Hi JPF friends:

Wendy DuMond was kind enough to let me know about Joe's death. Sadly, it was back on March 7th, 2019 in Garibaldi, Oregon. He died of Cancer. Joe was one of the most generous and entertaining folks I've NEVER had the privilege to meet. What I would give if time and space were not factors in meeting people we enjoy... on a face to face basis.

I thought many of you, especially Brian, would like to know. RIP, Joe... you are missed.

All my best to all of you... enjoy every day on Planet Earth... we are here for such a short time.

----Dave

He was always an entertaining writer and performer and I never remember him having a bad word about anyone. I never saw him live, but I saw some videos and heard some songs.
He made great contributions to JPF in his time here.

Godspeed Joe.

So sorry to hear. There passes one of the brightest lights on this site. Joe was such a wonderfully twisted writer, a deeply funny man, and a caring and thoughtful human being. I adored his music and his madcap musings. We'll miss you, Joe. Have fun cracking up the spirits, because you know you will!

RIP Joe,

You were one of the most gifted, funny, and irreverent songwriters I have ever had the pleasure to meet.

Your wit, humour, and kindness to others will be sorely missed.

"I Bought Mom a Dead Dog For Christmas" is a family classic which we only played a week ago, and one which we play every year.

https://www.soundclick.com/music/songInfo.cfm?songID=1397686

May you be "Bungee Jumpin' With Jesus" , I'm sure he'd like that. smile

I'll miss you my friend.

cheers, ( and I'm having a coldie and a smile for you in your absence )

Geoff

Don't recall him really, but sounds as if his humor was similar to that of another dearly departed member of this board, TampaStan Good. He was probably the most active poster on this board.

Wow, really sorry to hear about this. Not sure why I didn't hear about it sooner. I had tried emailing him back in April and June and September just before I ended up in the hospital for most of the rest of the year. Really bums me out.

Joe was an original character. I was really looking forward to finally meeting him after 20+ years online together. He was going to come to the awards. But my own health and a string of deaths of my assistant and several JPF friends and nominees and my Mom's illness, long hospitalizations, surgeries, hospice and passing just kept pushing the intended late 2018/early 2019 planned awards later and later. They are finished now but we haven't restarted the show prep until I know I am stable enough to do it.

His novelty song "In Hell They're Probably Playing Disco" was nominated in the comedy/novelty genre. Hopefully he's elsewhere listening to the music he prefers!

Hi Brian:

Good to see you posting again. Joe Wrabek was unique, extremely talented and significantly generous. He made his Catalog of Songs available for anyone to participate with an offer to put those who "musicated them" on his CD. It was called "Cuppa Joe" and he sent several copies of the completed work to each selected participant.

I did a song called "Armadillo on the Interstate" and felt compelled to have our own Mike Zaneski and Wendy DuMond to do a version of one of his songs called, "A Man for Christmas." A way to pay him back for being so nice to so many of us. I'm hoping Mike will post it on the MP3 forum because I no longer have a music location from which to link it.

Turns out, our Joe was City Manager for Garibaldi, Oregon and had been Mayor of several other small cities in the Eastern part of the state. He leaves behind a wife and daughter if I remember correctly. They threw away the mold when they created Joe. I never met the man but enjoyed his sense of humor and his way of creating songs about creepy dead things... and even an irreverant creation called "Pole Dancing for Jesus."

We were lucky to have him among as long as he was here.

Regards to you and best wishes for a complete recovery.

----Dave

Yeah I had already planned to feature him on our YouTube channel.. now at least I won't be sending notes to his survivors ignorant to what happened. That was a life story well worth telling and now it can't be done from the horses mouth.

A note to all: Leave some video of yourself telling your own life story for your family and friends should you leave too soon. I plan to do the same and will make a video about it as well once I am competent.

If I had him telling his story (which he'd have made funny as hell I bet) I'd be able to tell it to a wider audience even now. There's amazing stuff from unknown people all around us. Time to feature some of them! That's part of my plan.

I'm just now learning of Joe's passing. It was a shock ... what a great guy. I met him in Nashville twice. Had a great time with him. He even wrote a song about my underwear .... long story! But you'd be hard-pressed to find a kinder, more generous gentleman than Joe Wrabek. RIP, my friend.

Hi Bob and Alan:

Wow, Bob... Pineyfest was an event I missed and wish I had a time machine to take me back there to meet so many of the JPF participants who attended. You are a lucky man... and I'll bet being "on-stage" with Wrabek was a "hoot!" I hope all is well with you.

Alan, sorry you missed my original notice about Joe. You are exactly right. He was generous to a fault and had an immense imagination. He could mash his ideas into a song worth hearing and keep you laughing until your sides hurt. I hope his widow has an interest in keeping his catalog "alive."

Thanks for commenting. Be well, be safe and keep writing/performing.

Regards, ----Dave

In the competence department, all you need is your smartphome camera. Turn it on selfie video and go. If you want to add a good microphone, a Rode VideoMic Me is reasonably cheap and highly recommended. I have one. But if it's your voice only no reason the smart phone mic shouldn't suffice.

Sharing is uploading for free on to Youtube via Wifi. ...probably your own dedicated YouTube channel....it's actually pretty easy.

Your smartphone takes the video and stores it in a pretty universal video file format.

Once you have an account set up with Youtube, you can sign in via your cell phone and then simply upload your videos pretty seamslessly. You can also stilll manage your Youtube account via your desktop if that is easier.

All Youtube cares about is this universal video file format your video is stored in. How it gets it depends on you put it in. Cell phone and Wifi work, but a physical connection from cell phone to computer are also good, because the content can be played with before passing it on to the Youtube account via your laptop or desktop.

It really is that easy technically.

But back to the thread and the news about Joe last March 2019.

A character he was. Wonderfully quirky lyrics and his sense of humour shone through in his posts here at JPF.

And Dave, he was going to take out Dallas and Forth Worth ....well the whole damn human rac actually in this one

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9EVRhCjvsYI

This one's lots of fun
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uz5FhbiejFY

And I guess he writes this one...what an awesome song
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x47CnKkVRDE

And a whole lot more just searching his name on Youtube

https://www.google.com/search?q=joe...430j1j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

Thank you Joe

Thanks for sharing Dave. Somehow, I too seemed to have missed this when it was originally posted, so I will pay my respects now.

So sorry to hear this news, Joe was one of the great songwriting characters on here, with his own unique style. He certainly had a thing about animals and if they were ever in his songs they generally didn't fair too well smile. Loved his humor and I'm sure he's making a few people laugh right now.

Rest in Peace Joe and thanks for all the laughs.

Hi John V and Nigel:

So glad you got the message. I never met him (face to face) but missed a golden opportunity when he flew all the way down here to Texas to enter a singing contest at a little town about 50 miles south of Glen Rose. We had a grand-child close at hand who came down with a sudden illness... so I had to miss Joe's show and a chance to introduce myself and my family to him. One of life's regrets.

He certainly left us with many humor-laden songs full of creepy, groaty or downright naughty themes, lines and verses. "Pole Dancing for Jesus" comes to mind. To pay him back for allowing me to record one of his songs, "Armadillo on the Interstate" which he put on an album for several participants... I paid Mike Zaneski and Wendy DuMond to do one of his little treasures called, "A Man for Christmas." I don't think Mike ever posted a link to it here. Maybe Wendy will see this and may have a link.

Thanks, Joe... for so much unusual humor and fun!

----Dave

Polly Hager did a version - here's the link I Want a Man For Christmas

Also here's a link to the whole JPF thread I Want a MAN for Christmas! Wrabek/Polly - MP3 Forum

Thanks, Nigel:

I have not heard Polly's name in these "hallowed halls" for many moons. She and Big Bob were regulars in collaborations and colorful conversations. Wrabek's legend lives on.

Regards, ----Dave

Thanks Nigel for the links.

I want a man for Christmas for Polly...great vocal by Polly. Good on Joe and everyone for this song

And I have to say I was delighted to see there are a number of Joe's performances on Youtube. He's left a musical legacy here and there.

And speaking of Mike Zaneski, there is someone you want in your studio.

Michael had some music he'd put up which inspired my lyric. This is where Michael took it

And yeah Dave, Pineyfest. I was at one and two and the precursur in Detroit with Tink, AmigaRia, Anthony Torres and others. One and two were awesome at Dickinson at some motor inn that had a lounge, and was big enough to host a good party of 50 or so JPFrs plus all the locals who came as well.

Great experience. Drove down both times from Toronto....to Detroit, turn left on I75. Go to south of Cincinnati. turn right to Louisville, the left to Nashville. For Dickinson you turn right at Nashville like you are going to Memphis, and drive about half hour 45 minutes.

Piney House was a bit further down the highway, then south a few country roads to the end of one in the middle of nowhere, but on the Piney River.

Bobby and Dawg could not host Pineyfest as envisioned due to insurance issues, so they found Dickinson for us for I & II. Great memories of the early days of JPF
