A steam rose from the jungle floor,
And hung thick in the air,
The sticky breeze would blow no more,
Against the summer's glare.

Then turning sharply in the air
From high up in the sky,
To swiftly dive with expert flair,
The Toucan bird did fly.

And coming to a clearing small,
Came Toucan to a halt,
Where shining Babbling Brook did call,
From Jungle Valley's vault.

And in it's midst a young boy sat,
His mouth curled in a frown,
And angry at the water that
Was barely trickling down.

"Is this the best that you can do
To cool me in this heat?
Your water's warm, and shallow too,
It barely wets my feet!"

The Toucan clucked as he did drink,
To make his presence known,
And give the boy time to re-think
The rudeness he had shown.

"My child, do you not know to whom
your insults do berate?
An infant from the mountain's womb
That raindrops did create!"

"Come listen to a tale my boy,
For what I say is true,
A parable of growth and joy,
About the brook and you."

“The brook was born from summer’s rain
Some centuries ago,
Much more than Mountain could retain,
And so she let it go.”

“The newborn brook did trickle down
The mountainside with glee,
And whispered in her babbling sound
A river I will be!”

“And skeptics, as they’re apt to do,
Would laugh at little brook,
Who vowed to make her dream come true
However long it took.”
“She flowed until she hit a stone
Immense, both tall and wide,
She could not budge it all alone
However hard she tried.”

“And how the boulder laughed and dared
Her move him from his place,
Until the brook became so scared
She shrank from boulder’s face.”

“The seasons passed but Babbling Brook
had never ceased to dream,
And once she had her fear forsook
She planned a mighty scheme.”

“The rainy season had returned
And soon she grew in might,
And courage in her bosom burned
As she resumed the fight!”

“She pushed against the giant rock
With all her new found strength,
Unseating it with one hard knock
Expanding her own length!”

“And now she’s known both far and wide
And called by a new name,
From Mountain to the Ocean’s tide,
A river of great fame!”

I liked this a lot. Its a good an inspiring story.

It reminds me of when I had a summer job on the Stanislaus river on a stretch which is now under the lake of new Melones dam. in California even in those pre droughts years, it would not rain in late spring or all of summer. May would be the month the snows melted and the for a couple of weeks the river would be insanely high, 10 or more times normal. it was in a runoff in May a few years before I worked there that "Death Rock" got its name.from a rafter that was pinned against it for 3 days. (or so the stories I heard said).

but the thing that amazed me was that even in September, months after the last rain and snowmelt, the river would still be flowing fairly well, maybe at half the normal volume. I would try to picture how many of all rain drops that fell would soak into the ground or cling to an underground rock, only to surrender to gravity months later and join the flow.

Staying 6 feet away is better than being 6 feet under.

Inaction is the only sure way to lose at anything in life. All positive action guarantees at least a fighting chance." -Brian Austin Whitney
