this was terrific.

Hello Tom I enjoyed listening to this very much. The highlights are the vocal and guitar for that reason I would drop out everything else apart from the bass. To bring that wonderful acoustic guitar out in the mix I would twin it, pan one Left and the other Right. The right hand guitar track I would up the highs a little on the EQ and the nudge it a few milli seconds to the right, the Left hand guitar track I would drop the Highs on the EQ a little and leave the track in position. This would fill it out with that Acoustic Guitar and also enhance your vocals in the middle with that bass line just sitting in the background.

Only suggestions Tom but worth giving it a try and apart from that I wouldn't change a thing.

Best,

Gerry

Really strong lyrically and beautifully performed. Guitar sounds great and the vocal is very emotive, just the way I like it. Thanks for sharing.
