Hi Everyone.............Here's a tune that I wrote about ten years ago, in which Mr. Paul Battersby did a total make over on. Tell me what you think.....all thoughts and comments are appreciated, and first impressions are most welcome.
Thanks

"All By Myself"

I deal with the loneliness like combing fresh cut hair
I convince myself that Iím alright
I can deal with the solitude and the echo from upstairs
Now that the ghost is gone, Iím alright

Iíd rather be alone and by myself
Than to be alone, while being with someone else
All by myself...stowed way up high on some dusty shelf
All by myself...just me, an island, unto itself

Some nights I reminisce back and forth in this old chair
Is it worth the lament...is it really fair?
Black and blue is the emptiness with a woman who canít care
One thing that stands out, now, completely clear

Iíd rather be alone and by myself
Than to be alone, while being with someone else
All by myself...stowed way up high on some dusty shelf
All by myself...just me, an island, unto itself

Some nights I reminisce back and forth in this old chair
Is it worth the lament...is it really fair?
All I need is my poetry and the music that I play
To stretch these untamed wings and fly away

I like the mix of guitar and violin in the music. I like the lyrics, especially the line
I deal with the loneliness like combing fresh cut hair
fits the theme perfectly. Why does hair misbehave for days after a haircut anyway? it will be a problem for days but will eventually work out fine.

Thanks Moosesong.............I like that line, myself. It's hard to actually write unique, original lines.
Thanks for noticing......and thanks for commenting and thank you for listening.

Tom,

This is a wonderful song! It has that vibe where you just get lost in the song and forget the present. You mentioned you wrote it ten years ago, was is produced also that long ago or a recent production? I listened on headphones and had a couple of thoughts, (don't I always). I think you could reduce the reverb "slightly" on your lead vox which in my mind will allow the background strings to feel back more by themselves giving you better 3D within your mix. I like the distant vibe, however but I think the strings would be empowered by this move--maybe add a little more reverb on them and pan them slightly stronger to one side--experiment should you be inclined.

This is a great tune, and a great performance which is pretty standard with you.

Hey there steady-eddie.......thanks for stopping by.
It's an old production with the strings, percussion, and bass just days ago added. The original production cannot be revisited, as the tracks were all lost.
With that said, I'm glad you like it, and thanks again for listening and commenting. It's all most of us gets ;-)

Echoing Eddie, I thought it would sound better with less reverb on the vocal but if you don't have the original there's nothing you can do apart from redoing the vocal.
Worth a try as it's a good song.

If I had been mixing this from the raw tracks, it likely would not have occurred to me to mix as stereo wide and with as much reverb but that is one of the things that caught my attention right away and that I liked so much about this song. I like the performance and the lyrics as well, but the not so typical mix of the vocals and guitars also stands out as something that makes this song good.

I love this song. The production is also great, except I found the far right and left panning of the vocals a bit distracting. Through my headphones, it was less of a stereo effect than the sound of two distinct voices standing a long way apart from each other at different sides of the room, which didn't seem very natural. It was less noticeable when the strings came in because of the fuller sound. I loved that moment when the strings came in by the way.

If it was me (which it wouldn't be because I doubt if I could write such a great song), I'd experiment with bringing those voices closer together and maybe using the effect more strongly in the chorus than in the verses to apply extra lift. I probably shouldn't be giving production advice though smile

Lyrically, I think it's great. If you're still open to lyric suggestions at this stage in the process, I think "unclipped wings" might be better than "untamed wings."

Wow great sound and hook in chorus. It reminds of Pink Floyd, that doubling effect sounds like Ozzy...mama I'm coming home

Yeah the all by myself is a bit generic, but you have some good lines and thoughts in there.

I assume it's done so I'll just say very cqtchy, captures a mood and sounds great. Enjoyed

Well done, Tom... and Paul with that great support:

This really has a ton of potential and I wish you success in "pitching it" to those seeking tracks for their next album, etc. It can stand "on it's own" but most of us don't have the followers to bring a good song out of the "noise" created by too many songwriters and artists.

Enjoyed my listen. ----Dave

Thanks Dave........I'm not much into "pitching" anymore. I think I'd rather sell vacuum cleaners, door to door ;-)
I appreciate the generous comments......comments, like that, have always been the greatest reward.

A Beatles song??! Wow....that is something. They have always been, in my book, the greatest band.
Thanks for making my day, John.

This tune is really sweet. The story behind the demo is interesting.

As for the track itself, that sounds like exactly like me on the acoustic guitar. I simply don't remember cutting this track....

This tune is really sweet. The story behind the demo is interesting.

As for the track itself, that sounds like exactly like me on the acoustic guitar. I simply don't remember cutting this track....

Lovely tune Tom. Beautiful vocals and nice playing. Paul did a wonderful job, as well. Well done.

IronKnee,

Really like the songógreat write and nice vibe with it. Vocals are stellar. Youíve already gotten some good feedback on certain of the production elements. I find the reverb and wide panning on the vocals appealing, and its part of the magnetic feel this song has . . . though I lean a little in the camp that it might be a tad too much on each . . . maybe not, but worth seeing it how it sounds and comparing if doable.

But, boy, this is very cool just as is. Enjoyed it a ton!

Best regards,

Deej
